Daniel Fienberg: It’s hard to tell the story of Spring TV in 2023 without discussing HBO’s Succession and Barry, as well as Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. Those three shows, two definitely finished and one seemingly coming to an end, represented four of the last six Emmy wins for outstanding drama and comedy series, as well as many nominations for acting, writing and directing. With their shocking deaths, wild deviations in tone and, in the case of Ted Lasso, expanded episode running times, they’ve dominated social media and water cooler conversations since March.
That’s why we’re not going to focus on them here. There’s more to TV than Barry, Succession and Ted Lasso — or at least HBO and Apple hope there is after the upcoming awards season concludes.
Even not counting the holy trinity of the spring, there were buzzy returning shows — Fxx’s Dave!

The place you order replacement phone charger cables and bulk toilet paper from, making TV shows? Oh, how we laughed back in 2014! What kind of shows would Amazon make? The Loneliness of the Long Distance Delivery Driver? Warehouse Wars? Sorry We Missed You: a dating show where contestants can only speak through a letterbox?.
We were idiots in 2014. In almost a decade, Prime Video – as it’s now styled – has invested in some of the best drama around. It hasn’t stuck to one genre or poured everything into a single big-hitter, but has commissioned widely and mostly, very well. There have been bold sci-fi and alt-history that doesn’t pull its punches, from The Man in the High Castle to The Underground Railroad and The Power, as well as culture-redefining LGBTQ+ shows like Transparent, zany comedies like Mozart in the Jungle, action thrillers Reacher and Jack Ryan, and cool collaborations like Swarm.

Tensions are rising between married couple Margot and Rob despite their best efforts to reconcile in The Power. The parents, played by Toni Collette and John Leguizamo, are trying to keep their family together as Rob is facing possible jail time for a federal offense. In the TV Insider exclusive clip above, reconciliation proves to be difficult. The Power is an emotionally-driven global thriller, based on Naomi Alderman’s international award-winning novel. Suddenly, and without warning, teenage girls worldwide develop the power to electrocute people at will. The characters span from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, as the Power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world. Margot and Rob’s daughter, Joss (Auli’i Cravalho), is one of the super-powered teens, and with Margot being the mayor of Seattle, this causes a score of problems. They now have...

One of the central themes of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 novel The Power is how, sometimes, systems have to be completely rebooted in order for them to work the way they’re supposed to.
Similarly, when Raelle Tucker joined Prime Video’s adaptation of the book a few years ago, the sci-fi series’ entire first season had already been shot… yet was nowhere near ready for public consumption. Tucker’s arrival as showrunner equaled a reset.

At first glance, The Power may seem like a superhero story crossed with The Handmaid’s Tale, but it is so much more than that. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, The Power is an epic story about not just women who are imbued with a mysterious new ability but also how the structure of control and hierarchy of our world shifts because of this change.
The Power posits what it would be like if teenage girls across the globe suddenly manifested the ability to harness electricity through their bodies. Some fear the power, while others embrace what it means for those subjugated because of their gender. In a global tale set in various countries, The Power shows us how fear changes the perspective of men, women, and those who identify with a different sex. Sometimes funny, often dramatic, and always shocking, The Power is a commentary on our...

“The Power” has arrived on Prime Video, and it marks a somewhat rare occurrence on television: a show about and for women, directed almost entirely by women. Naturally, that was pretty appealing to the women in it — but also to some of the men.
The series, adapted from Naomi Alderman’s 2016 book of the same name, follows multiple women all around the world, as they all begin to develop a new organ in their body that allows them to not only control but expel electricity at will. It is powerful, it awakens in adolescence, and it is only found in women.
Naturally, the power dynamics of the world are immediately shifted. Young women feel emboldened, and truly safe for the first time in their existence. But, if you’re thinking this is a superhero-esque series, you’d be a bit off. In fact, that the series is not about superheroics...

Based on Naomi Alderman’s 2017 novel, Prime Video’s television adaptation of “The Power” has a great ensemble cast of young actresses as well as veterans like John Leguizamo and Toni Collete.
Girls mysteriously start exhibiting electrical capabilities — expelling powerful shocks and sparks through their hands — after having developed a new organ near their collar bones that must have come from evolution.
Some respond fearfully to “the power” while others are more curious, and the gender-flipped situation — girls developing electrical discharge superpowers and using it to fight back against the patriarchy — makes great social commentary.

This The Power review contains no spoilers.
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely etc. etc., but not (yet) in Prime Video‘s excellent adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 best selling work of speculative fiction. The novel, developed with help from a mentorship with Margaret Atwood, imagines what would happen if teenage girls suddenly developed the ability to produce electrical charges through their fingers.
The series takes this premise, updates it slightly for a 2023 audience and creates a show that feels complex, nuanced, emotional, and, yes, electric. This is not a simplistic girls against boys diatribe. It’s not a diatribe at all, but a fascinating thought experiment translated into colorful, dynamic TV, with a banging sound track and an impressive ensemble cast.
With an all-female writers room, the show was developed by Alderman, Raelle Tucker and Sarah Quintrell, with Tucker as the showrunner. They’ve created a powerhouse.

In 2017, Naomi Alderman’s novel about teenage girls suddenly acquiring the ability to shoot electricity from their fingers arrived right on time. The defiance of women and girls was a constant part of the news cycle, from the Women’s March in Washington DC to the rise of the #MeToo movement. They were making noise about the ways that misogyny was impacting their lives, and holding perpetrators to account. Six years later, andThe Power has now been adapted into a big-budget thriller series for Prime Video. With a punchy script from an all-female writers’ room –including Sarah Quintrell, Raelle Tucker and Alderman herself – and characters who both inspire and feel accessible, the story is as timely as it has ever been.
“Every revolution begins with a spark,” an opening voiceover tells us. “We never dared to imagine it; a world that was built for us, where we wrote the rules.

The Power (2023-)
An “electrifying” series for more than one reason, and that is that these girls have the ability to electrify people at will. Quite the ability and one that serves as a reflection on gender and the abuse of power in this series that premieres on Prime Video on March 31.
Enjoy it.

In an episode of “The Power,” Prime Video’s series adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s acclaimed speculative novel, Roxy (Ria Zmitrowicz) tries to walk into a nightclub without flashing the ID that would reveal she’s underage. The swole sentinel manning the door tries to turn her away until Roxy creates a tiny lightning bolt between her thumb and index finger. The bouncer immediately backs down, now aware of the mortal threat Roxy poses, but she isn’t finished toying with him. “I’m not going in ‘til he smiles at me,” she says, goading him until he approximates joy. “There…you look nice when you smile.”
The cleverly gender-flipped scene represents “The Power” at its best, and there are thrilling moments throughout the show that justify the reportedly intense bidding war for the rights to Alderman’s novel. Amazon’s The Power does not want for ambition. Like the Naomi Alderman novel it’s based on, it’s set in a world transformed by a quirk of biology that suddenly gifts teenage girls the ability to generate electric jolts from their fingertips — and like the Alderman novel, it attempts a forest-and-the-trees approach to the premise. Its narrative encompasses half a dozen leads spread out over three or four continents, and includes plotlines as intimate as a teenage romance and as sweeping as national political movements.
But if the broadness of its scope is intriguing, the broadness of its storytelling sometimes comes as a disappointment. Particularly in the first half of the nine-episode season (of which critics screened the first eight hourlong chapters), The Power too often relies on archetypes over complex characterizations, and talking points over nuanced conversations — though by the final installments, it does manage to generate...

"Acting really helps me be a better human," Auli'i Cravalho says ahead of the premiere of "The Power," a new Prime Video series based on the 2016 book of the same name by Naomi Alderman. Cravalho may still be best known for voicing Moana, but she's certainly not stuck in the plucky princess role. "I am really looking to play characters that I have not played before," she tells Popsugar. "Acting - what I love most about it - is that it makes me more kind. It brings out a different part of me because I need to relate to these characters that I play. I've played mean girls, I have played loners, [and] I've played people who've experienced loss."
Cravalho was just 16 when "Moana" came out, ushering her into Hollywood stardom. As the titular character, she sang the Oscar-nominated "How Far I'll Go," and the "Moana" soundtrack continues to break records with Cravalho front and center.

A thought-provoking yet horrifying cautionary tale of repression, violence, and the exercise of power, Prime Video’s upcoming drama The Power is all set to premiere on Prime Video. Based on an award-winning science-fiction novel of the same name by British author Naomi Alderman, The Power is a story about four teenage girls who suddenly and mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will. From London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, the ‘power’ emerges from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world. In face of these unprecedented events, political unrest and gender disparity take a never-seen-before twist.
In The Power, it is the skein – an organ made up of a striated tissue near a woman’s collarbone which is the source of the electrostatic power released via the hands – that grounds the show in a physical reality.

They’re the new, and very fashionable, requirement on every film and TV production set, and recognised for helping particularly young actors navigate sex scenes without fear, but intimacy coordinators aren’t for everyone, it appears.
Toni Collette has revealed she feels happier working on intimate scenes without one, and has on occasion asked them to leave the set.
Collette, who stars in The Power, coming to Prime Video on March 31, told the London Times newspaper:
“I think it’s only been a couple of times where they’ve been brought in, and I have very much trusted and felt at ease with the people I was working with. It just felt like those people who were brought in to make me feel more at ease were actually making me feel more anxious. They weren’t helping, so I asked them to leave.”

Toni Collette had no time for an interviewer who asked about her recent divorce.
In December last year, the Hereditary star announced that she was separating from her husband Dave Galafassi after 20 years of marriage.
The announcement came after photographs of Galafassi were published in the Daily Mail showing him and another woman kissing, sitting together and holding hands on a beach in Sydney, Australia.
In an interview with The Times to promote her forthcoming Amazon Prime series, The Power, the Australian actor was asked whether meditation was helping her amid “a shaky old time with her relationship”.

Deadline understands that the network is developing drama series Drug Spies, from Noah Pink, who wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Tetris movie at Apple, author Kirk Wallace Johnson and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director Kari Skogland.
We hear that the original series, which is inspired by true events, tells the stories of spies who work on behalf of multinational drug companies.
FX is understood to have beaten out a number of rivals to land the project, which is in the early stages of development, in a competitive bidding process.
Sister, the company run by Liz Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone, which was behind hit HBO series Chernobyl, is producing in association with Oil & Cattle. Sister is also behind Netflix’s upcoming six-parter Eric, starring Benedict Cumberbatch playing a puppeteer whose son goes missing in 1980s Manhattan from Abi Morgan,...

If the recent trailer is any indication, Prime Video‘s The Power promises to present both a realistic portrayal of what the sudden onset of superpowers in a subset of the population would be like and a potent statement about the lack of agency for young women in modern times. Set in a world where teenage girls develop the ability to generate electrical charges from their bodies, the series explores the complex power dynamics that arise as a result.
But what kind of show is The Power exactly? Is it the origin story for a kind of superhero race? Is it another sci-fi angle on The Handmaid’s Tale depicting the threats to women from a male-dominated world? Or is it an exploration of how society would react to a potential force for good or evil suddenly arising within humanity worldwide? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

Exclusive: The Power, Prime Video’s global thriller drama based on Naomi Alderman’s feminist sci-fi book, continues to undergo personnel changes. Emmy-winning The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano, who had been with the project since its early stages, has exited as both a director and an executive producer.
Morano directed the first two episodes with Leslie Mann and Tim Robbins. After she wrapped the episodes in March 2022, Morano opted not to continue on with the series due to creative differences as the series headed to reshoots with Mann and Robbins both exiting. Toni Collette and Josh Charles eventually were cast in the roles, and Raelle Tucker came on board as showrunner. Upon her exit, Morano also requested to be removed from the credits, which I hear Amazon has agreed to, so she will no longer be listed as a director or executive producer.

While Disney+ and HBO Max are overrun by costumed Marvel and DC superheroes, Prime Video has carved out a niche for itself as an alternate source of ultra-violent Image Comics and Dynamite Entertainment adaptations like "Invincible" and "The Boys." With "The Power," Prime Video is looking more to the girls now, along with Naomi Alderman's bestselling 2016 novel, for a different kind of literary, super-powered tale: one that traffics in X-Men-like tropes yet ditches both yellow spandex and black leather for plainclothes feminist themes.
Winner of the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction in 2017, "The Power" has been described by The Washington Post as "our era's 'Handmaid's Tale.'" The story, per the publisher Penguin, is set in a near future where "girls find that with a flick of their fingers, they can inflict agonizing pain and even death." Suddenly, women are the dominant sex, able to reshape the world as an electrified matriarchy.

As our present-day dystopia grows increasingly dire, the more relevant speculative science fiction becomes. We've seen it before with Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days," a near-30-year-old film that effectively predicted the rise of voyeurism in social media and a growing police state in the U.S. We've also seen it more recently with "The Handmaid's Tale," a 1980s novel that felt less like a "what if" and more like a warning. For all its terrifying predictions, "The Handmaid's Tale" became a proper phenomenon when Hulu adapted it into a series in 2017. Success like that isn't easy to replicate, but competitors have certainly been making the effort. Amazon Studios is the latest streamer to bring a similar story to the fore, adapting "The Power" as a series starring Toni Collette. Given that's it's also based on a work of speculative sci-fi, there's already a bit of buzz about this project.
