For those about to rock, we rebuke you! The very real nightmare of adolescence collides with a hellacious 40-year-old conspiracy theory in Hysteria!, Peacock‘s chilling dramedy that plays like My-So-Called Life meets the Salem Witch Trials. Set in a Midwestern suburb amid the late-‘80s “Satanic Panic” that had parents convinced hard rock was a force of evil, the chaos kicks off after a high-school football star goes missing. Seizing on the town’s sudden paranoia about cult culture, teen outcast Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and his only pals make a play for popularity by adding a Satanic slant to their struggling heavy metal band. But instead of just drawing a crowd with their pentagrams and songs about the devil, they draw the suspicion of a no-nonsense cop (Bruce Campbell), a zealous church lady (Anna Camp), and Dylan’s freaked-out mom (Julie Bowen) who all begin to fear that the...

The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!
Created by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! looks at a small Michigan town in the 1980s where the disappearance of a popular high school student leads to theories of devil worship and supernatural influences in the community. Hysteria! transports us back to an era shaped by social upheaval and conservative backlash. In the fall of 1989, Happy Hollow is a typical Midwest picture of Americana—until Ryan Hudson vanishes without a trace.

What marks the devil? Is it a hulking figure with burnt skin and massive horns? Is it a personal enemy or unseen force? What is hell, if not a high school hallway, haunted by inner and outer demons that can only be escaped when you walk out the door?
It might be all of that, as it is in Peacock’s “Hysteria!” created by Matthew Scott Kane. In the 1980s bliss of suburban Michigan, a the high school quarterback has disappeared, a bloody pentagram left in his wake. Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.

When people think of Julie Bowen as an actress, Modern Family often comes to mind before anything else. Julie played the lovable role of Claire Dunphy on the show for 11 seasons starting in 2009. The sitcom is highly revered for being one of the most progressive TV shows in recent history.
Modern Family did so well that it earned tons of awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Here’s what Julie just admitted about breaking free from the role of Claire.

Anna Camp’s devout Christian Tracy Whitehead is at the frontlines of stirring up a Satanic Panic frenzy in Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller “Hysteria!” Her central targets? High school outcasts and close friends Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony), Jordy (Chiara Aurelia), and Spud (Kezii Curtis).
That the trio is part of a heavy metal band draws Tracy’s ire, setting the stage for paranoia, mistrust, and occult madness when they decide to lean into their Satanic reputation. That backfires when a series of bizarre kidnappings, murders, and supernatural events trace back to the friends. That Tracy has domestic woes with her own daughter, Faith (Nikki Hahn), will only further complicate the growing division between teens and grownups alike in the small Michigan town plagued by, well, hysteria.

I want to say I had my fair share of teen horror growing up, but it wouldn’t be true, because as I’m writing this, I can’t think of a single show that fits the category. I don’t know if Pretty Little Liars really counts, but my first encounter with a “horror” show outside of the Indian Shh! Koi Hai or Aahat, which first aired a year before I was born (dang), was Supernatural, which in my opinion was technically for adults. Then would it be ironic for me to say horror is my favorite genre? I wouldn’t think so. Now, don’t get me wrong, there will be those who gate-keep the genre for people who’ve only seen the “classics,” which, for the most part, I haven’t. However, this doesn’t take away from my experiences of loving the genre growing up and...

If you’re a circumspect first-time TV creator given vaguely free rein, you have two choices (for the purposes of this exercise).
One, you can render your vision in the most easily digestible way possible, to make a series that is clearly promotable and satisfyingly resolved, in the hopes of engineering a hit and getting to make other shows in the future.
Or two, you can throw every idea in your brain in the general vicinity of the screen, aware that success is never guaranteed and you may never have another shot.
Sure, the result of the second course of action might be complete and utter chaos that audiences won’t know how to process and networks won’t know how to sell. Still, at least you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you left nothing on the table.

Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?
The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.
“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.
Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

Peacock’s upcoming series Hysteria! shows a town in the grips of a Satanic Panic — emphasis on the “satanic” part.
The streamer has released a full trailer for the show, which premieres Oct. 18 and centers on three high schoolers (Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis) whose heavy-metal band decides to lean into the fear caused when the high school quarterback goes missing and a pentagram is painted on the teen’s garage. Their makeover as satanists, however, unleashes forces — both among their peers and, possibly, with something otherworldly — that soon spin out of their control.
The trailer — which greatly expands on an earlier teaser — also shows a teenage girl (Nikki Hahn) being abducted by a creepy masked intruder and a woman (Julie Bowen) being stalked by an unseen entity. Watch it below.
The show’s regular cast also includes Anna Camp, horror icon Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North,...

“What are those kids up to? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.”
That fear haunts every generation. Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the sixties. Those same “free spirits” went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the “obscene” and “satanic” heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. Production on the Peacock series Hysteria! starring Julie Bowen and Anna Camp has shut down production in Atlanta for the remainder of the WGA writers strike.
Deadline understands the WGA picket line was respected by Teamsters and IATSE early Monday morning, the 35th day of the strike.
While production shutdowns have become a regular occurrence in New York and Los Angeles as a result of picketing by striking writers, this is believed to be the first series to suspend filming in Atlanta.
