This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

As FX’s Mayans M.C. wraps its final season tonight, Deadline has your exclusive look at the penultimate day of filming in Santa Clarita, California.
As the sets were being broken down to make way for a new production in the future, series co-creator Elgin James celebrated Crew Appreciation Day alongside stars J.D. Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Carla Baratta, Emilio Rivera, Sarah Bolger, J.R. Bourne, Edward James Olmos, Gino Vento, Emily Tosta, Andrew Jacobs and Alex Barone. Maverick James who played Maverick Reyes, son of Adelita (Baratta) and Angel (Cardenas), was also part of the celebration as was Baratta’s son Diego who was inside her belly during the show’s second season and was worked into the storyline.
For the festivities, the grounds were colorfully decorated and food trucks were serving the hungry and excited masses. Pardo and Rivera hosted a raffle giving away kuttes from both Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.

FX Mayans M.C. season five episode nine – the series’ penultimate episode – serves up one of the most devastating deaths of its entire run…thus far. No one is safe as Ez continues to wage war with the Sons of Anarchy.
Episode nine, “I Must Go in Now For the Fog is Rising,” begins with Bottles (Alex Barone) and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) silent as they ride back to town in the back of a stranger’s pickup truck. Witnessing the destruction of Santo Padre’s cookhouse at the Broken Saints ranch weighs heavy on their minds as they head back to the clubhouse.
Sofia (Andrea Cortés) wakes and leaves Ez (Jd Pardo) in bed with Sally when suddenly Sally barks in alarm. Ez grabs his gun, responding to pounding on his door.

Still haven’t recovered from FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode seven? Neither have I. But buckle up because episode eight – “Her Blacks Crackle and Drag” – doesn’t let up. The episode finds the Mayans saying goodbye to Creeper, Angel lost without Adelita, and Hope taking drastic measures to ensure Isaac can never hurt her or Letty again.
But, most importantly, the episode’s explosive ending might spell the end of Ez’s short reign over the prisons.
Episode eight opens with Downer (Angel Oquendo) and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) transporting the dead bodies of Diaz and Jinx. Guero’s justifiably worried after killing Oakland’s president in cold blood, which forced Bishop to take out the VP. But Downer assures him the club knows why he did it. It wasn’t a smart move,...

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode seven says goodbye to two major, longtime players as we head into the final stretch of episodes. The body count explodes in episode seven, with Emily finally getting her hands bloody instead of calling on Ez to do her dirty work, and a Santo Padre associate is taken out after being labeled the club’s rat. Plus, Ibarra’s son finally exacts his revenge at the most inopportune time.
But it’s the gut-wrenching deaths of two key Mayans M.C. characters that make episode seven so heartbreaking.
Plenty of spoilers ahead…you’ve been warned!

Angel (Clayton Cardenas) knows half the guards belong to Iron War, and Gilly (Vincent Vargas) believes the attack happened right after he finished visiting with Creeper.
They don’t know Creeper’s condition, but the attack was brutal.
Kate (Stella Maeve) visits Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) at the hospital, where he’s handcuffed and hooked up to machines. Hulu has debuted the trailer for the upcoming docu-series ‘Captive Audience.’
This is the story of how a story gets told, and how the media’s magnifying glass impacts the characters caught in the narrative. Siblings Ashley and Steven Stayner Jr. never knew their famous father Steven, the child victim of a shocking California kidnapping, who tragically died in an accident when they were young. In 1972, seven-year-old Steven went to school – and never came home. His mother Kay struggles to keep the media interested in the case and to hold her family together. Then, after seven years, a miracle: Steven returns. The media can’t get enough of the story and frantically descend on the Stayner home – but this isn’t the Hollywood ending it appears to be.
Now fourteen years old, Steven struggles to adapt, and his family grapples with life under the media microscope. Steven’s older brother...

Ancient myths, religious otherworldliness, and culturally tailored re-imaginings of classic tropes or creatures populate the landscape of Latino horror. Although genre films have been present in Latin American cinema since the 1930s, over the last two decades — with the advent of digital filmmaking and increased government investment in the art form — they have exponentially flourished in the region.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Latinx audiences are known to be enthusiastic (and paying) fans of all things horror, even if Hollywood projects rarely include Latinos on screen. There are still few genre features by or about American Latinos out there, but up-and-coming storytellers are striving to change that. As streamers and studios vow to support emerging voices in entertainment, this is a space ripe for growth.

You may not have heard of Andrew Jacobs yet, but that will likely be changing very shortly. He has the perfect recipe for success in the entertainment industry. He is young, handsome, and very talented. Those three things have all come together nicely for him in his career as an actor. Andrew made his on screen debut in 2014, and by 2020 he’d landed a main role in the second season Netflix series, Trinkets. The role has given him the opportunity to share his skills with a larger audience, and he’s already getting lots of attention. Although he is just

Chicago – Flooding the market with the shaky cam, the growing use of found footage has had more impact on horror than any other genre. Sometimes it’s used to great effect. But more often than not, such films lack the craft needed to propel viewers into the nightmares. “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” and “Devil’s Due” are cases in point.
One fails to take advantage of the solid point-of-view foundation built up by its own franchise. The other only somewhat effectively melds the found-footage technique to a plot involving the birth of the Anti-Christ.

A few days back Paramount invited us to a special junket for the release of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (review) on Blu-ray and DVD. We came back with some interviews and more!
The so-called "spin-off" will hit Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD outlets on April 8th in the wake of its digital release on March 18th. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes an extended unrated version and some new found footage while the DVD boasts only the theatrical cut.
In the film questions are answered, the mythology is taken ten steps further, and when the witches show up, it's for a hell of a lot more than just to say "Boo." This flick delivers on all counts and is not to be missed. It's nothing short of a gift to fans.
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, the film stars Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Richard Cabral, Carlos Pratts, and Eddie J. Fernandez.

Paramount just hit us off with the official trailer for their upcoming home video release of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (review), and we have it for you right here! Check it out!
The so-called "spin-off" will hit Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD outlets on April 8th in the wake of a digital release on March 18th.
Fernandez.

Valentines Day! If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks' godawful movies , chances are you are loving today! You probably think sitting in a champagne shaped glass jacuzzi in the Poconos is romantic (It is anything but). There are people (usually men) who avoid it like the bubonic plague. Anything to get out of buying horrible chocolates last minute or scrambling to make a reservation. The teddy bear with the heart you got her from Rite Aid will let most women know that you truly don't know a thing about her, so the evening will be ruined anyway. And then there are hopeless romantics who live for this hallmark holiday (usually women). You can't wait to have your co-workers ask you what sad sack thing your lover did for you. Being that LatinoBuzz is for lovers we rounded up some of our fave Latino actors to share which characters they are akin to and their most epic wins and fails!
If I could choose any character in any movie that reflects my dating life, as cheesy as this sounds, it would have to be Drew Barrymore from the movie "Going The Distance". Her character and I are a couple of crazy hopeless romantics. I was in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend for a year up until last month, it was sooo hard at times but worth the wait. He finally took the plunge and moved to Los Angeles! A new beginning :). Soooo a few years back I had a huge crush on this one guy, and we went out one night to a karaoke bar with his friends. I wanted to stand out to him so I decided (after a couple of shots of whiskey lol) to jump on stage and sing my heart out! I sang "Girl Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae. I actually sounded pretty damn good! I surprised myself and definitely impressed the guy I liked. I'd say I won that night :) Andrea Sixtos (East Los High)
When I was a little girl I was so shameless and passionate that I didn't care what other people thought of me. I was in love with this guy "Jose" and I used to chase him in kindergarden. I would always tell him that I loved him and that he was supposed to be with me, and even share my lunch with him... I remember that our conversations were always the same... I would say "Jose, who is the prettiest girl in the world?" (hoping that he would say: You!) and he always answered "My sister!" (he had a 6 month new sister). The best part was that I didn't care! I knew that he would realized that it was me. Well... years after I ran in to him as I was going to my ballet classes... he was short, fat and bald.
But the most Epic fail was years later when I was a teenager (not as shameless as I used to be), I had a boyfriend and wanted to tell him that I love him, so I composed a song... and thought for a week if I should sing it for him. I decided to do it... as he heard it, he blushed, told me - thank you - and we never talked about it again... I guess he didn´t like it... But, despite that we were together for 2 more years, happy ending! Francisca Walker (El Verano De Los Peces Voladores)
Although it was originally a musical, I would say that I am a less narcissistic version of Maureen from Rent. We're similar in the way that we are both open spirits, artists, we're strong, passionate, monogamists (considered by some to be serial-daters)... really when it gets down to it we want to be in love, but we won't sacrifice who we are... in other words "take me baby, or leave me." ;) Noemi Gonzalez (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones)
In the Notebook. Too many men, which to choose, love or stability lol. Most Epic fail was trying to give an ex Mexican candies to win him back, his niece got to them before he even saw it. Should have left a card... Gina Rodriguez (Sleeping With The Fishes)
Well, the night I kissed my current girlfriend for the first time, I apparently farted. I was holding her hand and walking her back to her car. I had a couple drinks that night and don't remember this, but she swears by it! It must've worked because we've been together for nearly 4 years! I think that should be the test: fart around the person. Depending on how they react, one could decide whether she is a keeper or not. She didn't mind it too much, so I guess she was a keeper, and vice versa! She just also happens to be the most loving and accepting person I've ever met, so... :) Jorge Diaz (33)
I think my dating life is like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City. She casually dates but when she's in a relationship, she's In a relationship. Plus she ends up with Mr.Big! Who wouldn't want to end up with their one true love!?!?! Chelsea Rendon (McFarland)
My Junior year in High School our English Literature teacher had us move desks around every couple of months to mix things up. From the classic row and column formation, to a giant inward facing circle and back again. We would physically get up and push our desks, which blanketed the room in cacophony for about 5 minutes. I had a crush on a boy in class and though I'm not sure where I got the gall, I slammed my hands down on his desk and shoved it up against him so he was pinned in his seat. The look on his face was priceless and in that moment I, too, was a little shocked (and stoked) by my prowess. Though I didn't say a word to him that day, he ended up being my first boyfriend. I have some epic fails too but we can save those for another day. Alexandra Metz (Once Upon A Time)
I would have to say the character that most represents my dating life is Jane from 27 Dresses. I've witnessed so many of my family members and friends tie the knot in just the last few years. If I had a dime for every one I might be able to buy a coffee. Regular of course, nothing fancy. Seriously though, I love the meaning of marriage and weddings. I think everything about them is so beautiful. I'm a sucker for romance and a great love story. As for myself, I don't really date. I'm always helping and taking care of other people that I tend to forget about myself. Similar to Jane, who puts everyone else first and thinks she has no time for herself. Janine Larina (East Los High)
Oh, son. Let me tell ya, I have a very Very epic fail to share. I was at a house party in college, wearing heels, and dressed to impress a certain cutie that lived at the house we were at. It was my first time ever meeting him, and as I sashayed down the stairs my heel got caught in a tear in the carpet and I went flying down the stairs Face First! I landed flat on my face at the bottom of the stairs and the entire party took a collective Gasp. Once I realized that I hadn't actually died from the fall (or the embarrassment), I remarkably got back on my feet with some help from nearby strangers, brushed myself off, and continued to laugh and dance like nothing had happened. When the sobering light of the next day came however, I was so embarrassed that I did everything I could to avoid my crush for the rest of the year until he graduated. Come to find out, Years later when we reconnected, that he was actually pretty impressed with how easily I laughed off the epic fall down the stairs, thought I was a cool chick, but didn't know my name or how to find me. Lesson learned: Best way to recover from an Epic Fail is to laugh it off!! And don't waste your energy being embarrassed by it - because you never know how other people perceived it. An epic fail could always turn into an epic Win when you least expect it. ;-) Marisa Quinn (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2)
This one qualifies as the best fail - win ever so I have to tell. It was my birthday and he set up the most amazing night. Dressed up, special pick up, flowers, gifts, private room at the restaurant the whole deal! After the most amazing meal I still have ever had in my life, he has cupcakes with candles come out and he sings happy birthday. It was the one most romantic night I've ever had. I blow off the candles and he insists I have a bite. I dragged my finger through the icing and tried to put it on his nose being all cute and romantic like I see in those romantic wedding movies. But I was a little tipsy from the bottle of Moet we had just had and stuck the icing straight into his eye. It was so much of it he couldn't even open it! My God did that go wrong. I was so worried iI blinded him and not sure what reaction to expect. But he just laughed so hard that it made me laugh. Soon we were both on the floor out of breath trying to un-stick his eye. It was the best moment of the night. Even as we remember the story now we still giggle like little children. I never looked at a cupcake the same way again. Luciana Faulhaber (The Night Crew)
About two years ago when I first moved to Los Angeles I starter to dance with fire. So one night, after spending a beautiful day with this very special person, I invited my super talented fire dancers friends to come to my house and we performed for him. It was the best performance I've ever done and he was pleasantly surprised. Paola Baldion (Sin OtoÑO Sin Primavera)
I had a crush on a sports trainer in college and thinking I was pretty athletic myself, I thought I could impress him with my prowess. So I decided to join his 5:30 Am bootcamp. Basically, everything was going according to plan, Until one day I had the bright idea to go one morning when I was clearly still feeling a bit funny from the night/earlier that morning... and he made a work out circuit, called the "gut check," let's just say, I checked it...and threw up, A Lot... and never went back. Lindsey Morgan (The Hundred)
I was on a date with a girl when I was 13 during Halloween and went to a maze, I'm petrified of scary clowns and sure enough the end of the maze it was clowns, luckily she was scared also so we ran out with eachother. She dropped her phone while running and asked if I could go get it and she asked if I was scared, trying to be cool I said no. So walking back in, one of the clowns was holding the phone and I was holding my breath, and as soon as I grabbed it the clown screams on the top of his lungs and I peed myself. She wouldn't stop laughing at me. Andrew Jacobs (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona. 'Cause we all been in there and it's weird at times when they just broke up with their exes. There is that tension and if its too recent its worse. Fernanda Romero (Ghost Team One)...

The fifth film in the found footage franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones takes its arc of supernatural shenanigans to Oxnard, CA, where teens Jesse (Andrew Jacobs), Hector (Jorge Diaz), and Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh) encounter strange forces in their apartment complex. It is written and directed by Christopher Landon, who previously wrote Disturbia and three Paranormal Activity movies.
The film stands as the acting debut of Jacobs, who can also be seen performing as a street dancer in Los Angeles. Diaz has acted previously, having appeared in films like Filly Brown, TV shows like “True Blood,” “Boston Public,” and video games “Grand Theft Auto V” and “Dead Rising 3.”
Speaking with the guys a week after the film opened, we talked about not putting the camera down, the demand for more Hispanic characters in movies, what Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones has to say about Martin Scorsese’s recent words, and more.

During Paramount’s recent press day for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Daily Dead had the opportunity to sit down and chat with the film’s trio of stars- Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz and Gabrielle Walsh- as well as writer/director Christopher Landon about their experiences working on the latest entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
During the roundtable interviews, we heard more about Landon’s experience stepping behind the camera and finding the stars for The Marked Ones and the cast chatted about the challenges of working on a found footage movie, some of the scenes that didn’t make it into the final version of the film (including a different ending) and more.
You’ve been involved with this series since Paranormal Activity 2. How was it for you to get to step behind the camera this time for a Paranormal Activity movie and direct in addition to writing?...

Normally a film’s junket is before the release, sometimes weeks before but that wasn’t the case for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
The story begins in June 2012 in Oxnard, California. Recent high school graduate Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) has a party which includes his family and friends to celebrate his graduation. After days of humorous stunts, Jesse finds a bite on his arm. Days later, he and his friend Hector (Jorge Diaz) are confronted by two thugs who attack them, but the thugs are somehow knocked out. When they show the incident to their other friend Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh), Jesse cannot remember how it happened. After a few days of strange activity, he finds that he has superhuman abilities before he tests and plays with them.

With Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the long running horror franchise succeeds in making a rebound after the disappointment that was Paranormal Activity 4. Not so much a sequel as it is a spin-off, the film takes a different approach to the series by focusing on a working class Latino family that lives in an apartment complex when that haunting we’ve all become familiar with in these movies starts up again. It also has an ending which succeeds in putting the entire Paranormal Activity franchise on its head, and you have to see it to believe it.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones tells the story of Jesse (Andrew Jacobs), a recent high school graduate who, along with his friends Hector (Jorge Diaz) and Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh), start to investigate strange occurrences in their building when their downstairs neighbor ends up dying under mysterious circumstances. It.s unusual to cover a film.s junket after the release, yet that is exactly what happened for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. What was interesting about the experience was to hear how the actors involved felt when the saw the new film with a paying audience. Suffice it to say I had an absolute blast chatting with Jorge Diaz, Andrew Jacobs and Gabrielle Walsh who all face some demonic badness and crazy cult women in the new spin off/sequel. Talking to these three actors was a real...

Recently we had a chance to sit down with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (review) director Christopher Landon to get the scoop on what went into his process of making the latest entry in the highly successful juggernaut franchise. Read on!
"The support of the horror community is essential," says Landon of films like Paranormal Activity and lower budget features in general. "I'm a horror fanatic and I've been going on websites forever. You really have to satisfy your base before you can worry about anything or anyone else."
"At the end of the day, you can throw as many millions in advertising at a project as you want, but it's word of mouth that really gets people excited. The success of the first movie especially was a result of the kind of support that the websites gave it."

Disney's animated Frozen has done what very few films are capable of pulling off as the animated family adventure topped the box office in its not sophomore or even fourth weekend trial, but seventh weekend run. The film frontlined by Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Alan Tudyk and Ciarán Hinds and grossed $20.7 million from 3,318 theaters (down by 17), averaging $6,425 per theater. That's just a 28% change compared to last weekend's gross as the film marches towards $300 million domestically with over $297.8 million coined thus far. In second, Paramount Pictures' Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones scared up a decent $18.2 million, averaging $6,348 from 2,867 theaters. Christopher Landon directs and wrote the screenplay for the film which stars Andrew Jacobs, Molly Ephraim, Richard Cabral, Jorge Diaz, Jessica Tyler Brown and Eddie J. Fernandez. Expect this one to fall of the charts rapidly, as do most horrors, especially ones out of the Halloween frame.

My preferred way of opening a review of a sequel is to quickly run through the whole franchise, just to bring us all to to speed and perhaps offer some perspective in regard to the latest chapter. But at this point the Paranormal Activity quartet just sort of congeals together into a blob that feels like Part 1 (with a lamer ending than I saw) followed by three similar films that all have their moments of creepiness, cleverness, creativity ... and talking. Lots and lots of talking. But what comes next after Paranormal Activity (2007), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), and Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)? Why, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, of course. A franchise isn't a franchise these days unless it's spewing out sequels *and* spinoffs.
But the movie is what matters, obviously, and if Blumhouse/Paramount want to keep giving me another "found footage" ghost story every year (this year we'll...

Title: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Directed By: Christopher Landon Starring: Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Gabrielle Walsh, Gloria Sandoval, Carlos Pratts, Richard Cabral “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” isn’t half as scary as three of its four predecessors, but its strong characters and clever story layers do prove the mythology is worth expanding. “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” kicks off at Jesse’s (Andrew Jacobs) high school graduation. After the festivities wrap up, Jesse talks his way into holding on to the family camcorder and uses it to spy on his creepy neighbor, Anna (Gloria Sandoval). It’s all harmless fun until Anna is murdered and Jesse gets the bright idea to [ Read More ]

By the time Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones comes to a close it's a little maddening that, once again, very little that could be considered "new" is brought to the table. This is merely the same scares with a new family and a little bit of Chronicle thrown in to stir things up. The intention with each one of the installments in the Paranormal Activity franchise, following the first film in 2009, seems to be an attempt to add one little piece of information to the mythology, hoping it keeps people interested before the next one arrives. Therefore, if your interest is largely in the narrative the previous four films were weaving you're likely to be disappointed, though if a series of "boo" scares similar to what you've seen before are why you're buying a ticket, then there are more than enough to go around. Add to that, if seeing a...

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Directed by: Christopher Landon
Cast: Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Gabrielle Walsh
Running Time: 1 hr 24 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 3, 2013
Plot: Two young men (Jacobs & Diaz) discover strange things in their neighbor’s apartment.
Who’S It For? Fans of the Paranormal Activity films, and those looking for a decent start to 2014.
Overall
Part of the brilliance in the stupidly lucrative found footage concept is in the amount of excuses it provides. Bad cinematography? Not an issue, as these stories are about GoPro-wielding amateurs, not cinematographers (though a found footage horror movie involving a demon terrorizing the Asc would be grand). Silly editing? By no coincidence this too does not matter especially since camera implemented to document these supernatural shenanigans rarely getting a coming home chapter, nevertheless an epilogue in which their memory cards are placed into the hands of capable editors. In this case,...

The found-footage style of filmmaking has become so played out that the Paranormal Activity series' most recent attempt at reinvention comes off as a different kind of rehash – of The Blair Witch Project, Chronicle, Project X, and an assortment of other films that weren't all that original to begin with. This time out, instead of unfolding via homemade surveillance footage or via laptop cameras that have been conveniently left on, the gimmick is your usual guys-constantly-carrying-a-camera-around setup. Still, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones does depart from the typically bland McMansions of the earlier films and places us in a slightly more promising and alive milieu: a two-story apartment complex in a Mexican-American corner of Oxnard, California. We open on Graduation Day at the local high school, and see Hector (Jorge Diaz) and his best friend Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) fooling around with their new camera. We watch the two buds goof...

Horror franchises are nothing new, but the Paranormal Activity series stands apart as the only one to consist solely of found-footage films. It’s an overused and troublesome format that features very few successes, but not only have the four four earlier Pa films been box-office hits they’ve also featured some really solid scares and/or sequences. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones itself marks the series’ return after taking 2013 off, but while it’s too early to say if it will scare up some healthy ticket sales it’s already clear that it’s not quite as scary as the four that came before. It is better written and acted though, and that alone is a triumph for a found-footage film. Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) is celebrating his eighteenth birthday with friends, family, and a brand new video camera. The night after his weird downstairs neighbor is murdered Jesse and his two best friends, Hector...

Ever since a micro-budget horror film called Paranormal Activity mopped up the blood from the Saw series in the fall of 2009, there has been a new kid on the horror block. Each October we have been treated to a new entry in a series that began with a young couple, an always-present film camera, and an evil presence that tends to make itself known in the evening. Much to the surprise of many, this past Halloween was void of a new film in the found footage series. It is just a matter of time before the series runs its course – much like the Saw films that came before – but the gravesite hasn’t been prepared just yet. This year we will be treated to not just one but two Pa films from producer Oren Peli. What will shock fans even more though is just how different Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones...

Review Mark Harrison 3 Jan 2014 - 08:39
More spookiness occurs in a spin-off from the Paranormal Activity series. Here's Mark's review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones...
Last year came and went without any progression of the Paranormal Activity behemoth in cinemas. There was a teaser for this “Latin-American oriented” spin-off in the credits of 2012's Paranormal Activity 4, but it was pushed back from its original release date to the now-lucrative horror month of January.
And so, The Marked Ones serves as the series' first offering of 2014, with Paranormal Activity 5 to follow on its traditional Halloween-ish release date. The filmmakers have described the spin-off as a “cousin” to the series' main storyline, set within the same universe.
In the tradition of introducing new characters in each instalment, our protagonists are Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and Hector, (Jorge Diaz) two teens who film themselves dicking around in their apartment complex in Oxnard,...

I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity franchise ever since the first horrifying incident featuring Micah, Katie, and the invisible demon destroying their relationship. To save you all a bland history lesson, Paranormal Activity caused me countless sleepless nights and Paranormal Activity 2 asserted itself as an adept horror watch, but I’m one of the few people who thinks Paranormal Activity 3 started a lame downward slide, and Paranormal Activity 4, well – woof. There’s a reason why I came into Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones with minimal enthusiasm and low expectations, but much to my surprise, writer/director Christopher Landon boldly reinvigorates a franchise quickly becoming bland, boring, and without any innovation – until now.
Expanding upon the Paranormal Activity universe, Landon introduces us to Jesse (Andrew Jacobs), a high school graduate who encounters evil forces and becomes what is known as “marked.

This weekend, sinister forces return in "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones;" and, in limited release, Takeshi Kitano takes action in "Beyond Outrage," and Sharlto Copley wakes up in an "Open Grave."
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" continues the theme of mysterious forces laying claim to unsuspecting victims. In the fifth installment of the lucrative franchise, Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) discovers an inhuman bite mark on his arm, seemingly a sign that he has become "marked." As the ominous forces pursue Jesse, his family and friends attempt to ward off the dark spirits and save him.
Playing in limited release: Written and directed by Takeshi Kitano, "Beyond Outrage" also stars Kitano as a former Yakuza, who -- after getting released from prison -- enacts revenge against the Sanno-Kai crime syndicate. In "Open Grave," a man (Copley) awakes in a hole full of dead bodies. With no memory of the event,...

Anything to prevent it from reaching the public, like this lazily cobbled together offshoot of the Paranormal Activity movies.
