Bogart represents tough masculinity in film history, embodying the American landscape’s post-war cynicism. His characters frequently fought with authority, reflecting societal worries. This documentary, produced by Kathryn Ferguson, tries to create a close connection using old footage and personal stories. However, it sometimes idealizes Bogart and overlooks some of the complexities that interest him.
The film’s authenticity is questioned by its method based on Bogart’s own words. He invites viewers to face fame’s dualities by contrasting hiss with Hollywood’s glitz. While Life Comes in Flashes aims to highlight the subject, it...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Monsieur Spade episode 6.
Monsieur Spade's action-packed ending is less a murder mystery-style parade of reveals, and more about bringing closure to the show’s major threads. In the previous installment, Jean-Pierre (Stanley Weber) was gunned down by Philippe Saint-André (Jonathan Zaccaï), who winds up arrested by the episode’s end. Although Philippe is finally pinned for something, Monsieur Spade episode 6 struggles to provide a clear-cut ending for the highly sought-after boy, Zayd (Ismaël Berqouch). Until the show's bitter end, various parties in Monsieur Spade's cast of characters fight for control of Zayd, a young code-breaker from Algeria.
Philippe’s plan for Zayd goes sideways, resulting in the deaths of several characters, including the hostile monk and the private investigator Mr. Khan. Elsewhere, Cynthia Fitzsimmons (Rebecca Root) kills George Fitzsimmons. Eventually, Virginia Dell (Alfre Woodard) sits the show’s principal characters down to parse out their alleged claims to the boy,...

The best movies on Max include not only the best Warner Bros. movies but also a ton of other films that make it one of the best destinations for entertainment in the streaming world. In January 2025, the animated Dcu brings the fifth season of Harley Quinn to the streaming service on January 16, while the new A24 film, A Different Man, premieres one day later on January 17. The biggest news for Max is the arrival of Aew All Elite Wrestling, which will simulcast its shows on Max and add its entire pay-per-view library to the service.
More big news for animated Dcu properties is that the first season of James Gunn's Creature Commandos has been such a success that Max renewed it for a second season before the first one wraps up its run. Max also announced in December 2024 that it was bringing HBO back to the streaming service with...

Last week, the Broadway play All In: Comedy About Love got very dramatic about money – weekly box office, specifically, with grosses topping $1 million, an impressive feat for any play not named Mary. Figure in that All In isn’t really a play at all, but a collection of readings by the short comic fiction writer Simon Rich and I thought the box office tally seemed something akin to a Christmas miracle.
Then I actually saw All In, and count me among the Rich converts. Directed by the ever nimble Alex Timbers and performed by a rotating cast of four actors – I was lucky to get the truly excellent John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind – the 90-minute All In is a perfect holiday snickerdoodle, a light and tasty snack no less funny for its brevity and lack of splashy production values.

With “Lake George,” Jeffrey Reiner makes his first indie feature as writer-director since the 1990s, following a prolific quarter-century helming small-screen projects. The filmmaker has cited formative viewings of classic film noirs on television as an inspiration, but this twisty tale feels more like the melancholy genre fictions of the late Ross Macdonald — low-key, droll, downbeat yet empathetic tours through labyrinths of disillusioned and corrupted Southern California lives.
While there’s a fair-sized body count here, the path hewn by uneasy allies Shea Whigham and Carrie Coon comes off less as a thriller than a rueful black comedy of errors, with even the most violent characters carrying a certain pathos. It’s a consistently involving effort that should reward discerning viewers amid the flood of flashier year-end titles. Magnet is releasing to limited U.S. theaters and digital platforms on Dec. 6.

Ron Howard Shares His TCM Picks for November, Including ‘A Face in the Crowd’ and ‘Private Benjamin’

It’s been almost 60 years since Ron Howard last played that lovable scamp Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show,” but the Oscar-winning filmmaker still carries the hit television show in his heart to this day. In announcing his TCM Picks for November, Howard began by honoring his TV father, the late Andy Griffith, with the selection of Elia Kazan’s 1957 satire, “A Face in the Crowd.”
“It’s significance has grown tremendously over the decades, both as a distinct piece of cinema and an increasingly relevant social commentary,” Howard said in the video below. “Most personal to me is Andy Griffith’s performance as the central figure, Lonesome Rhodes, an easygoing folk singer who’s transformed by a media producer into a populist figure who’s changing the face of politics.”
Howard goes on to explain how Griffith was the second choice behind Kazan’s regular leading man Marlon Brando,...

Author Mickey Spillane's 'misanthrope' 1940's comic strip detective "Mike Hammer", that spun into a series of novels, TV series and motion pictures, is being developed at Warners as a new franchise of films:
The character of Hammer was created by Spillane, debuting in the 1947 book "I, the Jury", that was adapted into a feature in 1953 and 1982.
Prior to World War II, Spillane was a writer of comic books for Timely (now Marvel) Publications. After the war, he used what would be the plot of "I, the Jury" for a comic book character called 'Mike Danger' that eventually became 'Mike Hammer' in hard cover.
Hammer was a Marine veteran of the 'Battle of Guadalcanal'. As a private investigator he carries a .45 Colt in a shoulder holster under his left arm. His love for his secretary 'Velda' is only outweighed by his willingness to kill a killer.

A Tiny Star Trek: Lower Decks Easter Egg References One Of The Next Generation's Weirdest Characters

The latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," titled "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel," takes place on the Cosmic Duchess, a massive, massive vacation cruise ship that has been outfitted with multiple enclosed, environmentally controlled vacation biomes. The ship includes a ski resort, a beach resort, a tropical river, and a slot machine-encrusted casino. The Duchess looks a lot like Earthship Ark from the short-lived 1973 Harlan Ellison sci-fi series "The Starlost," but it's unlikely anyone will understand that reference.
Early in the episode, Lieutenants Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) enthusiastically read a list of the Duchess' amenities. Mariner notes that they have 240 24-hour spas, an indoor water park, and, perhaps bafflingly, an underwater dry park. No one knows what an underwater dry park is, but they're eager to try. Boimler also notes that one of the space casinos has a bunch of Dixon Hill slot machines.

The late Jedi has asked him to complete a mission he was unable to on a distant planet. 12 years after his role as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, Humphrey Bogart starred in Beat the Devil, an underrated parody of the 1941 classic. Directed by John Huston, The Maltese Falcon has a well-earned reputation as one of Humphrey Bogart's best movies. It's arguably his second most well-known film, behind Casablanca. It was also one of the movies that helped make the actor a household name in Hollywood, as many of Bogart's movies in the 1930s actually contributed little to his recognition in the industry.
A great example of the film noir genre, The Maltese Falcon famously saw Bogart's interpretation of the Sam Spade character investigate the death of his partner in the private detective business and get embroiled in the search for a highly coveted bird statue. The murder mystery culminated in an ending quite unlike those of most Hollywood films at the time, as it implicated Mary Astor's Brigid O'Shaughnessy,...

Jo Nesbø adaptation Killer Heat is the latest in a long line of detective films, from Chinatown and The Long Goodbye to the Knives Out series
The private detective film will always be the slinkiest and sexiest of thriller subgenres – minus the strictures and/or corruption of police procedure, crime-solving can feel as alluringly shadowy and illicit as the crime itself. Relatively few of us have ever encountered, let alone hired, a private eye; far more of us, I’d wager, have at some point entertained the fantasy that we’d be quite good at the job ourselves.
Newly out on Amazon Prime, Philippe Lacôte’s Killer Heat isn’t exactly a classic entry in the Pi canon. Based on a Jo Nesbø short story and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a moody detective investigating a sordid love triangle involving twin brothers (Richard Madden and Richard Madden) against attractive Greek island scenery,...

Monsieur Spade is the latest in a long line of works that feature the iconic film noir detective Samuel Spade. Like all great works of mystery fiction, the writings that feature Spade use many of the noir genre film tropes, but they were the projects originating these tropes that are now well-known. Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for movies to adapt the stories of Sam Spade, bringing them to audiences everywhere. While many actors have taken on the role, only a few have defined it, and their legacies have been intertwined with that of Spade himself.
Dashiell Hammett's 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon, is the source material that inspired the many iterations of Samuel Spade and was one of the few stories that Hammett wrote about the character. Although the series was already a critical success upon its release on AMC, the Netflix release of Monsieur Spade has put the show in front of even more eyes, with it standing out among the many AMC shows that were added to Netflix. However, many fans don't realize just how risky Monsieur Spade was.

In Monsieur Spade, Clive Owen plays Sam Spade the private detective at the heart of 1941's The Maltese Falcon but the AMC series isn't the actor's only contemporary noir series that's worth watching. A few months before Monsieur Spade's premiere, Owen appeared in Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's A Murder at the End of the World, a psychological thriller that sees the actor in a much different, though equally compelling, role. Seemingly, Monsieur Spade, the stealth Maltese Falcon sequel, might have made a bigger splash for the actor, especially since he's tasked with channeling Hollywood icon Humphrey Bogart.
Like any good continuation, Monsieur Spade reveals what happened after Maltese Falcon, with Owen's version of the private detective relocating to an estate in rural France. Although Spade is eager to enjoy his retirement, the brutal murder of six nuns at a local convent pulls Sam back into the murder-mystery game.

With AMC's Monsieur Spade being a sequel to the classic film noir The Maltese Falcon, audiences and soon-to-be viewers alike are wondering how Clive Owen's older version of Sam Spade compares to Humphrey Bogart's iconic character. Created by Scott Frank (Out of Sight) and Tom Fontana (The Jury), Monsieur Spade stars Clive Owen (Children of Men) as the private detective who rose to pop-cultural prominence with 1941's The Maltese Falcon. Although Monsieur Spade is a sequel to The Maltese Falcon, both projects are also based on Dashiell Hammett's 1930 novel, which first became a film in 1931.
Full of twists and turns, John Huston's black-and-white noir sees Spade navigating the streets of San Francisco, as well as the many parties who are out to claim the titular jewel-encrusted bird statue. Monsieur Spade picks up with Sam further down the timeline in 1963, which is roughly 20 years after The Maltese Falcon.

Humphrey Bogart's last western, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," is hailed as his best, and a terrific cinematic study of greed and paranoia. Monsieur Spade takes place 20 years after The Maltese Falcon, with Clive Owen portraying an older Sam Spade. Sam Spade's post-Maltese Falcon life includes marriage, widowhood, and retirement before a new mystery arises. The show is a clever neo-noir series based on Dashiell Hammett's works, set in France with a murderous twist.
Monsieur Spade follows the later years of Sam Spade, one of Humphrey Bogart's most memorable characters and the hero of The Maltese Falcon. Monsieur Spade is one of a collection of AMC shows now available to stream on Netflix as part of a one-year licensing deal between the network and the streamer — a deal that’s become somewhat of a tradition ever since Breaking Bad surged in popularity once it became available on Netflix. The Clive Owen-led noir drama offers a new story in the infamous onscreen life of Sam Spade, the detective made famous in Dashiell Hammett’s books and in Humphrey Bogart‘s performance in The Maltese Falcon. It’s a gorgeously rendered gumshoe mystery that shows a new side of the character. Set in the south of France in the 1963, Spade is a man in relatively peaceful retirement who’s living quietly after the death of his wife, whom he met in France while tasked with seeing to the safe passage of a young girl named Teresa (the elder...

Monsieur Spade, now streaming on Netflix, is a fresh take on a classic character, connecting back to Humphrey Bogart's iconic portrayal of Sam Spade. With a strong cast led by Clive Owen and references to the original 1941 film, Monsieur Spade is a fitting successor to The Maltese Falcon. After 83 years, Monsieur Spade finally reveals what happens to Sam Spade after the events of The Maltese Falcon, providing some closure.
Arriving nearly a century after Humphrey Bogarts classic noir The Maltese Falcon, Netflix is the new streaming home for AMCs Monsieur Spade, documenting another grim investigation by Detective Sam Spade. The Maltese Falcon is often considered among the greatest movies of all time, having been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar while currently holding a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) is your dad’s ideal protagonist. His happy place is his front yard, with his butt wearing a groove in an Adirondack chair and a local beer keeping his hand from overheating. That his lawn faces the ocean is a nice bonus, and that his endless blue view is being impeded by a monstrous yellow mansion next door, well, that’s his primary complaint. You see, Yancy doesn’t need much. A view, a drink, and a comfy spot to appreciate them both — that’s bliss. But, aside from the hideous remodel going on next door, Yancy’s stress stems from a love/hate relationship with his job. On the one hand, being a detective feeds his ingrained need for justice — he just wants things to be fair, for everyone to get along, and for those who get in the way of the world’s good...

A good cop movie needs a protagonist who is compelling and easy to support. Not all actors have the right style or appearance to play cops and detectives. Great actors have helped to create iconic movie detectives, including Jake Gittes and Sam Spade.
Some actors are better suited to playing cops and detectives than others, and they often appear in tons of movies playing similar characters. Dating all the way back to the film noir era, crime movies have revolved around detectives, with the biggest stars always being drawn to such roles. Actors need a certain style and authority to play law enforcement, and those who have it can add variations to keep their cop movies fresh.

Clive Owen has not forgotten his roots. Growing up in a working-class family in Coventry in the 1970s U.K., he yearned to explore different roles in life — and the youth wing of the city’s civic Belgrade Theatre gave him that opportunity.
More than four decades later, Owen — who most recently appeared in “Monsieur Spade” as an aging Sam Spade drawn back into the game to solve a post-World War II murder mystery in the south of France — credits that experience as the foundation for his career.
“That is where it all started for me — joining the youth theater was a life changer for me,” he tells Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he receives the President’s Award Saturday night. “The city is still a very tough one, and places like the youth theater are a lifeline for kids like me to...

Dead Reckoning, starring Bogart, echoes the intrigue and romance of The Maltese Falcon in a lesser-known film from the 50s. A planned sequel to The Maltese Falcon never materialized, but Dead Reckoning offers a similar mystery and captivating Bogart performance. While Dead Reckoning may not reach Falcon's legendary status, its charm and Bogart's charisma make it a hidden gem worth watching.
For those who enjoyed The Maltese Falcon, a lesser-known Humphrey Bogart film from the 1950s makes for the perfect viewing experience. While The Maltese Falcon may not have the same level of recognition as Casablanca, it's still commonly regarded as one of Humphrey Bogart's best movies - and for good reason. This notion is well-supported by its accolades, which include an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
There was reportedly an intention at one point for Warner Bros. to follow up the success of The Maltese Falcon with a sequel.

John Huston's "The Maltese Falcon" opens with an unsolved mystery. The introductory text talks about a prized statuette of a falcon encrusted in rare jewels — a gift from the Knights Templar to Spain's Charles V — which was stolen by pirates and lost to history for years. After a string of murders and attempts to swipe a black bird statuette occur, private investigator Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) is compelled to crack a mind-boggling case involving rogues with their eyes on the prized artifact. This bird statue, dubbed the Maltese Falcon, has since evolved into an unforgettable MacGuffin, where the value of the actual prop skyrocketed over the years, changing several hands while being sold at auctions at exorbitant prices.
According to Vanity Fair's 2016 Hollywood issue, the last-known auction for the falcon was held in 2013, where the official bidding kept soaring until it hit the $3 million mark and was sold for $3.5 million.

Every actor has a few films that might not have performed as well as they wanted, including blockbuster star Denzel Washington. But one box-office disappointment was different from the others, as it may have been a direct result of the O.J. Simpson verdict.
How the O.J. Simpson trial might’ve affected ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ Denzel Washington | Miikka Skaffari/FilmMagic
Devil in a Blue Dress saw Oscar-winner Washington play Easy Rawlins, a private detective investigating a missing woman. The 1995 movie was based on a series of books that Washington and the film’s director Carl Franklin were interested in at the time. The fact that the film was about a black investigator in the 1940s added another layer to Franklin’s noir film for him to play with.
“It gives you another obstacle,” Franklin said in an interview with Slate. “Of course, obstacles are the key to drama.

Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

The new Apple TV+ series “Sugar” isn’t shy about announcing its influences: It’s steeped in the traditions of film noir.
Creator Mark Protosevich leaned into the tropes of detective stories by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett when creating private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell), who himself is obsessed with classic Hollywood film noirs. Director Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and editor Fernando Stutz went so far as to edit in clips from those classic films, drawing parallels between Sugar’s investigation into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler) to Humphrey Bogart’s spin as Phillip Marlowe in “The Big Sleep.”

Private Investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell) wears a black suit for all occasions and never drives anything but his classic Corvette. He’s unflappably calm, prefers to listen rather than talk, and absolutely doesn’t know how to let a case go once he’s started working on it—especially if it involves a missing woman. Watching Sugar, it’s as if one of Humphrey Bogart or Glenn Ford’s hardboiled gumshoes stepped straight out of their smoky, monochrome realm and into our full-color world of smartphones and social media.
Though Sugar is set in modern-day L.A., the series finds him tasked with a case suited to his anachronistic sensibilities. In fact, it’s one cribbed straight from The Big Sleep: A rich, reclusive movie producer, Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), hires Sugar to track down his wild-child granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). After weeks of moving through scuzzy bars with off-beat cybernetic accouterment, toiling under a static-grey sky to gain control of cyberspace, our heroes have made it to Zion. The Rastafarians who greet these travelers from a ship named for an important historical figure pay little mind to our male protagonist. However, they cannot believe their luck in meeting his female companion, whose reputation far exceeds his.
Regardless of the chilly reception, the protagonist remains undeterred. Zion is, after all, a key part in mission to understand a powerful AI controlling reality.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the above description comes form The Matrix, the groundbreaking sci-fi action movie from 1999 or its sequels. The city of Split has long been a tourist magnet, famous for the churches and flagstones of its picturesque Old Town, and for the beauty of the rocky, sparkling Croatian coastline. But not all visitors come for the culture. Some seek the trashier pleasures of rowdy bars and cheap drinks, and all they know of the area’s history is that the spectacular medieval fortress clinging to a nearby cliffside was a “Game of Thrones” location.

Was Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 6 the end of the story, or just the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the venerable detective?
With the superb cast, masterful writing, and one of the few times that viewers and critics connect, it's hard not to imagine everyone involved hoping this was only the first chapter of a new book about Sam Spade and his exploits in Bozouls.
Of course, it would be odd to have so much happen in the quaint town, but even during the finale, it was noted that it's not so quaint after all.
If you're not a fan of tales being tied up with exposition, you may have been disappointed in Monsieur Spade's final hour.
But if you've been enjoying the banter filling the canyons of Bozouls, then it hit the mark.
This was a highly stylized finale.

We are still not much closer to the full picture of the boy and how his mere presence has created such an uproar in Bozouls, but Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 4 began fleshing it out in some detail.
There are many layers to this entertaining mystery, and as one is peeled away, another is revealed.
The past and present are intricately reliant, and the more we know about one, the more we'll know about the other.
The previews for Monsieur Spade had already hinted at Sam's turn at being a badass, but watching him in action, questioning his attacker with amazing physical prowess without ever leaving his chair, was a treat.
That scene spoke directly to Spade's capabilities and what makes him such a formidable enemy and detective. Even after almost losing his life in a chokehold, he's ridiculously calm and in control.
Filming scenes like that must be a hoot.
