Mike Henderson, a founding member of the bluegrass band the SteelDrivers and a frequent co-writer of Chris Stapleton’s, died Friday. He was 70. Henderson’s former bandmates in the SteelDrivers confirmed his death in a Facebook post.
“All the SteelDrivers, past and present, are in shock today as we have lost our original architect,” they wrote.
Henderson, a Missouri native, won a Grammy for Best Country Song for co-writing “Broken Halos” with Stapleton, his onetime bandmate in the SteelDrivers. In 2017, “Broken Halos” became Stapleton’s first Number One country hit,...

Eric Church and Chris Stapleton are on top, tied with five nominations apiece. Stapleton is actually nominated in the exact same five categories: Entertainer and Male Vocalist, plus Album for “Starting Over,” and Single and Song for the title track. Just a few months after the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards were delayed to last September due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 nominees have been announced. Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton lead with six nominations each. They’re followed by Miranda Lambert with five and Ashley McBryde and Thomas Rhett with four. Though those women earned multiple noms, there are zero women up for Entertainer of the Year, which at this point isn’t too surprising for the ACMs. Scroll down for the complete list of nominees, and find out who wins when the awards are handed out on April 18.

Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton emerged as the leading nominees with six each when the nominations for the 56th Academy of Country Music Awards were announced Friday morning.
Morris’ strong showing is due in part to the success of her song “The Bones,” which landed her nominations for Single of the Year and Song of the Year (Morris co-wrote the crossover hit). As an artist, she’s up for Female Artist of the Year and, as a member of the Highwomen, for Group of the Year.

Chris Stapleton is headed somewhere in his new song “Starting Over.” Over a brushed snare rhythm by drummer Derek Mixon that evokes Willie Nelson’s version of “City of New Orleans” and lyrics about a road rolled out “like a welcome mat,” the country singer is in perpetual motion, his sight set on a better horizon.
Written by Stapleton and his longtime collaborator Mike Henderson (his former bandmate in the SteelDrivers), “Starting Over” expands Stapleton’s rustic sound with a key addition: the Hammond B3 organ of Benmont Tench. The...

Humble Bundle is a great way to add some bulk to your digital comics (and games) collection while also doing some good in the world. They offer pay-what-you-want deals that let you divert however much of your purchase you want to charity, and if you spend at certain levels, you get more stuff. Since its inception, they’ve had bundles covering everything from G.I. Joe and Transformers comics to kids books or Top Shelf art books.
The latest bundle covers almost $1600 worth of collected editions from Image Comics, with proceeds being sent to two outstanding charities: the Binc Foundation, the nonprofit helping independent bookstores weather the Covid-related economic downturn; and the Hero Initiative, a nonprofit that helps provide a safety net to comic creators in need. But the question that might jump to mind for an overwhelmed reader is “Is this bundle actually a deal?”

Dead Man Logan #12 Writer: Ed Brisson | Artist: Mike Henderson | Colourist: Nolan Woodard | Letters: Cory Petit
So this is it. The end of the line for Old Man Logan. A character who has been around for some years now in one incarnation or another. when he came into the main Marvel universe as part of ‘Secret Wars’ a few years back I did wonder how much longevity he would have. With X-Men comics being a minefield of continuity and reboots it was never going to work out that the death of Old Man Logan lined up perfectly with young Wolverine’s return from the dead. While Return of Wolverine was a mess and consequently a waste of time considering the events of Powers of X and House of X, the final issue of Old Man Logan is a fitting end to both the series and the character. I think this issue...

This may be the penultimate issue but it continues to deliver in exactly the same way as the previous ten. It is an issue packed with action, drama and humour, just as the story has been throughout. Brisson continues to pay tribute the original Old Man Logan story with nods and winks, as well as adding his own personal touches. All this si done without every detracting from the point or flow of the story. I like how after all this time. Suriving the Wastelands once before, coming to the Marvel 616 and returning to the Wastelands for one final showdown. Everything is connected to Weapon X. Its like Logan’s life coming full circle. After spending a good amount of time in previous issue giving Sabertooth a future make over it is really fun to...

Deadpool is all the rage right now. He’s long been one of Marvel’s most popular comic book characters, and the House of Ideas love to pit him against other heroes. In this case, he’s up against one of Marvel’s many Wolverines, Old Man Logan. It’s a promising premise. Both are semi-antiheroes, both enjoy going at it with impunity, and they even have something of a history. After all, Old Man Logan is an alternate-future version of the Ol’ Canucklehead himself. That means the dynamic is pretty similar to the one shared between Deadpool and Wolverine. Just with a lot more age-related jokes.
Writer Declan Shalvey knows both characters well. He has experience writing Deadpool, and it shows through in every scene. The Merc With A Mouth’s voice is perfectly reproduced, and you can’t help laughing at the wisecracks. What’s more, Shalvey gives...

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has the complete lineup for its Projections section of the 55th New York Film Festival, which will unspool October 6 – 9. The year’s slate is comprised of eight features and eight shorts programs, each designed to present “an international selection of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be.” Each year, the Projections section of the festival seeks out innovative new films told in unique and often experimental new ways, and 2017 seems to be no different.
“Projections is the New York Film Festival’s home for adventurous work, and our 2017 lineup attests to the sheer number and variety of ways in which our most vital artists are exploring the possibilities of cinematic language,” said Dennis Lim, Fslc Director of Programming and one of the curators of Projections. “We’ve extended the program by a day this year,...

This fall, katanas and claws will clash when two of Marvel’s deadliest heroes come together, in a clash you can only imagine! Superstar writer Declan Shalvey (Deadpool, Moon Knight) and fan-favorite artist Mike Henderson (Secret Wars: Battleworld) team up to bring you a regenerative, cranky old X-Man and a regenerative, wacky Merc with the Mouth…in a story so explosive, not even the promise of chimichangas can save the day.
James “Logan” Howlett is after a newly discovered Omega-level mutant. But if you think he’s going to let Deadpool help him, you’re sorely mistaken. Soon after Disney acquired Marvel nearly a decade ago, it became quite noticeable that characters appearing in their movies had begun to take precedence over those who didn’t. Sure, it’s understandable that the likes of Iron Man and Thor be given their due after finding onscreen success, but many of us lamented seeing our favorite mutants being downplayed.
Fortunately, much of that has changed within the past year, most likely because it’s become increasingly hard to overlook the immense popularity of Deadpool and the X-Men. One such endeavor to be spawned from this epiphany is an upcoming crossover co-headlined by some of Fox’s recent box office champions, Deadpool Vs. Old Man Logan.

Our Take: Unless you’re already a fan of either Nailbiter or Hack/Slash, don’t bother with this. If you are, this is still not an essential title; there aren’t any earth-shaking consequences for Nailbiter or Hack/Slash. In fact, the way both stories go, it’s hard not to feel a bit ripped off; Hack/Slash protagonist Cassie Hack ends up right back where she started and Nailbiter himself is being deceptive the whole time so we don’t really learning anything about him either. That said, the storylines are definitely fun and well-written so if you just really enjoy either of these titles, at only...

Curb Stomp #1
Writer: Ryan Ferrier
Artist: Devaki Neogi
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4
Description: Three gangs. Five girls. No way out. Machete Betty leads a small gang of women under the selfappointed task of protecting their home of Old Beach, one of three boroughs surrounding a rich metropolitan city. When Betty takes the life of a rival gang member in an act of self-defense, she sets off a chain reaction of retaliation, gang warfare, and unlikely allies.
Our Take: As much as I wanted this to be a mix of Switchblade Sisters and The Warriors, it doesn’t have the delirious absurdity of the latter or the delicious trashiness of the former. But, like The Warriors, it retains the brazen violence of that cult classic while subtly investing the protagonists with the kind of relative depth that elevated Switchblade Sisters above pure sleaze. Absolutely worth your time if you love crime drama,...

Nailbiter #5
Story by: Joshua Williamson
Art by: Mike Henderson
Publisher: Image Comics
Have you ever tasted blood? Human blood I mean.
With issue 5 of Joshua Williamson’s Nailbiter, we dig deeper into the dark mysteries within Buckaroo, Oregon – adding more pieces of the puzzle and raising far more questions than I fear Williamson can answer with satisfying results. Only time will tell, and we can only hope for the best, but with powerful imagery and a strong, unpredictable story, Nailbiter continues strong: The result is a challenging psychological thriller within a gripping crime procedural.
One Of The Horrible Secrets Of Buckaroo Has Been Revealed! Finch and Crane are hot on the heels of a serial killer loose in Buckaroo, but Finch has finally found what he was looking for and it’s worse than he feared.
Williamson brings the first arc to and end with issue #5. A few plot points are put to rest,...

Finch and Crane go digging for answers, and what they find isn’t pretty. This is sort of an in-between issue in which we as readers learn a few answers, but so many more questions are raised that we are still sitting in limbo. Time to just kick back and enjoy the ride, because even when it’s slow, this comic is good.
We’re treated to a flashback of one of the townspeople, whose brother, a talented and precocious artist, became the Wtf Killer. Raleigh encourages a group of people, apparently all relatives of killers, to find a way to “dig ourselves out of the hole they put is in.” In the present, Finch and Crane are digging when somebody opens fire on them, forcing them into a brief shootout and brawl. The man in the...

Happy Independence Day!
For the rest of the world, Happy USA-Finally-Stopped-Whining Day!
I’m a bit bummed, though, about this week’s comics. You see, besides Big Trouble In Little China’s Eric Powell and The Shadow: Midnight In Moscow’s Howard Chaykin, none of the other artists or writers I’m reviewing in this week’s column are Americans. “But Chris,” you say, “Big Trouble In Little China’s artist, Brian Churilla, is from Portland, as is Nailbiter writer Joshua Williamson, and Portland is a city in the United States of America”
To which I say: have you ever actually been to Portland? Like, visited it, set foot inside it, verified with your own senses that it does indeed exist? Because if you ask me, I think Portland is actually a Canadian city Pretending to be an American city. Frankly, it’s the only explanation that makes any sense.

The body count in Buckaroo is steadily climbing as Finch and Crane try to figure out who is responsible for all of these murders. The series is finding its own darkly amusing voice that sets it apart from a lot of other horror comic books being written today. While we’re no closer to unwrapping the mystery of Buckaroo, this is a really enjoyable book that is taking off.
Not surprisingly after last issue, Warren is in trouble with the locals, and a lynch mob almost manages to hang him before Crane literally drives them off with her car. After taking Warren into protective custody, the two meet with Morty the mortician. The mortician first tells them that the deceased boy’s murder doesn’t match Warren’s Mo. More surprisingly, the body from the motel wasn’t Carroll,...

The Darkness: Close Your Eyes
Written by Ales Kot

The Darkness: Close Your Eyes is a grim and gritty descent into the mind of a murderer
Psychologists and police profilers have been delving into the minds of murderers for years in an attempt to come up with a reason why people kill. Sometimes it’s simple. A woman comes home early from work and finds her husband in bed with her best friend, becomes enraged, and kills them both. Crimes of passion are relatively straight forward. The reasons for murder expressed in The Darkness: Close Your Eyes one-shot are not so simple. For example, the protagonist, while contemplating murder, has no desire to kill.
Within the first few pages of the book, Adelmo Estacado, the protagonist, is shown contemplating his impending twenty-first birthday and the fact that he may not live long enough to see that age.

‘Hp Lovecraft’S From Beyond’ At The Hi-pointe Theatre. Late Nite Grindhouse.
I can’t even tell you how stoked I am for this. One reason you’ve got to see this movie is for a very geek reason; the title credit is done in one of the coolest design schemes I’ve ever seen. You just don’t know how cool it looks until you see it on screen. The other great thing about the movie is that it’s progressive for its genre, with a female protagonist who not only makes other horror movie heroines seem like idiots by comparison but is also not an ice queen either. I really can’t say enough about how much I love this flick. If you’re here in Saint Louis, go see it tonight or tomorrow night! If you’re not, why not join us at home and...

The Bloody Plot Really Takes Off In Nailbiter #2
The last paragraph of the review of Nailbiter #1 says, “No matter what genre this series falls into, it is sure to be a bloody, fun read.” A read-through of the second issue only confirms that as a fact. While there are still elements of a police procedural within the story’s plot, there is now no doubt about the likely gore-fest to come. This is verified within the text when Officer Finch tells the Nailbiter, “This isn’t Silence of the Lambs, murderer. We’re not teaming up.” This seems to be writer Williamson’s way of saying, “This plot isn’t really about catching criminals.”
Other evidence that supports that assumption is the discovery that Finch has a very unique expertise that his missing friend, Carroll, planned to exploit.

Number One Question About Nailbiter #1: Is It Setting Up A Police Procedural Or A Horror Series?
Nailbiter #1 is a conundrum. The reader is presented with a small town in Oregon, Buckaroo, which is the birthplace of no less than sixteen of the world’s most notorious serial killers and which is under investigation by an Army Intelligence officer who seems to be suffering from a psychotic breakdown of his own. One of the killers, the book’s namesake – The Nailbiter – was recently acquitted and has returned to his hometown. The intelligence officer’s good friend and fellow investigator has gone missing while digging around in Buckaroo, looking for some kind of connection which could shed light on why this small town could spawn so many murderers. Obviously, there is a mystery at the center of the plot.

Sneak Peek Marvel's "Once Upon A Time" graphic novel, illustrated by Nimit Malaia, available September 4, 2013, following the events of the Season 1 episode "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter".
"We wanted to explore some new narrative territory that the show hadn't fully covered yet," said Marvel Comics' editor Emily Shaw. "'The Huntsman' was perfect. Fans love him, he's such a compelling character, but his background is still pretty mysterious. Especially when it comes to his servitude to 'Regina', the 'Evil Queen'."
The comic book story was developed by Dan Thomsen, co-producer of the Vancouver-lensed fantasy TV series and co-written by Corinna Bechko. Besides Malavia, illustrations are by Vasilis Lolos, Mike Del Mundo and Mike Henderson.
"Shadow of the Queen" is set in 'Fairy Tale Land', with 'The Queen' taking the 'Huntsman' prisoner after he let 'Snow White' escape rather than kill her, as Regina requested. "The Evil Queen is still...

Or at least, that’s what I’ve decided this week will be, here in my column. And it’s my column, so as Loki would say (and I am fond of quoting), “I do what I want!” Mwahaha! Seriously, though – I have a lot of fantastically talented friends, and it just so happens that two of them are currently involved in fun Kickstarters that I think are deserving of attention. So without further ado, here they are: 1) Stage Production of Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters: Anybody who knows me probably knows that I’m a huge fan of Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series. What you might not know (even if you’re a Discworld fan) is that over nineteen of Terry’s books have been adapted to the stage since 1991 by the Audie Award-winning voice actor and Discworld collaborator Stephen Briggs, who has also voiced a large number of the Discworld audiobooks.

The connections between Marvel Comics and its sister divisions within Walt Disney continue to evolve. After the success of graphic novels tying in the quasi-related genre of ABC’s Castle, now the company is about to launch a graphic novel based on another ABC property, Once Upon a Time. It’s fully expected that in 2015, Marvel will once more publish Star Wars comics as the relationship between Lucasfilm, now a Disney vassal, and Dark Horse, comes to a conclusion. Should this continue, we can expect a continuing line of comics tied to other Disney properties, both film and television.

I really wanted to break my link posting hiatus on its traditional Sunday yesterday, but a technical crisis prevented me from doing so. But, here we are:
The other reason I only wanted to come out of hiatus was to share this brilliant article by donna k. giving advice to young filmmakers. I was particularly taken with her 3rd note regarding asking oneself the ever important question “Why make this film?” That’s something I’ve come across on my own as a paid screener for a festival, too, but also checking out the films submitted to Bad Lit via email. When a film doesn’t work, the first question I typically ask myself is: “Why did that person even bother?” And I usually assume the answer is just to regurgitate other shit seen in our culture. So, please take Donna’s advice: Be introspective, thoughtful and have a Pov.
