Jason Aldean’s controversial song “Try That in a Small Town” is pulling in big numbers.
Luminate, which tracks music sales and streams, says the song’s on-demand audio and video streams have increased by 999 percent — from 987,000 to 11.7 million — in the week after the chatter about the song exploded online.
Sales for the song are up as well: For the week before the controversy, the track only sold 1,000 units; last week it sold 228,000 units, according to Luminate.
CMT pulled the song’s music video from its rotation last Tuesday, when the clip only had roughly 350,000 views on YouTube. Now, it’s been viewed 16.6 million times.
The success has helped the song debut at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the hot country songs chart. It marks Aldean’s highest-charting single on the Hot 100 and beats out songs like Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” Luke Combs’ cover...

When most major stars with a music career retire, proper announcements are in order, if not farewell tours or tribute shows. But when Kris Kristofferson made the decision to retire last year, there were no such fireworks set off, and the public didn’t learn about it until it was tucked deep into a press release Wednesday about a management change, as if everyone already long since knew or assumed it. In a first for the Acm Awards, two artists tied for the night’s top prize: Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood each won Entertainer of the Year. “2020, right?” Underwood said, upon accepting the award and elbow-bumping host Keith Urban. Underwood won Entertainer of the Year twice before in 2008 and 2009; this is Rhett’s first Entertainer win.
Elsewhere, Luke Combs’ What You See Is What You Get was named Album of the Year. The “Lovin’ on You” singer also won Male Artist of the Year, while Maren Morris won Female Artist of the Year.

“Country music also looks like this,” Mickey Guyton said when she shared a video clip of Nashville artist Reyna Roberts on Twitter back in June. Roberts, seated at the piano with poppy-red hair down her back, was covering Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone,” and she matched the superstar note for note — and with enough unique power that even Underwood herself took notice, tweeting support.
But Roberts, raised in California and Alabama, has her own original repertoire as well. On Friday, the 23-year-old released “Stompin’ Grounds,” a debut single that proves that anthemic,...

The Country Music Association has revealed a lineup for its “Cma Summer Stay-Cay” livestream event July 1, and while the webcast is not officially a replacement for this year’s canceled Cma Festival, it does appear as if the org has attempted to pack nearly an entire fest’s worth of programming into one night.
While there won’t be any full sets to replicate what would have gone down at the festival (which was scheduled for early June before being canceled on account of the pandemic at the end of March), more than 30 performances are promised to be in the offing. Among the performers: Luke Combs, Brothers Osborne, Ingrid Andress, Lady A, Cole Swindell, Brett Young, Chris Janson, Brett Eldredge, Scotty McCreery, Jon Pardi, Maddie & Tae and Tenille Townes. Duets will be featured between Carly Pearce and Lee Brice, Jimmie Allen and Lanco, and Kassi Ashton and Jordan Davis. A...

The continued coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation of a live Independence Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, but producers are planning a virtual event for PBS.
A Capitol Fourth, now in its 40th year, will feature pre-taped performances from around the country, hosted by John Stamos and Vanessa Williams.
As was the case with the recent National Memorial Day Concert, segments for A Capitol Fourth are being pre-taped, and the special also will feature highlights from past years.
The 90-minute show also will feature a tribute by Stamos to workers on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, with Chrissy Metz singing I’m Standing with You.
There also will be segments honoring African American heroes from the past and present, and a salute to wounded warriors. A live segment of the special will feature the annual fireworks display over the D.C. skyline.

Róisín Murphy has contributed a few songs to the dance-club canon over the course of her 25-year career as a soloist and a member of Moloko. But recently, this material has become her primary focus. She released a series of collaborations with the gifted house producer Maurice Fulton in 2018, thumping, rubbery numbers that hinted at Esg and Jocelyn Brown. Last year, she put out “Incapable,” a smoldering, cold-hearted floor-filler.

Is “Old Town Road” really a country song? The verdict is in from the Country Music Association, and they say it is — at least, country enough to be announced as an early winner for Musical Event of the Year. This was the first nomination and win for Lil Nas X (who was also the only black artist nominated in any category this year) and just the second victory for collaborator Billy Ray Cyrus. The CMAs also announced Kacey Musgraves as the winner of Music Video of the Year for “Rainbow.”
“Old Town Road” made history on the Billboard charts, spending a record-breaking 19 weeks at number-one on the Hot 100. But Billboard caused a stir when they shunned the country/hip-hop hybrid from their country chart. When Cyrus came to Nas’s defense, they joined forces on a remix, which was an unprecedented success.

To be or not to be a country song? That was the question ever since “Old Town Road” became a smash hit earlier this year. The Lil Nas X song blended country music with hip-hop, but it was shunned from Billboard’s country music charts. I wondered, would it also be shunned by the Country Music Association? No, as it turns out. The Cma Awards announced their 2019 nominations on August 28, and “Old Town Road” made the cut for Musical Event of the Year. That makes Lil Nas X the only black artist nominated at this year’s awards.
After Billboard bumped “Old Town Road” from the country charts, Billy Ray Cyrus came to Lil Nas X’s defense. Then they teamed up for a remix version that topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for a record-breaking 19 weeks. That’s the version that was nominated by the CMAs. The four songs...

Brantley Gilbert offers a personal message to his son in the new song “Man That Hung the Moon.” A well-timed release ahead of the Father’s Day holiday, the ballad highlights a softer side of the rough-hewn, tattooed country singer.
