After working as a print journalist in Surrey and then as a reporter for
Newsround (1972), she retrained as a doctor at the age of 36 and specialised as an ophthalmologist. In December 2000, she launched a non-profit organisation, Second Sight, to bring cataract eye surgeons into rural north India where the problem is particularly acute.
