Our Flag Means Death was cancelled by Max earlier this year, which was hugely upsetting for fans of the pirate comedy. There was hope that Our Flag Means Death might find a new home on another streaming service, but creator David Jenkins has confirmed that the series is on its way to Davy Jones’s locker.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins wrote on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss.“
Jenkins continued, “To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are lovely and earnest.

Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins has raised the white flag on his former Max comedy finding a new home.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins posted on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc., it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”
Max canceled the comedy starring Rhys Darby and exec producer Taika Waititi in January after a critically acclaimed two-season run.
Praised for its queer storylines, Our Flag Means Death has an impressive 94 percent score among critics and 93 percent rating with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Season one of the series consisted of 10 episodes and aired in March 2022, with the renewal coming for a shortened eight-episode run that wrapped in October.
Fans of Flag were vocal, launching campaigns to save the show and fundraising for billboards in New York and London.

If TV ratings were measured by intensity of fan devotion instead of viewing figures, Our Flag Means Death would currently be sailing its way to six seasons and a movie. People who love David Jenkins’ queer 18th century pirate comedy seriously love it, but according to Max, there aren’t enough of them to justify its continuation.

Our Flag Means Death fans are really doing all they can to “Renew as a Crew,” following Max‘s cancellation of the pirate rom-com starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi. Created by David Jenkins, the series tracks the unlikely love story between ill-equipped pirate wannabe Stede Bonnet (Darby) and the infamously fierce Blackbeard, a.k.a. Ed (Waititi). Originally debuting on Max in 2022, Our Flag Means Death returned for its second season in October 2023 and was unceremoniously canceled on January 9 of this year. (Credit: Nicola Dove/Max) But the show’s fervent fanbase isn’t taking the cancellation as the final word, rallying to save the series for a third and final season as intended by Jenkins. Their efforts have brought the “Renew as a Crew,” campaign all the way to Times Square as fans raised funds to run the advertisement reading “Save Our Flag Means Death.” But that’s...

Fans of the beloved pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death were dealt a heavy blow on January 9. Max has canceled Our Flag Means Death after just two seasons. The series’ creators had said they envisioned just three seasons total for the Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby-led rom-com, and recent social media posts from the cast and crew had fans hopeful that a Season 3 renewal was on the way. Now, “devastated” and “heartbroken” fans are reacting to the shocking cancellation online. Ofmd creator David Jenkins announced the cancellation himself on Instagram. “The bad news is clear. Our Flag won’t be returning for a third season,” Jenkins’ statement reads. “We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show.

Max is not moving forward with a third season of its period comedy series Our Flag Means Death. Deadline understands that the first two seasons will not be removed from the streaming service.
From David Jenkins, Our Flag Means Death is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge.
Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas … they found love. Now, they have to survive it.

New Zealander Rhys Darby made a splash in the U.S. in 2007 for his portrayal of band manager Murray Hewitt in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, a series that ended after only two short seasons. And while he and his co-stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have all moved on to other projects, the trio might surprise fans one day with a reunion.

As a former teaching colleague was very fond of saying: “You can’t make a pie out of sh*t”.
He was wrong and right. You can technically make all manner of things – up to and including pies – out of sh*t, but in the end, put any amount of sh*t in a pie and what you’ll end up with is a sh*t pie. Ingredients matter, is the point. Just ask Gordon Ramsay, or Minny Jackson from The Help.
The ingredients in the below movies and TV shows are the opposite of shit. They’re grade A, top drawer, high quality constituent parts… I really wish I hadn’t started this ‘shit’ thing. Does anybody else feel a bit queasy. And off pies?

Heading into season 2, it wasn't entirely clear what to expect from "Our Flag Means Death" upon its return. Creator David Jenkins's quirky, queer-friendly pirate comedy about a bunch of horny weirdos sailing the seven seas is the rare streaming show to explode in popularity after starting our fairly slow, largely thanks to its romantic pairing of fancy soft boi Stede "The Gentleman Pirate" Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his tattooed, leather-wearing, bad boy Bf Edward "Blackbeard" Teach (Taika Waititi). Would the series commit the faux pas of attempting to pander to its fans by giving them exactly what they seemed to want, or would it chart a more courageous course?
Thankfully, Jenkins and his crew elected to take the series in a darker and occasionally even upsetting direction without ever losing the wholesomeness and humor that made season 1 so lovely, in the process bringing greater depth to its characters. At the same time,...

Our Flag Means Death may have just concluded its second season, but a greenlight on Season 3 looms distant on the horizon as the higher-ups at HBO and Max continue to track the show’s progress. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Our Flag Means Death Season 2, Episodes 1-8.] Our Flag Means Death is TV’s best feel-good comedy right now. For fans who just watched the entire second season including that shocking twist in the finale episode, this statement might not ring entirely true, but bear with me! Debuting on Max in 2022, this series was initially promoted as a pirate workplace comedy created by David Jenkins, the mind behind People of Earth. It stars Rhys Darby as infamous pirate Stede Bonnet, a man who leaves his cushy aristocratic lifestyle for piracy, abandoning his wife and young kids to sail on his ship, the Revenge, with a paid crew. The show gained further attention when it was announced Taika Waititi of What We Do in the Shadows and Jojo Rabbit fame joined as Blackbeard and the director of the pilot episode. But no one could have predicted the fanfare that would unravel...

The Season 2 finale of “Our Flag Means Death” confronts a problem that has haunted many a romantic relationship: What if the chase is better than actually being together? It’s navigating the answer to that question that will set the stage moving forward.
“We see it all the time, where it’s like, ‘If this person were just available we could be in love.’ And then they become available, and you’re like, ‘Oh, no,'” series creator, showrunner and executive producer David Jenkins told TheWrap.
The creator likened Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard’s (Taika Waititi) relationship to finally scoring the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl.”
“There’s all this damage. Wait a minute. There’s a reason they never settled down,” Jenkins said.
That sentiment concisely sums up Stede and Ed’s complicated romance in Season 2. After vowing to run away together last season, Stede broke his promise and...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 8 “Mermen.”] Our Flag Means Death may have concluded its second season, but hopefully, there are more swashbuckling adventures on the horizon for Stede (Rhys Darby), Ed, a.k.a. Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and the rest of their crew, should the show be renewed for Season 3 at Max. One notable aspect of this delightful comedy though has to be the music, which has had several defining moments across the show’s run, whether it’s Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” from Season 1 or Kate Bush‘s “This Woman’s Work,” which played a prominent role in Season 2’s fantasy sequence in which a mermaid version of Stede saves a drowning Blackbeard. (Credit: Max/Nicola Dove) But one recurring music thread in Season 2 was none other than Nina Simone, a choice music supervisor Maggie Phillips reveals had to do with creator David Jenkins. “‘The Chain’ was...

Today marked the second season finale of Our Flag Means Death, and although the series hasn’t officially been renewed, creator David Jenkins has confirmed that season 3 would likely be the last.
“I love things in threes,“Jenkins told Variety. “That first act, second act, third act structure is so satisfying when it is done well, and you don’t overstay your welcome. I think this world of the show is a big world, and if the third season is successful, we could go on in a different way. But I think for the story of Stede and Ed, that is a three-season story.“

Nothing is certain on television anymore, and that seems to go double for any show underneath the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella. So while David Jenkins, creator of Max's pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death has intimated on social media that there are plans for a third season, which would be the show's last, there’s been no such indication from Max or their corporate parents that a third season is happening. That decision, either way, could come down at any time, but whatever way it lands, Our Flag Means Death's second-season finale, "Mermen," which dropped on Thursday morning, manages to thread the needle between delivering a season finale with more story on the horizon, and a satisfying end to the series.

Warning: This contains Major Spoilers for Our Flag Means Death season 2.
It’s probably safe to say that most Our Flag Means Death fans expected that the stars of season one – Taika Waititi as Blackbeard and Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet – would remain the focus of season two. Oh, how surprisingly wrong we were.
Because, while Ed and Stede’s chaotic, high-octane and engrossing relationship is certainly still the main plot point of Our Flag Means Death on the face of it, as season two progresses we realize we’ve been hoodwinked: we thought we were watching the story of them finding each other again, but really we were watching Izzy Hands’ story all along.
We met Izzy as Blackbeard’s right-hand man and all-round bad boy in season one, and his character seemed hell-bent on keeping Blackbeard as merciless and ferocious a pirate captain as his reputation suggested, repeatedly...

For once, Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard aren’t the most dysfunctional pirate couple on the deck of Max’s comedy series “Our Flag Means Death.”
In Season 2’s fourth episode, titled “Fun and Games,” that distinction belongs to legendary pirates Anne Bonny (Minnie Driver) and Mary Read (Rachel House). As the series has done with the shared history between the real-life Stede and Blackbeard, “Our Flag Means Death” interprets the fearsome women pirates as a couple. But they’ve been at the whole dating thing a lot longer than the boys.
Anne and Mary are running a jungle-bound antique shop when Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) stumble upon them during a lover’s spat. The long-awaited reunion of the couple –– after Stede abandoned their plans to run away to China in the Season 1 finale –– is off a bumpy start to say the least. A barely alive Blackbeard (who...

Watch out! This post contains spoilers.
David Jenkins, creator and showrunner of Max's pirate comedy "Our Flag Means Death," didn't know that episodes four and five would be released together at the same time when the show's creative team was first dreaming them up, but he tells Popsugar the pairing "makes sense" to him. "With a half-hour show particularly, the episodes can kind of build on each other in a nice way," he explains. And four and five do that really well since the relationship between Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard, aka Ed Teach (Taika Waititi) goes through some big changes during that time.
"Four is kind of them coming back together and talking again and even working through some of the issues and seeing a more f*cked up couple than them," Jenkins explains, referring to the relationship between Minnie Driver's Anne Bonny and Rachel House's...

As the recently concluded WGA strike conclusively proved, a TV writer’s work doesn’t stop the moment they shut Final Draft. A TV showrunner all the more so. For both Season 1 and Season 2 of “Our Flag Means Death,” creator David Jenkins has had to weigh in on every facet of the series: from the biker-gang look of Blackbeard’s (Taika Waititi) crew to the comic-splash-panel style of the cinematography in romantic moments between the notorious pirate and the show’s more low-key infamous lead Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) to the quality of clouds brought in by the VFX team for the show’s LED background.
So while stepping into the director’s chair for the first two episodes of Season 2 did give Jenkins even more and new choices to make, he found it was a smooth transition; the work of directing honestly offered a bit of a break from...

This article contains spoilers for "Our Flag Means Death" season 2.
It's tough out there for pirates these days, especially if you're Taika Waititi's Ed Teach, aka Blackbeard, who's been on a bit of a downward spiral ever since Stede (Rhys Darby) stood him up towards the end of season 1. None of us love rejection, but Blackbeard takes things harder than most; he exiles most of Stede's crew and steals his ship, then spends the first few episodes of season 2 on a reckless streak of violence that ends in his crew doing a mutiny. They nearly kill him in the process, and as we see Blackbeard metaphorically being tied to a giant rock and getting dragged to the bottom of the ocean, it seems like this might be the end for him.
Luckily, back in Blackbeard's real life, Stede walks in and starts begging his unconscious body not to die,...

This post contains spoilers for season 2 of "Our Flag Means Death."
The crew of the Revenge set sail again this week — with a lot more expectant eyes on them than last time. "Our Flag Means Death," the charming pirate rom-com whose fervent fanbase seemed to grow exponentially during the show's off-season, has finally returned to Max for its second season, and so far, it's delivering on all fronts. The first three episodes include multiple death fake-outs (Lucius is back! Izzy isn't dead!), a few well-executed romantic reshuffles and character introductions, and a whole lot of the show's signature zany, sweet humor.
They also feature a lot of angst. The season 1 finale made it clear that Ed Teach (Taika Waititi), aka Blackbeard, was in a bad headspace post-breakup with Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), but throwing Lucius overboard and feeding Izzy his own toes proved to be just the beginning of his reign of lonely terror.

Here’s some pirate math: If a pirate workplace comedy has over 2,000 VFX shots in the first season and only about 1,000 VFX shots in Season 2, how has the scope grown? By being smarter about how it uses them.
“We had a better methodology in how we used our skies and our oceans,” “Our Flag Means Death” VFX supervisor David Van Dyke told IndieWire. “There were certain things that we did [in Season 1] that were a little self-imposed, and we had to kind of roll up our sleeves and grind our way out of mistakes. This season, we knew what to stay away from and we were able to use our pennies more effectively.”
That in turn allowed the Max series to tackle much more ambitious VFX challenges as the scope of the Pirate Republic widens to include the legendary Zheng Yi Sao (Ruibo Qian) and her pirate navy, seas that match the...

This post contains spoilers for the first three episodes of "Our Flag Means Death" season 2.
The second season of "Our Flag Means Death" has premiered on Max, and if you've watched, you know that one of the newcomers to the cast, Ruibo Qian, is playing someone who has a few run-ins with our beloved, Muppet-like pirates.
Qian also has something in common with the show's two leads — Rhys Darby, who plays Stede Bonnet, and Taika Waititi, who plays Blackbeard — in that her character, Zheng Yi Sao, is based on a real-life pirate who once sailed the seas.
Like the show's Blackbeard and Stede, however, Qian's Zheng Yi Sao differs from her real-life counterpart. "There's about a 100-years' time difference between Zheng Yi Sao and Blackbeard and Stede, so we're already inventing that they're all together in the same world," series creator David Jenkins told me an interview. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Our Flag Means Death, Season 2, Episodes 1-3.] Our Flag Means Death‘s second season has kicked off with much to unpack. Thankfully, showrunner David Jenkins is answering some of our biggest questions about Stede (Rhys Darby), Ed, a.k.a. Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and more fan-favorite characters. Dropping three full episodes, Max set the stage for the season as Stede and Ed followed different paths before crashing back together in a moving final sequence of the third installment. After working on the Republic of Pirates at Spanish Jackie’s, Stede and his remaining crew are pawned off onto pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao (Ruibo Qian), who they sail with on the Red Flag until they bump into a ghost-like Revenge, which an unraveling Blackbeard captains until his crew mutinied. And that question is: did Lucius survive?!
We met the quick-witted Lucius Springs in season one as one of the crew members aboard The Revenge, the pirate ship manned by Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), and he instantly became a fan favorite, especially as his relationship with fellow crew member Black Pete blossomed through the series, and as he became an unofficial relationship counsellor for Stede and Blackbeard.

Our Flag Means Death is anything but smooth sailing for swashbuckling loves Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), who are navigating life without each other when Season 2 picks up. Ultimately, their romance is a balancing act, as series creator David Jenkins teases ahead of the October 5th premiere. While Season 1 saw Stede leave his life of comfort behind to become the Gentleman pirate, it’s Blackbeard’s turn for a midlife crisis. “You can see Season 1 as Stede’s midlife crisis and Blackbeard kind of gets swept up in [it]. I think we kind of start with Blackbeard’s midlife crisis in Season 2,” Jenkins tells TV Insider. (Credit: Nicola Dove/Max) Viewers got a taste of that crisis when Blackbeard began unraveling after he was seemingly abandoned by Stede in Season 1. Referring to himself as the Kraken, he painted his face with black makeup around his eyes, and teasers for...

A pirate's life isn't all that it's cut out to be. On Sept. 14, HBO released the trailer for "Our Flag Means Death" season two, which finds our lovable band of chaotic pirates facing not just the perils of danger but also of love. When the Max series, starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi as pirates Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard), premiered in 2022, it roped fans in as a comedy stacked with famously funny actors - but it's the budding romance between the two pirate leads that made them stay. The first trailer for “Our Flag Means Death” Season 2 has arrived, and it’s full of old romances and new characters.
The show picks up right where Season 1 left off. “Our Flag Means Death” will follow Gentleman Pirate captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) as he tries to reunite his crew and apologize to his best friend and new love, Ed, aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).
After a near-death experience, Season 1 ended with Stede choosing to return to his old life and wife rather than sail away with Ed. It wasn’t a rejection that the notoriously violent Blackbeard took well and that’s set to be a main crux of this new season.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, Season 2 stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon and Leslie Jones.
