Johnny Knoxville will readily admit that, while he had a great time working on Hulu’s Reboot, his first experience as a series regular did not end the way he was expecting.

In an interview published Thursday, Knoxville spoke to Vulture about the comedy from series creator Steven Levitan that was canceled last month after its eight-episode first season premiered in September. Focusing on the cast of an early 2000s sitcom reuniting for a revival, the ensemble show also starred Keegan-Michael Key, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, Krista Marie Yu, Judy Greer and Paul Reiser.

The satirical showbiz sitcom “Reboot” will not return for a second season, the show’s creator Steve Levitan said on Twitter Monday night. It’s apparent confirmation that the search for a new home following the show’s cancellation on Hulu has failed.

Hulu declined to renew the show late last month, and at the time Levitan was hopeful of finding a new home for his show on another network or streamer. In his statement Monday, posted on his Twitter account, Levitan also took a subtle dig against Hulu and how the streamer treated the show.

Following the recent cancellation of the series by Hulu, Levitan and producing studio 20th Television tried to find another home. There are finished scripts, produced by a writers room that had worked on a potential second season, which were sent to potential buyers. Those efforts have now been exhausted, and Reboot if officially over. Levitan alluded to that in a Twitter post Monday.

“Well, that seems to be a wrap on Reboot,” he wrote. “Very proud of our amazing cast and crew and what we did together.”

He proceeded to take a subtle jab at Hulu’s treatment of the series by saying, “Haven’t seen it? Check us out on Hulu if you can find it,” and ended his message with “#UnintentionalLimitedSeries.”

News of Reboot‘s cancellation at Hulu was met with obvious frustration from co-star Johnny Knoxville, who called the axing “pretty unbelievable” in a social media post on Monday.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I say that despite getting great reviews and being nominated for a critics choice award @hulu has failed to pick up Reboot even for a second season. Pretty unbelievable,” Knoxville wrote in an Instagram caption. “Working on this show has been one of the great highlights of my life, and I wanted to thank @stevelevitan and the entire stellar cast for allowing me to be part of this show.

IndieWire has now reported that Hulu has canceled its latest original comedy, Reboot, after one season.

Reboot came from Modern Family creator, Steve Levitan. It was a satire of a once beloved sitcom, called Step Right Up, looking to reboot its show with the original cast returning. The show featured the talents of Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, Paul Reiser, Johnny Knoxville, and Rachel Bloom. Sources are telling IndieWire that Levitan is currently shopping the show to other outlets in an attempt to give it a new home so that it may continue.

The first and only season of the series consisted of eight episodes and debuted on the streamer on Sept. 20, 2022.

The lot of the show began with Hulu deciding to reboot a popular 2000s sitcom called “Step Right Up,” forcing the cast to reunite and confront their unresolved issues.

The series starred Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Judy Greer, and Calum Worthy as the show’s original cast members, Rachel Bloom as the millennial writer looking to reboot the show, Paul Reiser as the show’s original creator, and Krista Marie Yu as a former tech exec now working at Hulu tasked with overseeing the reboot.

“Reboot” was created by Steve Levitan, with the show marking his first project since the ending of “Modern Family” in 2020 after eleven seasons.

Levitan also served as executive producer and showrunner on “Reboot.

Hulu has opted not to renew the showbiz sitcom “Reboot” for a second season, the streamer said Monday.

The studio hosted the premiere of Hulu’s new sitcom Reboot from creator Steven Levitan and one could say that the affection started at the top and trickled down.

“I’d say it’s a love letter, and maybe also a friendly roast,” offered Levitan on the red carpet prior to the screening, describing the tenor of his new show that follows the adventures of a dysfunctional cast from an early 2000s hit sitcom called Step Right Up after a show runner pitches a reboot of their show to Hulu.

What it’s definitely not is a mean-spirited takedown of Hollywood, hence all the good vibes in and around the Daryl F. Zanuck Theater and all the glowing executives. “I’ve had a wonderful career,” continued Levitan, who has armfuls of Emmys...

It stands to reason that “Reboot” is immediately an entertainment biz turducken of industry lingo and in-jokes. From “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan, the new Hulu series depicts the reboot — also airing on Hulu — of a family sitcom and all the behind-the-scenes drama that inevitably follows. Levitan, whose credits include “Just Shoot Me” and “Wings,” obviously knows his way around a multi-cam, and his pilot co-writer John Enbom made a meal in “Party Down” of exploiting the seediest corners of Hollywood ambition. The combination of the two sensibilities makes for a (mostly) realistic peek into life on a studio lot, but that’s probably a given. That it ends up (mostly) toothless comes as a genuine surprise.

As if “Gordy’s Home” wasn’t a big enough reason to say “Nope” to a sitcom reboot, Hulu takes the meta-concept in a whole new direction.

The latest series from iconic Emmy-winning sitcom creator Steven Levitan, the co-creator behind “Modern Family,” is Hulu’s “Reboot.” It stars Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, and Johnny Knoxville as part of a dysfunctional cast made famous by the fictional early 2000s family sitcom “Step Right Up.” Now, almost 20 years later, the cast is coming back together again to revive the original hit series, plus squash their unresolved issues and navigate social media cancel culture.

Paul Reiser, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, Fred Melamed, and Krista Marie Yu also star in the series, streaming September 20 with its first three episodes followed by weekly installments. And yes, the show-within-the-show “Step Right Up” is being rebooted for Hulu, in case there needed to be another meta layer in the mix.

While everyone likes a good sitcom, there’s a whole different story behind the scenes, and Hulu‘s shining a light on such scenarios with its latest comedy Reboot. In the trailer for Steven Levitan’s “Reboot,” which Hulu released Tuesday, Judy Greer and Keegan-Michael Key’s characters have an extremely awkward off-set reunion in Hulu’s comedy about a revived sitcom.

The duo, who were an item 20 years ago on the series-within-a-series “Step Right Up,” aren’t the only ones from the “Full House”-style sitcom having issues. Former child star Zack (Calum Worthy) still brings his mother to set and the show’s new writers gasp when out-of-touch series creator (Paul Reiser) asks, “Is this one of those intern diversity training things?” upon seeing two women of color in the room.

Greer plays Bree, who was reduced to playing an alien character in a cable sci-fi show; Key is Reed, whose “vulnerable” approach to playing a gangster didn’t help his film career; and Johnny Knoxville is Clay, who is coming off arrests for being drunk and disorderly.

There’s nothing unusual about Hollywood recycling old sitcoms – and even dramas – for new audiences. But Hulu’s new Reboot comedy series takes it a step further, creating a series about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans surrounding the reunion of a fictional sitcom cast for a reboot.

Steve Levitan created the series and serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. “After working thirty years in TV comedy, this is both my love letter to sitcoms and, if I’m being honest, much-needed therapy,” said Levitan, describing his new comedy.

Hulu has unveiled the trailer for Reboot, a new comedy from Steve Levitan (Modern Family) that follows TV executives as they reboot an old comedy from the aughts called Step Right Up.

The single-camera laugher stars Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Judy Greer, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy and Krista Marie Yu. The cast of the original sitcom is forced to come back together and “deal with their unresolved issues in today’s fast-changing world,” according to Hulu.

The comedy premieres Sept. 20.

In the trailer, Paul Reiser plays Gordon, the creator of the old sitcom who is now having to face new Hollywood norms like inclusivity in the writer’s room. When he sees the diverse staff for the reboot, he asks, “this one of those diversity intern training things?”

At TCA earlier this month, Reiser told reporters that “it’s really fun representing the old school. My character is walking into this cold.

Paul Reiser has joined the cast of the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Reboot” from Steven Levitan.

Reiser is taking over the role of Gordon in the series from Michael McKean. He joins previously announced cast members Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, and Krista Marie Yu. This is now the second recasting on the series, with Greer taking over the role played by Leslie Bibb in the pilot.
