The new season of “Halloween Baking Championship” is like no other cooking competition ever – because it comes with a warning label about blood, guts and gore. Yes, Season 8 is all of the above, but, of course, in a surprisingly tasty, chipper way.
“Warning: The following program contains blood, bones, and brains depicted in a way that is delicious. All the baked goods involved in the making of this show are frighteningly high in calories,” the alert plastered across a black screen at the show’s opening reads.
The popular Food Network series (which is also streaming on discovery+) sees the return of host John Hanson as the caretaker of a haunted hotel, where 12 bakers must impress the judges, chefs extraordinaire Stephanie Boswell, Carla Hall and Zac Young. If they fail, the bakers are forced to “check out” and take the elevator to the mysterious 13th floor from which guests never return.

It’s been a little over a year since San Francisco resident Yigit Pura won the first season of Bravo reality competition series, Top Chef: Just Desserts and was also voted fan favorite by the viewers. Since that television exposure Pura has been wearing many hats. While holding down his day job as Executive Pastry Chef with Taste Catering & Event Planning, he also signed on as a Bravo website blogger when the second season of Just Desserts aired in late summer. Plus, he appeared regularly at Lgbt-related benefits and fundraisers, and he's starred in a series of Cooking Channel videos with fellow gay pastry chef Zac Young.
Now, thankfully for us, he is shedding his shirt and being doused in rainbow sprinkles for a 2012 calendar benefiting Meals On Wheels.

The Bataan Death March … With Chocolate
Another Television Critics Association Summer Tour is over and this was probably the most memorable one I’ve ever done, for a whole host of reasons.
Another critic once described the press tour (which usually lasts for two solid weeks with no breaks at all) as the Bataan Death March With Cocktails. Since I’m not much of a drinker that isn’t true for me. Instead, for me it’s a death march with chocolate since the cable and broadcast networks were constantly tempting us with all kinds of chocolates, from marshmallows covered with dark chocolate to chocolate covered strawberries to all kinds of fancy fou-fou chocolate desserts.
ABC even sent a box of amazing chocolate chip cookies to my room where they begged me to eat them! Talk about evil.
As I said, this TCA was very memorable. The day I arrived in Los Angeles,...

From the very first episode of Bravo's Top Chef: Just Desserts, 29-year-old Yigit Pura was a man to watch. Some watched for his dazzling talents in the kitchen which included combining elaborate flavors in unique combinations that wowed the judges along with chocolate working and spun sugar skills that were the envy of his competitors.

But even though Pura was an early favorite to take the title, his win in the finale — the first time an out gay man has won a Top Chef competition — was hardly a sure thing. From the very first episode of Bravo's Top Chef: Just Desserts, 27-year-old pastry chef Zac Young not only stood out as one of the cheftestant's to beat, but as the one with the most personality. By far. To say Young isn't afraid to be his fabulous self is like saying Glee isn't afraid to be wildly over the top when it comes to doing musical numbers.
Over the course of nine episodes of Just Desserts, Young not only showed he was the real deal when it comes to pastry, but just how much glitter could go into one dessert as well as how much fun one could have on a reality show, especially when part of Team Diva.
Unfortunately, his time on Tc: Jd also showed how spectacularly wrong a dessert could go (see his "cake-tastrophe" from the last episode) as could a relationship with fellow pastry chefs (see any...

On the new 'Top Chef: Just Desserts' (Wed., 10Pm Et on Bravo), the contestants had a passion for fashion. In honor of La Fashion Week, the chefs had to create 'edible dresses,' which would be shown at a party for industry insiders. And if that wasn't glamorous enough, there was a sudden twist -- in the form of an unexpected prize for the winner.
[Warning: Spoiler alert.]
The challenge was to make dresses of all-edible materials, to go with pairs of designer shoes. Everyone was excited to be part of the high fashion world -- but one chef was excessively into it. Zac Young clapped and squealed with delight when he saw all the shoes.

Forget the judges - on Wednesday night, two pastry chefs ejected themselves from the competition on Top Chef: Just Desserts. So far, the show has proven one thing: Pastry chefs are hypersensitive, emotional and needy. Only four episodes have aired, but who can remember any previous Top Chef season with so many tears and self-doubts on display? For weeks now, Seth Caro has shown himself to be a volatile presence in the kitchen. He's broken down in tears over a grapefruit shortage, fallen to pieces when a sorbet hasn't frozen and, frankly, hasn't seemed like the healthiest competitor. On Wednesday,...

Goodness, who knew pastry chefs were such drama queens?
Honestly, I was so Top Cheffed out from the past several lackluster seasons, I had no interest in even watching a Just Desserts spin-off, much less recapping it. But then there was all the drama – the hissy-fits! the sobbing! the bitchiness! – and just like that, I was sucked in.
Plus the gays! Sooooo many gays, the likes of which typically grace Project Runway. Or The Bachelorette. But so rarely on Top Chef.
Let’s meet the gays – we’ll call them Team Creampuff -- with a quick recap of the first impressions they made last week ...

Understatement alert: This wasn't Seth Caro's week on Top Chef: Just Desserts. On Wednesday's episode, the New York-based pastry chef suffered quite the emotional breakdown. There were tears, plus paranoia, crumbled desserts and self-pity - and the derision of his costars. The drama started immediately when the chefs were asked to make a dish celebrating penny candy for their Quickfire challenge. For Seth, the challenge was apparently an emotional one. In fact, he ended up doubled over in tears under his kitchen workspace. Related: Top Chef Fan Favorites Returning for All-Stars CompetitionThe chef explained that...
