Young's family is related to Otto Harbach, the Broadway lyricist of the 1920'3 and 30's who wrote "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "Rosemarie", and many other song lyrics.
Young has written and produced three documentary films: Two for Ballet (1993), One for Shakespeare (2009) and Berlin Electric (2013 - in progress). He was an Executive Producer (JATF Productions) of The Swan Lake Story - A Disney Special in 1989.
In 1997, Young began to write books on music, completing a critique of American musical culture in 1998. He was subsequently invited, two times, by the White House to become a candidate for Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Dana Gioia was chosen at that time. Young later became a music journalist, writing opinion pieces for Newsday, The Intercollegiate Review, and the National Catholic Register.
