Just about a year ago, New York audiences breathlessly anticipated the arrival of a heartily hyped West End production of an American classic, Rebecca Frecknall’s pseudo-immersive revival of Cabaret. It was, if not a total disappointment, a letdown, as there was nothing particularly revelatory about Frecknall’s ever-rotating vision of Berlin’s pre-war decadence in a staging that aggressively underlined the material’s self-evident grimness.
And here we are again, anxiously receiving another of Frecknall’s London-lauded takes on an American classic into our prestige-starved harbors. This time it’s Tennessee Williams’s psychological kaleidoscope A Streetcar Named Desire, with Irish A-lister Paul Mescal as the brutish Stanley Kowalski. Is this the underwhelming Kit Kat Club all over again?
Well, yes and no. Frecknall’s production is marked by eyebrow-raising staging choices—a near-constant live drumkit, a heavy reverb on the mics, a series of interpretive dance sequences—that...

A tangled web of jealousy, deceit and dysfunction drives the trailer for BritBox’s Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero detective drama, which dropped on Friday.
Angelica Huston stars as Lady Tressilian who hosts her favorite nephew, British tennis star Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and his new wife Kay (Mimi Keene) and ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) in an aristocratic estate.
“You’ll not make a mockery of marriage under my roof,” Lady Tressilian warns Strange and his new wife as their nasty love triangle threatens to upend her summer house party. Of course being an Agatha Christie yarn set in England 1936, that disreputable unfinished business between the former sweethearts is followed by a violent death.
And that has Inspector Leach, played by Matthew Rhys, soon on the scene to ferret out a murderer from a colorful collection of suspects: a long-suffering lady’s companion, a mysterious gentleman’s valet, an exiled cousin with a grudge,...

Killing Eve season 4 wraps up the story with shocking twists, leaving fans divided on the tragic fates of the characters. Villanelle's death and Eve's transformation symbolize the metaphorical death of who they were when the series began. Despite mixed reviews, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer support the show's divisive ending as fitting for the characters' arcs.
The story of Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) reached a tragic conclusion, as the Killing Eve ending explained what happened to all its interesting characters. Killing Eve season 4's final episodes built up to the three leads Eve, Villanelle, and Carolyn all pursuing their agenda to destroy The Twelve. Eve and Villanelle knew their final destination was a secret Twelve meeting in London. While Eve danced after she officiated a wedding, Villanelle descended to the bowels of the ship and massacred The Twelve (whom the audience never saw).

A standout with a stellar ensemble, Wicked Little Letters mixes black comedy and mystery for a unique storyline. Handwriting inconsistencies raise doubt in the case, leading to a compelling investigation in the dark comedy setting.

When a devout British woman accuses her rowdy Irish neighbor of sending her a string of lewd letters in 1920s England, a police officer and the accuser’s nosy friends will stop at nothing to find out who’s to blame. The film follows an Irish immigrant, Rose Gooding (Buckley), and her former friend, Edith Swan (Colman), after Edith accuses Rose of sending her countless disparaging, obscenity-filled letters. Rose denies penning the messages — she’s already so outspoken in real life, what would be the point? — while uptight Edith insists Rose is guilty. Who else would want to do Edith harm? ‘Down in the Valley’ Review: Nicco Annan Toplines Starz’s Hit-or-Miss ‘P-Valley’ Documentary Spinoff

I like the strategy behind Starz’s Down in the Valley.
At a moment when shows are increasingly going two or even three years between seasons, a reasonably cost-effective way to maintain brand awareness is to send a beloved cast member on the road with a camera crew seeking the real version of the fictionalized series.
Struggling to get that next We Are Lady Parts season to the screen? Why not get Anjana Vasan to spotlight the lives of real 20-something Muslim women, including one or two aspiring musicians, in London? Post-production delays on House of the Dragon? Who wouldn’t watch Emma D’Arcy learning the truth about inbred contemporary royalty while looking for the perfect Negroni!
As is evident with Down in the Valley, a six-episode docuseries “inspired by P-Valley,” it’s a formula that could use some refinement.
In maybe half of its half-hour episodes, Down in the Valley...

We Are Lady Parts is back to take over the world, and Anjana Vasan and Sarah Kameela Impey are helping it succeed. The Channel 4 and Peacock co-production returns for another encore this week, following the titular band as they come off a long stint of touring, only to find that theyve got a number of road blocks, including but not limited to album recording costs and bands attempting to steal their thunder. Creator Nida Manzoor sends the band into yet another pitch-perfect frenzy, and its all anchored by a killer new soundtrack and the performances of its two stellar leads.

After a three-year hiatus, “We Are Lady Parts” is back with a triumphant second season, filled with brilliant, catchy music, fantastical comedy sequences, and dynamite performances from the entire ensemble. Unlike a lot of contemporary filmmakers who make the jump from movies to TV, creator Nida Manzoor got to return to her roots after debuting a feature between seasons.
Season 2 (certified Fresh) finds Lady Parts — the all-female punk outfit composed of Amina (Anjana Vasan), Saira (Sara Kameela Impey), Aisha (Juliette Motamed), Bisma (Faith Omole), and manager Momtaz (Lucy Shorthouse) — enjoying a successful run of tours and an actual, engaged fan base. With their sights set on recording an album, the band faces financial struggles and a major opportunity that threatens to break them apart.

‘We Are Lady Parts’ Review: Season 2 of Peacock’s Subversive Hit Recaptures the Magic and Deepens It

At a pivotal moment in their careers, Lady Parts find themselves in a heated argument. Frontwoman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) wants the group to pivot to more overtly political statements, in contrast to the jokier material that’s been their signature up to now. Her bandmates, meanwhile, are skeptical. They’d be playing “pick an atrocity, any atrocity” to shore up their own cred, one argues. Their existence as an all-female Muslim punk band is inherently political, another suggests. Besides, wouldn’t that jeopardize the success they’ve worked so hard for? Or is that only more reason to speak up?
The group never do reach a definitive decision, and the meeting ends in anger and hurt. But to the extent that a solution to their dilemma exists, they might be living it already. Peacock’s We Are Lady Parts made an immediate impression in 2021 with its refusal to limit itself to any one box.

It’s been a long time since the world has heard from We Are Lady Parts — whether the fictional all-female, all-Muslim U.K. punk band or the delightful Britcom about the group. The series began streaming on Peacock in June 2021, and it was one of the best shows of that year. That fall, a second season was announced, with enthusiastic quotes from the show’s creator/writer/director Nida Manzoor. And then … radio silence. There was no further news about when, or even if, the second season would arrive until earlier this year.

We Are Lady Parts season 2 continues to deliver strong writing with character growth. The show balances humor and heart, with nuanced storytelling that explores diverse themes. Despite a short episode count, the series successfully tackles identity, anger, and self-expression.
When a series is so good in its first season, I worry that itll go through a sophomore slump. Can good writing continue after such a solid freshman season? Writer-director Nida Manzoor proves that it most certainly can with We Are Lady Parts season 2. The Peacock series which follows five Muslim women who start a punk band builds on everything that happened at the end of season 1, developing its characters personally and as a band. The songs, including Glass Ceiling Feeling, are still excellent, if not better than in season 1, and the comedy remains genuinely funny.

Netflix’s “Black Mirror” returns to the Emmy Awards after a four-year break with its sixth season that premiered back in June 2023. The trajectory of the Charlie Brooker anthology series at the Emmys has been a tumultuous journey, particularly in recent years. The science-fiction dystopia used to dominate the limited/movie genre, winning Best Television Movie for three consecutive years at its height, before the Television Academy ruled that it must compete for the drama categories for its fifth season in 2020, ending its streak. Then the following year, the top category for limited series was changed to Best Limited or Anthology Series, placing “Black Mirror” back into the genre, but in the more competitive limited series race rather than the standalone television movies.
Despite the many radical switches, the program has managed an impressive eight wins out of 14 nominations overall. With its new string of six anthology episodes that star various actors including Salma Hayek,...

Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”
She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.
“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

Who said the heroes’ journey can’t take a little detour? In the trailer for “We Are Lady Parts” Season 2, the eponymous female punk band decides to dabble in villainy — to endlessly entertaining results.
Created by “Polite Society” writer and director Nida Manzoor, “We Are Lady Parts” premiered in the U.K. in 2018 and in the U.S. via Peacock in 2021. “I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do,” Manzoor said in a press release accompanying the Season 2 trailer.

Netflix’s anthology series “Black Mirror” has a pretty impressive BAFTA record, amassing a total of 24 nominations at both the BAFTA TV Awards and the BAFTA TV Craft Awards since 2012. Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.
Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.
The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.
Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Although some may find the new mystery Wicked Little Letters a bit lax in actual mystery, an incredibly strong cast, led by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley manages to elevate the film to a wickedly clever piece that makes up for its shortcomings with unabashed enthusiasm and excitement.
Based on an allegedly true story, Wicked Little Letters tells the tale of two women: Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who, after Rose is accused of sending Edith and several of the town’s residents several profane letters, set about investigating the crime themselves to prove that Rose is innocent.
Director Thea Sharrock – whose previous feature work includes The One and Only Ivan (2020) and Me Before You (2016) – works from a script that was penned by Jonny Sweet, an actor who has also written scripts for several episodes of the television programs Gap Year (2017), Together (2015), and Chickens (2011). The result is a...

Wicked Little Letters is one of those truth-stranger-than-fiction tales that remind us that people are weirder than we might think. Director Thea Sharrock opens her comedy/mystery tale with text informing us “more of this is true than you might think,” a comic mystery about on the sudden appearance of anonymous obscene letters sent to various residents of a quiet of early 1920s little British seaside town. The first victim is Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), prim and proper religious spinster who still lives with her parents, and who embodies the last-gasp of the Victorian era ideal of a quiet obedient woman against those uppity women demanding the vote. Suspicion quickly falls on Edith’s neighbor, a foul-mouthed new arrival from Ireland, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), who has a daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir), and...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the newly released “Wicked Little Letters,” a based-on-truth story featuring Olivia Coleman and Jessie Buckley, set in England right after World War One. In theaters on April 5th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Coleman is Edith, a mousey British woman who lives with her parents and espouses Christian values as her facade. Her neighborhood is disrupted when a saucy war widow named Rose (Jessie Buckley) moves in with a daughter and lover, and espouses a filterless and authentic cussing-like-a-sailor persona. When Rose begins to charm the neighborhood, it coincides with a number of poison pen letters Edith begins to receive, using swear-word language similar to the rhythms of Rose’s speech. Edith’s Dad Edward (Timothy Spall) has Rose arrested, and everyone assumes her guilt except for a handful of neighbors and a woman police officer named Gladys (Anjana Vasan). As the trial approaches,...
