Jon Stewart used the April 22 episode of “The Daily Show” to eviscerate the media for giving way too much attention to Donald Trump’s ongoing hush money trial. The host said the legal battle is both “a test of the fairness of the American legal system” and “a test of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way.” Stewart determined that the media is failing when it comes to the latter.
Throwing to footage from across cable news networks, including MSNBC host Chris Hayes proclaiming this is “the trial of the century” and various media outlets reporting on Trump’s trips to the courthouse in detail, Stewart fired back: “Perhaps, if we limit the coverage to the issues at hand, and try not to create an all-encompassing spectacle of the most banal of details, perhaps that would help?”
“Seriously, are we going to follow this guy to court every fucking day?...

One of the benefits of hosting any sort of news or discussion program on TV is an authorization to talk. Now some TV journalists and personalities are also being given permission to bite.
NBCUniversal needs to get out the proverbial Bactine after being savaged earlier this week by many of its top news personalities over the hire made by NBC News executives of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel. McDaniel was, until Wednesday, to have been a prominent political-news analyst weighing in on topics as the 2024 presidential election drew close. But the prospect of paying someone who had openly tried to help former President Donald Trump discredit the results of the 2020 election raised the internal alarms of many NBC News anchors and many of them — including Joe Scarborough, Joy Reid, Rachel Maddow and Nicolle Wallace — took significant time on Monday to push back against the decision, with Maddow spending...

Ronna McDaniel is out at NBC News.
The former Republican National Committee chair was hired as a paid on-air contributor for the network, a move that received backlash from the network’s own anchors.
Rachel Maddow, Chuck Todd, Joy Reid, Nicolle Wallace, and Lawrence O’Donnell were among the MSNBC hosts who voiced their opposition to McDaniel‘s hire.
Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzeznski said, “To be clear, we believe NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices to provide balance in their election coverage. But it should be conservative Republicans, not a person who used her position of power to be an anti-democracy election denier, and we hope NBC will reconsider its decision. It goes without saying that she will not be a guest on Morning Joe in her capacity as a paid contributor.”
Now, it has been announced that McDaniel has been dropped by NBC News.

NBC News has officially decided to part ways with its newest on-air contributor, Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chair, just days after she was hired.
“After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,” NBC News Group chairman Cesar Conde wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon. “No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal.”
Separately, McDaniel has been dropped by CAA, the agency that repped her in the deal with the network, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
The former Republican National Committee chair was hired by NBC News on March 22 as an on-air contributor, and she made her NBC debut on Sunday’s edition of Meet the Press, where she was grilled by Kristen Welker.

The NBC News career of Ronna McDaniel, the former head of the Republican National Committee, has been ended before it had ever truly begun.
NBC News said Tuesday that it would cut ties with McDaniel after a phalanx of popular anchors rebelled against a decision to make her a political contributor who would offer commentary through the 2024 presidential election. NBC News executives had hoped to gain new insight to the thinking of the modern Republican party, but NBC News journalists could not stomach the prospect of putting McDaniel on air after she had helped former President Donald Trump in his efforts to undermine the integrity of the 2020 election, which was won by current officeholder Joe Biden.

A long line of MSNBC’s most popular anchors spent Monday calling out the network’s corporate sibling, NBC News, for its hire of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel in a stunning display of internal rifts laid bare on the TV screen.
The hire of McDaniel as a contributor is “inexplicable,” Rachel Maddow said on MSNBC Monday night as part of a half-hour commercial-free monologue that painted the former politico as one in a line of fascists and would-be usurpers who have tried to take over America’s political process. McDaniel, who during her time as RNC head helped former President Donald Trump in his efforts to nullify the 2020 presidential election, said Maddow, “is part of an ongoing project to get rid of our system of government.”

Update: Rachel Maddow devoted the top of her MSNBC show to outlining the reasons for her objections to NBC News’ hire of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel, calling the decision “inexplicable” and challenging some of the network spin in response to the backlash.
“I will tell you, the fact that Ms. McDaniel is on the payroll at NBC News, to me that is inexplicable,” she said. “You wouldn’t hire a wiseguy, you wouldn’t hire a made man like a mobster to work in a D.A.’s office, right? You wouldn’t hire a pickpocket to work as a Tsa screener. So I find her decision to put her on the payroll inexplicable, and I hope they will reverse their decision.”

Ronna McDaniel was supposed to be the new star contributor at NBC News. Now her position there is looking increasingly untenable.
NBC News hired the former Republican National Committee chief last week, betting that her recent access to the Trump campaign and Republican politicians would make her a valuable analyst as the 2024 election cycle intensified. But in recent days, her ability to do just that seems unclear. On Monday, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski suggested on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that NBC News reconsider its hire. A day earlier, Chuck Todd took to “Meet The Press” to chastise NBC News bosses for making moderator Kristen Welker conduct a news interview she had previously booked with McDaniel now that she was a paid operative of NBC and potentially less able to respond truthfully to hard questions.
It seems very likely that her position at NBC will remain in the news for the immediate future.

Jonathan Glazer’s searing Oscars acceptance speech, in which the Zone of Interest filmmaker referenced the Israel-Gaza conflict and said that he refuted his “Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation,” has led to a fierce reaction on social media.
In his prepared speech accepting the 2024 Academy Award for best international film, Glazer thanked his partners on The Zone of Interest, a haunting film about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, and then made a statement addressing both his work and a reference to the Israel-Gaza conflict. “All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say, ‘Look what they did then’; rather, ‘what we do now,'” Glazer said. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It’s shaped all of our past and present.”

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

Update: Donald Trump mocked Nikki Haley’s remarks to supporters after she lost the New Hampshire primary, telling supporters that “she was doing a speech like she won.”
“She didn’t win, she lost,” Trump said.
“Who the hell was the imposter that went up on the stage before and claimed victory. She did very poorly. She had to win. The governor said, she is going to win. She is going to win. And she failed badly.”
He seemed especially irritated during the speech, telling the crowd, “I don’t get too angry. I get even.”
He explained why he decided to focus on Haley in his speech, given that he’s all but assured to get the nomination.
“I find in life you can’t let people get away with bullshit. You just can’t do that. And when I watched her, in her fancy dress that probably wasn’t so fancy,...

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

If you follow politics or regularly consume the news, you might feel like Donald Trump is all around you. As you read this, you might well be imagining, with unsettling precision, the former president’s voice billowing filth and invective in your brain.
Chris Hayes, the MSNBC primetime host, thinks about Trump a lot — and he’s sick of it. “It’s a kind of prison,” he tells Rolling Stone of his, and the nation’s, preoccupation with the former president.
Yet, Hayes says, the media needs to cover Trump more.

MSNBC wants a piece of the live events business, and it is bringing back a familiar face to lead its effort in the space.
MSNBC is launching a live events brand called “MSNBC Live” next year, combining live interviews and panel discussions, as well as forums and other events featuring MSNBC anchors and talent.
The cable news channel is bringing back Luke Russert, who served as a correspondent and anchor for NBC News and MSNBC from 2008-2016, to serve as the host and creative director of the event brand.
“At these events MSNBC regulars will be talking with some of America’s leading thinkers. It is our hope we can advance important dialogue and reach a measure of understanding as well as remember what makes America great — its unity in diversity and commitment to democratic ideals,” says Russert. “I want people to leave better informed and inspired to promote positive action.

Viewership for the fourth Republican debate fell since the last event, drawing more than 4 million for Nexstar’s NewsNation and its simulcast on The CW.
But it was a record night for NewsNation, which drew 1.6 million viewers for its debate coverage, the largest audience in its history, according to Nielsen’s early fast national numbers. Another 2.5 million watched the simulcast on The CW, giving it its most watched program since 2018. In the 25-54 demo, NewsNation drew more than 350,000 viewers and The CW drew nearly 500,000.
That said, the debate audience was down from the last event in November, continuing a trend since the first GOP gathering. Some 7.51 million watched the Nov. 8 debate across NBC News and its streaming and digital platforms. That debate averaged 6.86 million viewers on NBC alone.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes unpacked the news that Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan for speaker of the House on Friday night, explaining how Jordan as speaker would be a “near-worst-case scenario” in the wake of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ouster.
As the Republican party now scrambles to fill the speaker of the House role after this week’s vote to expel McCarthy, Donald Trump – the heavy favorite to win the Republican nomination for president in the 2024 election who is also under four indictments – endorsed Rep. MSNBC’s Joy Reid took aim at Greg Gutfeld on Friday after the Fox News host called for an American civil war and said elections don’t result in an effective means of governance.
Reid rightfully went personal on “The ReidOut,” pointing out that if such a war were to break out, Gutfeld would certainly not be a willing participant.

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.
But, thanks to last week’s deal between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), all of the late-night shows will return to the air on Monday, Oct. 2 with brand new episodes. As The Streamable noted last week, because these types of shows are generally day-to-day operations, they are able to get back to airing new episodes almost immediately.

It’s easy to envision Robin Roberts sitting down for an in-depth interview with a hard-to-nab celebrity or landing a “get” with an inspirational newsmaker. How about Robin Roberts helping to solve a mystery ripped from the headlines?
Such a notion is a distinct possibility thanks to a new ABC News Studios production unit that Roberts will lead. The move is the latest by ABC News to increase the number of projects it creates not just for the Disney broadcast network, but for streaming outlets such as Hulu and Disney+
“The creation of this unit offers a unique opportunity to tell new and compelling stories in a wide range of formats, and we’ll also explore genres people might not expect from me,” Roberts tells Variety via e-mail.

Jen Psaki won’t just be on MSNBC on the weekend. Although she will continue to anchor her flagship show on Sundays at noon, the former Joe Biden White House Press Secretary will also begin commentating on the NBCUniversal outlet on Mondays at 8/7c, a slot that the regular host of that hour, Chris Hayes, usually has off. The new schedule will start on Monday, September 25. Psaki will also continue contributing a regular column for the network’s morning newsletter, MSNBC Daily. The move will create a new Monday block at MSNBC, which will see Psaki lead into Rachel Maddow’s weekly program on Mondays at 9/8c. Chris Hayes was blunt Wednesday night while discussing the Republican Party’s climate policy, calling the GOP’s opposition to even weak measures “deranged.”
“This strategy is literally, just actively hurl ourselves into the fire. Let a thousand hurricanes bloom,” Hayes said, warning viewers that it will become national policy should a Republican win the presidency in 2024.
The inspiration for the commentary was Hurricane Idalia, which slammed into Florida this week on its way up the eastern seaboard. The storm intensified rapidly, a direct result of climate change raising the temperature of the ocean that makes tropical storms more frequent, powerful, and dangerous.
As Hayes noted, the mainstream position of the Republican Party is staunch opposition to doing anything about the problem. Indeed, while Hayes didn’t mention him, at the recent Republican Primary Debate, Vivek Ramaswamy outright embraced climate denialism, insisting — falsely — that climate change is a hoax.
But Hayes focused on Florida Gov.

When Sean Hannity handed off his Fox News program to Laura Ingraham last Thursday night, he had company.
On-air switches between cable-news hosts make for bright moments on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, with the audiences at home and producers in studio looking at warm exchanges between personalities like Hannity and Ingraham or Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. The chatter between former CNN hosts Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon generated so much attention that producers often let the segment bleed into Lemon’s first segment of the night and even time reserved for commercials. These days, Hannity has begun letting a new crowd bear witness.
Since January of this year, Hannity has been hosting some editions of his regular 9 p.m. program in front of a live, in-studio audience consisting of a few dozen people. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Fox News viewers can see the crowd as “Hannity” goes to commercial break,...

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is running as a Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential race and appeared Wednesday on Fox News, taking aim at the likely Democratic incumbent and current president, Joe Biden.
Christie targeted Biden even after “America’s Newsroom” ran graphics and discussed the fact Donald Trump is not only handily polling ahead of Ron DeSantis but leading a pack of also-rans that include Christie, who was shown as polling at a meager 2% in the Republican race.
“Record inflation, botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, sending the country into an educational tailspin because we’re excluding parents from their children’s education,” Christie reeled off, taking a page out of the DeSantis playbook before show host Bill Hemmer interrupted.
“The border,” Hemmer said, blankly.

MSNBC dominated Fox News and CNN during Friday’s ratings as cable news channels turned their attention to cover former President Donald Trump’s newly unsealed federal indictment.

Tiffany Cross said she was “disheartened” by the sudden cancellation of her MSNBC show “The Cross Connection” on Friday morning and questioned that the decision happened four days before the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
“I am disheartened to learn of MSNBC’s decision to cancel The Cross Connection, at such a crucial time—four days before the midterm elections,” Cross said in a message posted to Twitter. “From the beginning, we were intentional about centering communities of color, elevating issues and voices often ignored by the mainstream media, and disrupting the echo chambers. She added, “Fresh off the heels of a ‘racial reckoning,’ as so many have called it, we see that with progress there is always backlash. Now is not the time to retreat to politics or journalism as unusual. It is my hope that the last two years at MSNBC have been disruptive and transformative, changing how politics are discussed and making policy more digestible. Tiffany Cross didn’t want to leave MSNBC, and feels she has more to do.
The outspoken weekend anchor, whose show was cancelled earlier Friday by the NBCUniversal-owned cable outlet, said in a statement Friday night that her freewheeling, outspoken style was on the mark for a disruptive era in politics, and indicated she would continue her work elsewhere.
“I am disheartened to learn of MSNBC’s decision to cancel my show, ‘The Cross Connection,’ at such a crucial time — four days before the midterm elections,” Cross said, while spotlighting the program’s ratings. “And we were intentional about centering marginalized voices of the rising majority — from all communities of color.”
MSNBC cut ties with Cross unexpectedly Friday morning, telling her production staff of the decision Friday morning, according to three people familiar with the matter. A rotating group of anchors will lead her weekend hours until a replacement is found,...

Tiffany Cross, the MSNBC weekend host who was known for running the freewheeling Saturday commentary program “Cross Connection,” is leaving the NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet.
Her production staff was informed of the decision Friday morning, according to three people familiar with the matter. MSNBC declined to make executives available for comment, and Cross could not be reached for immediate comment.
MSNBC decided not to renew Cross’ contract after two years, according to one of these people, and severed ties with her immediately. A rotating group of anchors will lead her weekend hours until a replacement is found, and the production staff assigned to her show are believed to be likely to stay in place.
There has been speculation that Cross’ relationship with MSNBC was becoming frayed, according to two of these people, with executives at the network growing concerned about the anchor’s willingness to address statements made by cable-news...

The typical evening-news program give viewers all the news they need to know in less than 30 minutes. John Dickerson’s take on the format aims to unpack the headlines of the day and offer something most news programs don’t — perspective.
Dickerson will lead CBS News’ step into an emerging frontier, an evening-news program that doesn’t air on a TV network, but streams instead, presumably for a younger, more tech-savvy audience. “CBS News Prime Time With John Dickerson,” a new hour-long program, debuts tonight at 7 p.m. eastern on CBS News’ streaming outlets, and will appear live Monday through Thursday. The goal is for Dickerson, a former host of “Face The Nation” and a longtime political journalist and analyst, to provide insight and historical context around the events of the day so viewers gain a deeper understanding of the news cycle.
Dickerson intends to use the program to “to explore the world,...

Joy Reid will start her new weeknight MSNBC show on July 20, filling the 7 Pm Et slot that has been vacated since the departure of Chris Matthews.

Tina Urbanski, who had been executive producer of Hardball, will be executive producer of the new show.

MSNBC said Thursday it would give Joy Reid the 7 p.m. slot that had been anchored for years by departed journalist Chris Matthews, handing the important task of assembling early-evening weekday audiences for its primetime schedule to a Black woman – still a rarity in the cable-news business in 2020.
Her program will be called “The ReidOut,” and will be based in Washington, D.C., starting on July 20. Reid’s new role has been widely expected since The Wall Street Journal reported last month she was in consideration.
MSNBC doesn’t appear to be changing the nature of the hour, which has for years been filled by Matthews’ “Hardball,” an hour devoted to the politics of the day. Matthews, a former political speechwriter and one-time aide to former U.S. House Speaker Tip O’Neill, was immersed in Beltway rhythms. He retired from his program abruptly in March, coming under scrutiny for...

Joy Reid is in talks to fill the 7 Pm Et slot once held by Chris Matthews and his longtime MSNBC show Hardball, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
Reid currently hosts Am Joy, a weekend program on the network, and has been a substitute host for other nighttime hosts including Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes. She will host a special on Friday, The Road to Reform: A Special Report with Joy Reid, in that time slot.
An MSNBC spokeswoman declined comment. The Journal reported that an agreement has not yet been reached.
Matthews retired abruptly from his show in March, and a rotating group of hosts have been filling his slot since then.
Reid has been a political columnist, blogger and commentator, having started her career in Florida. She hosted The Reid Report for MSNBC from 2014 to 2015, before hosting the weekend show starting in 2016.
In 2018, she apologized...
