Princess CydStephen Cone has been making movies at a steady clip for over a decade and yet remains largely unknown. It is a momentous and wholly deserved occasion then for him to receive a retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. Despite mixed receptions and even more erratic distribution patterns, his collection of films isn’t as motley as one might think. While each might tiptoe in a different direction, they maintain a hand in the Stephen Cone universe, imprinted by the same particular humanistic insight. In one of his earliest films, In Memoriam (2011), a young man so subsumed with the sudden death of a couple, fallen from a roof during the throes of pleasure, conducts his own investigation into their ill-fated demise. Innocuous curiosity masks what is essentially an existential inquiry and takes a self-referential pivot when he decides to recreate and film the events,...

2017-10-25T07:28:57-07:00Did Chris Pratt Cheat on Anna Faris with Jennifer Lawrence?
It was inevitable that, once Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence starred together in Passengers, there would be rumors about an illicit romance between them. It didn't help that, soon after the movie was released, Pratt and his wife, Anna Faris, split up. Everyone involved insists the rumors are false, but Faris admits that the constant drone of the untrue stories took a toll on her self-confidence.
Via Page Six.
As rumors continued to mount about an alleged affair between Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Faris recalled feeling self-conscious amid speculation about her eight-year union with the “Passengers” leading man.
“Even before they met in person, my publicist, out of the blue, pulled me aside and said, ‘Anna, listen, there are going to be paparazzi all over them,” Faris penned in her newly released memoir,...

With all due respect to Andrew (John Mulaney), Nick (Nick Kroll), and Jessi (Jessi Klein) the Hormone Monsters are the main characters of “Big Mouth.” Think about it: This is their story. The new Netflix comedy explores how Maurice (Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph) manipulate the minds and torture the bodies of pubescent junior high children. It’s a horror show — a funny horror show, but a horror show nonetheless — and they’re the big scary monsters freaking everybody out. Sure, they’re figments of Andrew and Jessi’s imaginations, but what’s a story of puberty without monstrous hormones? (You know, other than this.)
Maurice gets things going from the very first scene. As Andrew tries to learn about the female reproductive system in health class, suddenly out pops a horned, yellow thing with brown hair, a sagging chest, and a dick for a nose. “Did someone say ‘vagina...

Is the world ready for a zombie Christmas musical!? We'll find out! The first trailer has just been released for a new horror comedy called Anna and the Apocalypse.
Do you remember the guy who made all those "Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal" videos? His name was Ryan McHenry and the film is based on his BAFTA-nominated short film, Zombie Musical. He tragically passed away of cancer before the movie could enter production, but it did end up getting made, and it looks like it will be a wild and fun flick. Here's the synopsis:
Teenage Anna’s life is typical enough. Chafing against the narrow horizons of her small town, she dreams of bigger things. It’s not so much that she doesn’t love her friends and family — she does — it’s just that they’re all so… familiar. So typical. So predictable. Her childhood best friend...

In the first scene of Good Time, the latest from directors Josh and Benny Safdie, Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) barges into an office where a social worker is interviewing his brother Nick (Benny Safdie), who has a mental disability and impaired hearing. From there, the two brothers are off to the races, as Benjamin Mercer writes at Reverse Shot:Almost immediately after, Connie is hauling Nick along with him on an ill-conceived robbery of a bank branch in Flushing, Queens. “Do you think I could have done that without you standing next to me, being strong?” Connie reassures Nick right after the job—and just before a paint bomb goes off in their bag of stolen cash, filling the cab they’re in with red vapor and sending it off the road. The accident, an eye-poppingly entropic moment staged by the Safdies and captured as if on the fly by cinematographer Sean Price Williams,...

Actor & director Vincent Perez is every bit as European as his name would suggest. Born in Switzerland to a German mother and a Spanish father, Perez first cut his teeth playing classical roles in some of the most popular French movies of the 1990s, and went on to star in Cyrano de Bergerac (Jean-Paul Rappeneau, 1990), La Reine Margot (Patrice Chéreau, 1994) and Indochine (Régis Wargnier, 1992) to name but a few.
Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of meeting Vincent for an interview and asked him about his new movie Alone In Berlin, which he co-wrote as well as directed. Adapted from Hans Fallada’s popular 1947 novel by the same name, the film tells the story of a law abiding German couple and their quiet resistance during Nazi rule in Berlin. Staring Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson, Alone In Berlin has so far been met with mixed reviews,...

Given he’s one of our very favourite directors working today, it’s of great relief that Francois Ozon is such a prolific filmmaker, moving on from one project to the next in rapid fashion. This also means he releases a lot of films, which in turn, means we get to interview him a lot. Our latest meeting with the creative auteur was in Paris, to mark the release of Frantz…
So why the black and white aesthetic?
Actually the film was supposed to be shot in colour, but I decided one month before the shoot to change everything because after the location scouting, we found some very good places, especially in Germany, but it was full of colour, and I realised walking in the city, I saw some pictures of the place in black and white from the beginning of the century, and realised nothing had changed,...

As someone who loved Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson‘s Spring to the point of seeking out everything else they had done before that point, hearing about a new work debuting at Tribeca got me excited to see what they would deliver. My assumption was that it was the Aleister Crowley picture they spoke about when I interviewed them last year — I was wrong. While that discovery wasn’t surprising considering how long projects gestate, it was shocking to discover The Endless proved to be a sequel to their first feature collaboration Resolution.
They have created a film around the characters they played themselves: Aaron and Justin, UFO cult members. Would this new tale ten years later be only tangentially related through these characters or would the mythos be the same? If the latter, would it bring back the “monster,” locale, and supporting cast? These are important questions to ask,...

At the Tribeca Film Festival, press photographers lined the Flames red carpet expecting the likes of James Franco and Greta Gerwig. Instead, they were greeted by filmmakers Zefrey Throwell and Josephine Decker as well as Flames cast members wearing printed-out masks of said celebrities. In a way, this stunt acts as a great introduction to the tone of the film, a documentary that explores and expounds on Throwell and Decker’s relationship over the course of five years in very intimate detail (from funnily-posed sex to a post-dating therapy session to the editing room of this film). I got to sit down with Throwell, Decker, and their long-time Dp Ashley Connor to discuss the intimacy of the film, how nudity isn’t necessarily the most revealing thing, and the line of exploitation both on film and in a relationship.
The Film Stage: This is an understatement, but Flames is a deeply intimate film.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the director of the upcoming Captain Marvel film was, in fact, two directors. The duo who’ll be taking the helm are none other than Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It was an unexpected choice, to say the least. If someone out there told you that these two were somehow on their radar, they’d be lying.
That being said, this choice falls right in line with some of Marvel Studios’ unconventional thinking in the past. They don’t worry about the “heat” of the director as much as their ability to tell a good story on any budget. But what was it about these two in particular that drew the studio to them?
Speaking with Fandango, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige delved into his reasons for choosing Boden and Fleck for Captain Marvel.

A mawkish coming-of-age story that marries Sundance vibes with a soft punk spirit, Peter Livolsi’s “The House of Tomorrow” never manages to flesh out its skeleton of quirks, but its heart is definitely in the right place.
Very faithfully adapted from Peter Bognanni’s 2010 novel of the same name, Livolsi’s directorial debut is — after “Brigsby Bear” and “The Space Between Us” — at least the third new film this year that falls into the beguiling sub-genre of movies about young men who’ve been raised in isolation from the rest of the world. The stranger life gets, the more we might be compelled towards portraits of people who can stand outside of civilization and offer a new perspective on the mess we’ve made (in which case, we ought to brace for this sub-genre to get a lot bigger between now and 2020).

Major Nathaniel Lillywhite is the ultimate scene-stealer.
Robert Buckley has had his fair share of funny moments but on iZombie Season 3 Episode 2 he really got to show off just how positively hilarious he can be.
If you weren't in stitches watching Major on teenage brain then, like, you're, like, totally lying. Don't argue with me on this. Don't even.
The second installment was back to business as usual with the case of the week and loads of humor. Fortunately, we got a look into Clive's connection with Wally as well.
What surprised me was that it had been nearly two years since Clive last saw Wally. They sort of threw this new character at us, then killed him off, and we were supposed to go along with Clive being devastated, despite not being privy to this character before.
It turns out his relationship with Wally (and Wally's mother) begin pre-series.

Babette Mangolte. © Fleur van Muiswinkel If the name Babette Mangolte doesn’t ring with the same familiarity as such storied French cinematographers as Raoul Coutard and William Lubtchansky, it’s not for lack of innovation or accomplishment. Born in Montmorot in 1941, Mangolte moved to New York in 1970 following a number of years as an assistant cinematographer and apprentice to director Marcel Hanoun. There she quickly integrated herself into the city’s burgeoning experimental cinema scene, befriending luminaries such as Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage, and soon after met a 20-year-old Chantal Akerman whom she proceeded to collaborate with on a series of groundbreaking works throughout the mid-70s. Influenced as much by structuralism as the films of the French New Wave, Mangolte and Akerman deftly utilized time and space as cinematic conduits to visually articulate themes of dislocation, alienation, and female autonomy. Their most celebrated work, the landmark feminist dispositif Jeanne Dielman,...

This week HeyUGuys caught up with talented screenwriter Paul Laverty, the man who gave life to so many memorable characters and stories. In an extremely fascinating interview Paul talks about the latest film he wrote, The Olive Tree, directed by Icíar Bollaín. One of things I have always appreciated about your writing is that it often has undertones of very socially relevant themes, such as the environment, poverty and recession – as indeed we see in The Olive Tree – but your characters never feel like just mouth pieces for these issues but rather fully fleshed out, real people that, through the audiences observation, become a window into these problems. Finally, the mole hunt is over.
It may have only taken the better part of two seasons, but a lot of loose ends got largely tied up on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 15.
I say "largely tied up" because there's still nothing definite about Sabatino. He claimed he was just playing along to get info on the rogue agents.
But he's such a slimy bastard that who knows?
Unfortunately, he was the only one left alive after Hetty's warehouse bombing on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 15.
So the team was working from one know-nothing CIA officer and one cell phone belonging to Sharov, a dead CIA officer.
You wouldn't think that would be enough to qualify as clues, but the Wonder Twins, Eric and Nell, tracked one call to the church where Kensi was originally being held.
I thought finding Joelle there instead was a real twist.
I'd never found...

It was an eventful week in Salem as Steve and Kayla exchanged vows, Julie received devastating news, and Nicole and Chloe faced off at a custody hearing.
MyHourglass: A Days Of Our Lives Fan Forum members andredimera and fluffysmom join TV Fanatic Jack Ori to debate how good the wedding was, who they think will get custody and more...
1. Rate Steve and Kayla's wedding from 1 (most boring wedding ever) to 10 (most romantic wedding Days has had yet).
Andredimera: About a 5. It was a good wedding, but there wasn't enough focus on the actual wedding couple!
Fluffysmom: I'm giving the wedding an 8. I thought it was heartfelt and romantic. It was really nice having Stephanie, Carrie, and Austin come to Salem for the wedding. I'm glad that Steve and Kayla had their family and good friends sharing their special day.
Jack: As Andredimera said, there wasn't enough focus on Steve and Kayla.

Do you have a recurring nightmare? Mine is the oh-so passé “being chased”. It’s always the same; hunted relentlessly by an unknown assailant, helplessly fleeing from a certain doom. Of course, I wake up in a puddle of sweat, crying out for mommy, as one will do. The fear of cutthroat pursuit is at the center of Nightmare City (1980), Umberto Lenzi’s take on the then resurgent zombie sub-genre. And while you won’t wake up screaming after seeing it, you might end up covered in a sticky sweet glaze of Wtf. The Italians don’t make their horror in half measures; I’m pretty sure Nightmare City throws in the whole cup.
I should say, Italian/Spanish/Mexican. This co-co-production was released in Italy in December, toured around Europe for a couple of years, and then landed on North American soil late ’83 under the title City of the Walking Dead,...

Okay, it's time for me to stop trying to listen to more 2016 albums and just wrap up this list. In the past I would split my jazz list into a new releases part dedicated to current recordings and a historical part combining first releases of archival material with reissues. This year I'm skipping reissues, partly because some projects were so gargantuan that little guys like me weren't serviced with them, partly because the vinyl renaissance means everything is being reissued at once, and partly because so much stuff is just rehashing the same material in new packaging, with or without a gimmick or a little additional material added. So first releases of archival material are lumped in here. Maybe that's not entirely fair to the current guys, but on the other hand I don't include many archival items on my list.

Chicago Fire has been a roller coaster for the last few weeks, up and down and stomping on our heartstrings. Chicago Fire Season 5 Episode 11 starts out as a way for both the characters and audience to decompress from that - and then promptly goes nuts again because it can.
The major thrust of the episode is Casey and Dawson trying to resume their lives after losing Louie to his biological father Andre. Both of them take it badly but they express their grief in two totally different ways.
Casey gets the anger side of the equation, snapping at everyone else around him and turning into the world's biggest neat freak when Herrmann thinks there's a rat in Firehouse 51. Seriously, Niecy Nash would be proud of how much cleaning he makes everyone else do. After she gave him a talking-to about his attitude.
Hey, Lieutenant, is there something you want to get off your chest?...

Chloe decided to keep Holly from Nicole, Deimos pushed to elope, and Chad’s plan to share the Orwell chip blew up in his face on Days of Our Lives.
Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Fossie from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate Chloe’s decision about the baby, Eric’s return, and more from the week in Salem.
Did Chloe make the right decision about keeping Holly away from Nicole and Deimos?
Jack: No, because Holly is not her baby, so it is not her decision to make. She's 100% right about Deimos and Nicole's blindness when it comes to him but she is leaving out the fact that Holly is not actually her child and that it's up to Nicole what measures to take to protect her.
Christine: I agree with Jack. It’s not Chloe’s decision to make.

Prague brought surprises as Anna, Carrie, and Austin all showed up during the hunt for Stefano, while back in Salem, Chloe woke up just as Deimos and Nicole got engaged.
Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Emmy from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum as they debate whether Anna, Carrie and Austin should stick around, if Jj’s cut out to be a detective, and what Chloe should do next on Days of Our Lives.
Do you want Anna, Carrie, and Austin to stick around for awhile?
Jack: Yes and no. I was excited that they were returning but their appearance was ridiculous and pointless. I don't want this urn-toting, completely out of her mind version of Anna with Carrie and Austin babysitting her. At all.
Emmy: Anna, Carrie and Austin are three different characters, so I will answer separately. I definitely would...

Chloe woke up! Nicole and Deimos got engaged and Hope unwittingly escaped from prison this week in Salem.
TV Fanatic Jack Ori needed the week off so I’m jumping in for this week’s Days of Our Lives review…
It was Kiriakis vs. Dimera once again but instead of Victor and Stefano, the faces have changed, and I find the new players a positive devlopment.
I’d rather see Victor with Maggie and his family than doing battle over microchips, and as much as the show is pushing this sham storyline of Stefano still be alive in Europe, we know he’s not coming back…unless they do something really stupid like try to recast Joseph Mascola, which would be the equivalent of soap sacrilege.
But André and Deimos make a solid and entertaining adversarial duo and it could be fun to watch Chad and Sonny try to keep them in check.

Kensi's feeling left behind, and it's a weight on the whole team.
New relationships are forming, or solidifying on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 12. Except for Kensi, who's inadvertently ruining hers with Deeks.
Before I cover all the personal drama, let's take a quick look at the case of the week, such as it was.
Sam got to dress up and go undercover at the same private-security firm where this week's victim worked. There was a hint of dirt, but no, a couple of the guys at the firm were helping out a misguided young man and one of them got killed for his troubles.
(Shoutout to Eddie George, the former All-Pro running back, who played one of Sam's security-firm co-workers and who may be the next ex-nfl player to make the transition to acting.)
Sam's contribution was to make an inspirational speech to keep the firm's boss from ruining his and his company's reputation.

Animals live among us, often with us, some despite our interference in their habitats. They’re independent organisms that are often subject to our rules. This is especially true when it comes to television.
How we use and portray animals on TV perhaps reveals more about ourselves than the qualities they contain. Are they brought in to round out a nuclear TV family, or do they have greater narrative significance? Do they have personalities or are they plot devices that advance the story, and then forgotten? Do characters regard them with any real feeling?

IndieWire examined how the animal kingdom fared on our screens this year from a storytelling point of view, and determined which portrayals were the most significant. Because of this narrative aspect, we focused on two types: fictional animals whose characters were created for the purpose of the show, and non-speaking animals.

Josh's new girlfriend is super-cool.
It could be my longtime love of Brittany Snow that brings me to that conclusion, but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 7 does a really phenomenal job of making Anna a lovable character, and in turn, making us hope she stays in Josh's life for a while.
Elsewhere in the hour, Paula's marriage is in turmoil, but it's nothing compared to the distance between her and Rebecca.
And Valencia is letting some of her own crazy ex-girlfriend traits come out.
Let's get into it Bunch-heads!
Josh: Before I met you, I didn't even know eyebrows were, like, a big deal.
Anna: That's what I love about you.

Anna: Love About you.

Less than ten years ago, Christopher Mintz-Plasse got his start as an actor when he was cast as the nerdy “McLovin’” in the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Superbad, and playing the nerd is a role the actor has embraced for much of his career since.
But he’s also managed to start a fairly prolific career as a voice actor after being cast as the voice of the Viking “Fish Legs” in DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon. While Mintz-Plasse has continued to voice that role through a sequel and a number of “Dragons” TV series, he’s taking on a new role for DreamWorks Animations’ latest animated film, Trolls.
As some might suspect, the movie is based on the “Good Luck Troll” dolls that have permeated little girls’ doll collections for decades. Mintz-Plasse voices the role of King Gristle, king of the Bergens, a race of miserable...

Finally, Kensi rejoins the team (kinda) on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 5.
It's been three episodes (four weeks thanks to the debates) that viewers have seen Kensi laying in bed with a coma. Which is getting to everyone, especially Deeks, who is fearing the worst.
Deeks: I want to be that guy, but what if I can't do it?
Hetty: That won't happen, because you're going to give her everything she needs to get better.

Finally, she awakes up, but can only move one side of her body. Anyone want to guess how Kensi will spend the rest of Daniella Ruah's maternity leave? I'm guessing lots of physical therapy, and a lot of heart-to-hearts with Deeks and her mom Julia.
I feel pretty safe that Kensi won't be having philosophical chats with Deeks' mother Roberta,...

The advertising campaign for ABC’s newest family sitcom, American Housewife, states that the Otto family at its center is “anything but cookie cutter.” That edge doesn’t track much in the show’s pilot, which is appropriately amusing in a forward-thinking, inoffensive way, but not actually packing much in the way of clever jabs at fat-shaming American culture like its original title did in six words: The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport. Would that have ended well for the show? Probably not. But the creators’ decision (which was likely also ABC’s) to opt for reticence over overt boldness ends up highlighting the somewhat bland nature of American Housewife in one fell swoop.
That former title is essentially the exact plot of the 20-minute pilot, so it has the honest angle going for it as well, and that sits better with the...

MaryAnn’s quick take…
An imperfect adaptation of an uncinematic novel is nevertheless a challenging portrait of a woman as deeply screwed up as usually only men get to be onscreen. I’m “biast” (pro): love Emily Blunt, desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I am indifferent about it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It is a sad irony that one of the underlying themes of The Girl on the Train — how women are demeaned, belittled, and infantilized as a matter of course in our culture, often to the point where we don’t even appreciate that that is what is being done to us — is reinforced by its very title. The “girl” on the train is Rachel Watson, who regularly rides the Metro-North commuter railroad into Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal and...

Damn, Jj Feild is a good actor. At five different times in Turn: Washington's Spies Season 3 Episode 9, his Major John Andre suddenly realizes that he knows nothing and is completely shocked by pretty much everyone with whom he comes in contact.
You would think when his former lover Philomena told him that she’s pregnant, at least his eyes would register a bit of surprise. Nope. He didn’t even flinch!
What would have been an unnerving revelation for most men (past or present) turned out to be the least shocking part of Andre’s day.
Shock No. 1: Major Hewlett barges in (in the most polite way possible, of course. Miss you already, Major!) to reveal to Andre the identity of the real Culper, and to remind him that the Rebel Spy Abe Woodhull was being entertained by Andre himself a few months back.
