Elle Fanning ("Super 8"), Olivia Cooke ("Ouija") and Lola Kirke ("Mistress America") are said to be the top contenders for the female lead in Steven Spielberg's upcoming adaptation of Ernie Cline's "Ready Player One" at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The story follows a teenager named Wade Watts who becomes immersed in a virtual reality world known as Oasis which enables users to live out their dream lives. When the game's creator suddenly dies, Wade enters an elaborate treasure hunt, where the winner will take control of the entire company.
The teenager soon finds himself up against corporate entities who will do anything to take over the company. Various 1980s pop culture references feature heavily in the work and are expected to be carried over to the film.
