Flix FlashbackUnlike the average murder mystery where the question is who did it, the puzzle in 'Drishyam' is how did he do it. Sowmya RajendranMainstream cinema, a medium for popular culture, is often looked down upon by intellectuals who consider it to be a lowly art. But for George Kutty of Drishyam, brilliantly played by Mohanlal, cinema is his teacher. From the scores of films, language no bar, that he has greedily digested, George Kutty learns everything about life — from romance and sleaze to psychology, forensics and police procedure. It seems to be a wasteful hobby, especially to his wife Rani (Meena), who never loses an opportunity to remind him that he's studied only up to fourth standard. But when George Kutty's family comes under siege unexpectedly, it is cinema which becomes their greatest weapon. Jeethu Joseph's 2013 film opens with a languid bus ride as the credits roll.

No long stretches of monologues that end with slow-motion walk-aways. He plays instead an Nri man in trouble with his wife, thrown out of the house because of something he did. His job at a funeral company in London brings him in touch with a big Malayali family where a death has occurred. While you can, if you try, pick out a few, really few,...

TollywoodAs the feisty Rama Lakshmi, Samantha proves that she isn’t going to disappear or be relegated to ‘sister’ roles anytime soon. Sowmya RajendranWhen Samantha and Naga Chaitanya announced their decision to get married last year, Samantha said that film offers suddenly began to dry up. Among the top ranked heroines in the Telugu and Tamil film industries today, Samantha made it clear that she wasn’t calling it quits only because she’d made an important decision in her personal life. With Rangasthalam, the actor has sent out a strong message that not only is she here to stay, she isn’t going to be relegated to the ‘sister’ and ‘mother’ roles anytime soon. Directed by Sukumar, the Telugu film, which is set in the ‘80s and stars Ram Charan and Samantha in lead roles, has gone on to become a blockbuster. The long-held assumption that the audience cannot accept a married woman playing another man's heroine on screen has been rubbished, with Samantha's character winning favour with viewers. Unlike most mainstream Telugu films which barely have a role for the heroine, Samantha in Rangasthalam plays a feisty Rama Lakshmi who doesn’t disappear after a song and dance routine. One can ask why our filmmakers continue to cast fair-skinned women with tan make-up in such roles, instead of selecting someone who looks the part – but that’s a debate for another day. When Rama Lakshmi spots Chitti Babu (Ram Charan) ogling her as she works in the fields, she has no qualms about taking off her half-saree and asking him what he’s looking at. The scene description might sound sleazy but the effect of it is not – Samantha’s stride and confident body language ensure that she’s in control of what’s happening. An actor who is mostly known for playing “glamorous” roles (a pity, considering she has proved that she can perform with films like Eega), Samantha has more to do in Rangasthalam than make cutesy faces. The scene when she hands a bigger bottle of poison to her father, who threatens to commit suicide if she walks out of her wedding, is among the best moments in the film. Interestingly, Rangasthalam was launched by Chiranjeevi, veteran actor and Ram Charan’s father, in February 2017, soon after Samantha and Naga Chaitanya got engaged the previous month. Usually, a woman actor’s commitment to marriage would sound the death knell for her career. This is especially true in the south Indian film industries where very few women actors since the ‘80s have continued to act in lead roles after marriage, unlike a Savitri or Kr Vijaya. You can count the names like Rima Kallingal, Asha Sharath and Amala Paul (who later divorced) on your fingers. Most times, heroines decide to get married at the fag end of their career or quit if they happen to be at their peak. A few like Jyothika and Manju Warrier have since made successful comebacks after a long break. None of Samantha’s contemporaries and competitors in the Tamil and Telugu industries like Anushka Shetty, Nayanthara, Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Aggarwal, Regina Cassandra, Nithya Menen and Tamannaah are married. Shriya Saran, who isn’t quite in the same league as Samantha any more, is the only exception. Most male actors who play the lead, on the other hand, are married and this isn’t surprising, considering that their marital status has never had an impact on film offers or salary. Things have changed in Bollywood where stars like Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Radhika Apte and others have not let their marital status dictate their hold over the box office. With Rangasthalam and a host of upcoming films, Samantha may well establish the tradition in the south, too.

TollywoodAnushka is awesome and delivers a power-packed performance but the second half of the film doesn't hold up.Sowmya RajendranDirector G Ashok reportedly waited for five years so Anushka Shetty could do Bhaagamathie. And you can see why. There is no woman actor in the south who has the kind of commanding presence that Anushka does. When she's on screen, there's no one else you want to watch. I suppose if I ever met her in person, I'd hear imaginary elephants trumpeting around me because she gets under the skin of these regal roles so convincingly. The trailer for Bhaagamathie had set the expectation that the film would be along the lines of Arundhati, the 2009 horror thriller, which established Anushka Shetty, the performer. But Ashok uses that very expectation to pull the carpet from under your feet. The film opens with an intriguing sequence that shows a village under attack from some powerful evil. And then, we meet Chanchala Ias (Anushka), who is in remand because of a murder. From there on, the film moves to an abandoned bungalow, the tired trope of every Indian horror film. But if you've followed the film's promos, you'd know that it isn't any ordinary ghost's bungalow, it's Bhaagamathie's (sorry, I cannot help but get carried away by how Anushka makes that declaration). Chanchala and Vaishnavi (Asha Sharath in a tailormade role as Cbi director), play mind games with each other and the scenes remind one of what the latter did in the Malayalam Drishyam (remade in Telugu as Drushyam). Ashok also seems to have taken inspiration from the Malayalam classic Manichitrathaazhu, which was later remade in several languages. The film sets up the creeps well initially. There's also the suspense of why someone as upright as Chanchala would have committed a murder. But after a point, the tried and tested boo moments become repetitive. However, just as you start feeling restless, there comes that terrific scene right before the interval which has the audience going crazy. This is the moment that the crowd has been waiting for all along and, boy, do they lap it up! Anushka alternates between playing the gentle Chanchala and the vengeful Bhaagamathie with ease. This is an actor who can pull off stereotypical depictions of femininity without it grating on your nerves — so when she swoons at the sight of blood in one scene, it doesn't put you off because she takes herself seriously and isn't around just as a decorative festoon. In another scene, a character comes up with a back story for Bhaagamathie's rage and when he starts narrating the same-old tale of rape-and-revenge, I was beginning to roll my eyes. But then, so does Anushka's character and I was pleasantly surprised. The brief romance with Shakti (an uneven performance from Unni Mukundan) comes to us in bits and pieces through a non-linear narrative, adding to the suspense. However, the second half of the film proves to be a let-down. It does pack in a few surprises, but the screenplay is bloated and the characters speechify too much. Jayaram, who plays a politician and mentor to Chanchala, makes the best of a poorly written character. We're made to wait for the revelations for too long and when they finally come, it's long-winded and not very convincing. I shall never understand why villains in Indian films go to such great lengths to explain their actions in detail to their victims. Perhaps if we'd seen more of Bhaagamathie (sorry, I can't get over it), we'd have forgotten all the quibbles. Thamman's background score is a constant presence in the film. It's unnecessarily loud and tries to compensate for the visuals which aren't all that scary. You know that delicious fear that makes your spine tingle when there's absolute silence? Bhaagamathie has no use for such moments and it's a pity because the abandoned bungalow set-up lends itself to unsettling you with teeny-tiny noises. Instead, what we get are loud bangs and screeches over a throbbing score. The 'Bhaagamathie' moan, however, is haunting and stays in your mind long after the film. The CGI isn't great – the first visual of an apparition we see is far from impressive. However, the portions when Anushka depicts a possessed woman are convincing. The actor's body language and expressions power these scenes through, making you suspend your disbelief. The camera, alternating between close-up shots and long ones, succeeds in creating a disassociation between Chanchala and Bhagaamathie effectively. Bhaagamathie is Anushka's film all the way and the actor's performance is what ultimately makes us stay till the end to find out what on earth happened in that bungalow – Bhaagamathie's bungalow (all right, I shall stop). Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

CinemaAnushka looks powerful in this thriller film which will release on Republic Day. Tnm StaffThe trailer for Anushka Shetty's Bhaagamathie directed by Ashok G is out. This is Anushka's first release after Baahubali 2 and the actor looks amazingly majestic on screen. To release in Tamil and Telugu, the trailer tells us that Anushka plays an Ias officer who is targeted by powerful people for standing in their way. She is shut inside a huge mansion which appears to be haunted. We also get to see Anushka acting like the ghost or a "possessed" person, dressed majestically and declaring that people cannot come here and go as they please and that it is Bhaagamathie's land. Malayalam actors Unni Mukundan, Asha Sharath, Jayaram are also part of the cast. From the trailer, Unni seems to be Anushka's ally and it's also suggested that the two of them might be in a romantic relationship. Asha Sharath, who is famous for playing the role of a police officer in Drishyam, has been cast as a cop once again. Despite the Cgs which doesn't look all that impressive, Bhaagamathie inspires awe simply because of Anushka's powerful performance. The trailer reminds one of Arundhathi, which centered around Anushka's character and established her as a woman actor who could carry a film entirely on her shoulders. Late in 2017, Nayanthara, south India's highest paid woman actor played an Ias officer in Aramm to critical acclaim and Anushka is following suit with Bhaagamathie although both films are of different genres. SS Thaman's music adds to the suspense in the frames and has got social media excited about the trailer. Bhaagamathie is expected to release on January 26. Watch:...
