Directed by Maria Friedman, the musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth spans three decades in the lives of three longtime friends – composer Franklin (Groff), playwright Charley (Radcliffe) and writer Mary (Mendez). Originally produced on Broadway in 1981, the musical has some of Sondheim’s most celebrated songs including “Now You Know,” “Not A Day Goes By” and “Old Friends.”
The musical also has presents one of Sondheim’s twistiest and most poignant tricks: Audiences witness the characters’ lives unfold backward, from their fractured adult friendships to their youthful optimism. While the musical has long been considered one of Sondheim’s most difficult to stage,...

Speaking to Collider, Reeves opened up about the possibility of a third season of Batman: Caped Crusader. "That is something... I mean there's all kinds of metrics by which that is landed upon. Time is flying faster than Rhaenys fell to her death this season on “House of the Dragon,” which is to say, wow, somehow the Season 2 finale of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off is already upon us.
Despite multiple clips leaking on social media earlier this week after what HBO referred to as an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” the finale (airing Sunday at 9/8 on HBO and Max) is still the most anticipated watch of the weekend that isn’t related to the Summer Olympics. In the penultimate episode, Emma D’Arcy’s Queen Rhaenyra was last seen gathering an unconventional group of dragonriders — including a blacksmith and a drunk — to set the stage for the finale’s major conflict with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who fled to King’s Landing when he saw Rhaenyra’s growing forces. If you’ve read the source material, you likely know how this will end.

Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm has returned to the world of the Dark Knight with Batman: Caped Crusader on Prime Video, but he once had the opportunity to do a proper revival of The Animated Series. If you’re wondering why that didn’t happen, it’s because he turned it down.
While speaking with The Wrap, Timm said that Warner Bros. approached him four or five years ago with the idea of bringing back Batman: The Animated Series. At the time, the studio was about to launch its own streaming service and clearly saw the draw of new episodes. “They said, ‘Hey, how would you feel about going back and making some more ‘B:tas’ episodes?’ And I’m like, ‘Nah, we’d been there, we’d done that.’ I wasn’t interested in just revisiting that world,” Timm explained.

This Batman review contains spoilers.
Everything you need to know about Batman: Caped Crusader happens in the opening credits. Sepia-tone shots of Batman glowering from a rooftop or skulking through empty rooms give way to images of the Gotham police office and gangsters firing tommy guns, all set to a moody, mournful score. Fancy art-deco script introduces the creatives involved, including producer credits for J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves.
Then there’s Bruce Timm, whose influence on the series is unquestionable from the moment the credits scene kicks off. Caped Crusader plays like an updated version of the great Batman: The Animated Series, which Timm created with Eric Radomski. Male characters may not have the same barrel chests and female figures don’t all have hourglass shapes, but the same linework and designs from the ’90s show is present. Each frame appears painted on black matte paper again,...

It's a full month at Prime Video and Freevee! This August, get ready for the Season 2 premiere of Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Based partially on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” and set thousands of years before the events of the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the epic series covers the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the forging of the eponymous Rings of Power, the rise of the Sauron, and the last alliance between elves and men. The second season will premiere late in the month on Aug. 29, but first, take your own quest there and back again: on Aug. 1, both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies will be available on the streamer.
The new month will also usher in the premiere of “Batman: Caped Crusader,” a new noir take on “Batman: The Animated Series” from original creator Bruce Timm.

Batman: Caped Crusader is only a day away from being released and I have already watched the series and reviewed it on our site. The only thing I want to say is that I am so excited for all the Batman and specifically Batman: The Animated Series fans to watch this series. The upcoming Prime Video series was described as the spiritual successor to The Animated Series and that’s exactly what it is.
Set in the 1940s, Caped Crusader follows a new-to-the-job Batman who doesn’t have many fancy gadgets but what he does have is a brilliant mind for clues and his fists to keep the weirdos and costumed supervillains in check. The first name you see in the opening credits of Prime Video’s new Batman: Caped Crusader cartoon isn’t Hamish Linklater, who plays Bruce Wayne, nor anyone else in the voice cast. It isn’t executive Matt Reeves, who has earned a fair share of Bat-credibility from directing Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Nor is it executive producer J.J. Abrams, who even in his fallow post-Rise of the Skywalker period remains one of the biggest names in nerd pop culture.

Is “Batman: The Animated Series” the most beloved, well, animated series of the ’90s to not yet receive a reboot? Warner Animation stablemates “Tiny Toon Adventures” and “Animaniacs” have been revived for streamers; when “King of the Hill” comes back (supposedly in 2025), both of Mike Judge’s most popular shows will have made their return; and “The Simpsons” never actually left the air. Now, on the heels of “X-Men ’97” comes “Batman: Caped Crusader” — not an actual continuation of the Warner-produced, Fox-aired Batman saga, but sort of a long-overdue spiritual successor to what many consider the definitive non-comics portrayal of the character. The strongest connection to the previous show: This one is also spearheaded by Bruce Timm, who cocreated the earlier series and remained a dominant force in its development.
This makes “Caped Crusader” both a major event and a potential disappointment; maybe that’s why it’s airing...

Bruce Timm’s Batman: Caped Crusader begins with a group of armed goons getting up to no good in the middle of the night. “There ain’t no freakin’ Batman,” one of them confidently proclaims, only to have the last word cut off by an expertly thrown Batarang. It’s a quick, effective way of telling us where in this oft told and re-told story we’ll be picking up: This Batman might still be early enough in his crimefighting career that his very existence is in doubt, but the caped crusader (gruffly voiced by Hamish Linklater) is no beginner.
Timm, creator of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, has described Caped Crusader as less like Frank Miller’s original story comic Year One and something closer to Week Two. This isn’t Christian Bale’s Batman clambering around Gotham with a ski mask and a handful of gadgets.

Fans at this year's San Diego Comic-Con were treated to an early screening of Batman: Caped Crusader, but the biggest news which came out of the panel relates to a potentially controversial casting decision.
While fans of the Dark Knight's corner of the DC Universe will know the vigilante typically matches wits with Oswald Cobblepot, this 1940s version will have to contend with a new, female Penguin: Oswalda Cobblepot.
Entertainment Weekly caught up with Minnie Driver to discuss her role in the upcoming Prime Video series and the Good Will Hunting star says she jumped at the chance to reinvent such an iconic character. "That's what's so brilliant about what he's reimagined. The expansion of this particular character feels so timely. For such a vintage noir show, it's incredibly modern."
Driver will also get the chance to sing as Batman: Caped Crusader's Penguin, a challenge she was quick to embrace.

The forthcoming Batman: Crusader is set to highlight some of Batman's lesser-known rogues as confirmed in the latest teaser trailer.
Firebug, Gentleman Ghost, and Nocturna's powers and abilities are sure to put a fledgling Batman to the test.
The series, created by Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves, will launch all episodes on Prime Video on August 1.
Previously, Timm stated, "Batman is so early in his career that in the first episode, he’s still an urban myth. It’s not ‘Year One’, it’s more like ‘Week Two.’
Continuing, he added, "I wanted to make him kind of weird, and spooky. If you’re stuck in a room with Batman, whether you’re Commissioner Gordon or Barbara Gordon or Renee Montoya, you don’t feel comfortable. You’re kind of like, ‘What is this guy? What’s this all about?"

A new poster for Batman: Caped Crusader has been released and it sees the Dark Knight walking down what may be a familiar alleyway as the shadows of his villains loom large.
So, who do we see here? Well, from left to right, there's Onomatopoeia, Two-Face, Catwoman, The Penguin, Harley Quinn, and a mysterious masked character we're having some trouble identifying.
There's a lot of intrigue surrounding this series, particularly given the creative team involved. While it isn't the Batman: The Animated Series many fans initially hoped for, it certainly feels like a spiritual successor, even with a vastly different setting - 1940s Gotham City - and a Bruce Wayne who has only just started his vigilante career.
Back to the hero's rogues gallery, though, and it sounds like they'll be undergoing their own reinvention in the Prime Video series.

Prime Video has released the first clip from Batman: Caped Crusader and it features Gotham City's Dark Knight chasing down some crooks in the iconic Batmobile.
A lot of split screen is utilised here (Ang Lee's Hulk would be so proud) and while this is a kid's show - we recently learned it won't boast a TV-ma rating - Batman isn't holding back as he mows down his foes.
Fans have high expectations for the show, especially as it's a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series. However, the animation style and Bruce Timm's involvement are where the similarities end as this version is a rookie vigilante in 1940s-era Gotham.
It also sounds like Bruce Wayne will take a backseat as we pick up with the billionaire during his "Week Two" as Batman.
As executive producer James Tucker recently put it, "[Batman: Caped Crusader] feels more like an...

Prime Video's Batman: Caped Crusader looks set to put a completely new spin on the iconic DC Comics character. However, when the series was first announced, many fans hoped it might serve as a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series.
After all, it had been confirmed that producers Matt Reeves (The Batman) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) would be joined by the creative mastermind behind the classic series, Bruce Timm.
Instead, the show - which was offloaded by Warner Bros. Discovery to Amazon after originally being developed for Max as part of a series of cost-cutting measures - will take us to 1940s Gotham City and "Week Two" of Bruce Wayne's time as Batman.
Talking to Empire Magazine (via Toonado.com), Timm revealed that Batman: Caped Crusader will make a major change to Bruce's transformation into a masked vigilante...specifically in regards to when he chooses to suit up.

Bruce Timm is responsible for Batman: The Animated Series and returns to the Dark Knight's world with next month's Batman: Caped Crusader when the series launches on Prime Video.
Produced by Timm alongside J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series takes place in the 1940s and pulls inspiration from the character's earliest comic book adventures. The setting isn't the only big change, though, as Timm says this story plays out even earlier in Batman's vigilante career than Frank Miller's "Year One."

Last week we learned that Midnight Mass star Hamish Linklater is leading an all-star voice cast for Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. Now, Prime Video have given us our first look at the Bat in action with the enigmatic first trailer for the Batman: The Animated Series spiritual successor, which sees Gotham's finest — and worst — all out to get the Dark Knight. Check it out below:
An unhinged bomber's on the loose, supervillains — Harley Quinn! Two-Face! The Penguin! And is that Green Arrow serial killer Onomatopoeia? — stalk the streets of Gotham, and the city's vigilantist hero is also the biggest target of its leaders and citizens' disdain. "What do you think about the Batman?" asks Gotham's mayor at the start of this tense new trailer. On present evidence, what we think is that this Batman is looking pretty darn good.

The first trailer for Batman: Caped Crusader has been released and the Dark Knight is quickly revealed to be a problem for both Gotham City's underworld and its police department.
They're determined to bring the Dracula-like vigilante to justice and it appears Batman will have to fight a war on two fronts as he sets out to protect his home. This sneak peek highlights many of the villains he'll have to contend with, including Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and a few relatively obscure offerings from the comics.
The 1940s setting seems to fit Batman: Caped Crusader well and, perhaps most importantly, Hamish Linklater sounds the part. Following in the footsteps of an actor like Kevin Conroy is no easy feat, but casting for the Prime Video series appears to be on point.
"I never in a million bajillion years imagined that I would actually get the part," the actor recently admitted.

The first teaser poster for Prime Video's Batman: Caped Crusader has been released today (via Toonado.com) and it features the show's Dark Knight keeping a watchful eye over 1940s Gotham City.
It's a striking piece of imagery and that's fitting for a take on Batman which draws inspiration from the hero's earliest comic book adventures. With any luck, this means we're getting a teaser trailer sooner rather than later as the long-delayed show's August premiere is fast approaching.
Original plans called for Batman: Caped Crusader to premiere on Max, but a series of cost-cutting measures by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav saw it offloaded - along with a handful of other animated projects, including Merry Little Batman - to Amazon.

It's been confirmed today (via Vanity Fair) that Batman: Caped Crusader will premiere on Prime Video on August 1. We've also learned that the animated TV show's cast will be headlined by Midnight Mass star Hamish Linklater as the titular Dark Knight.
There's news on other cast members too, including Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch) as Harley Quinn, Christina Ricci (Wednesday) as Catwoman, and Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) as Harvey Dent.
