CBS is making good on its promise to bring After Midnight to its late night lineup in early 2024.
The network will debut the show, hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson and based on Comedy Central’s @midnight, on Jan. 16 — or technically Jan. 17, as it debuts at 12:37 a.m. Et/Pt, but at the tail end of the Jan. 16 broadcast day.
The show will feature a panel of comics, actors and other celebrities (guest lineups will be announced later) discussing the internet buzz of the day in a game-show format. After Midnight’s mission statement is to be “the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet.”
After Midnight will air in the post-Late Show With Stephen Colbert spot previously occupied by The Late Late Show, which ran for 28 years under four different hosts. James Corden ended his eight-year tenure as host in April 2023. For the past several months,...

CBS kicks off a new era in late-night on Tuesday, January 16, when it launches “After Midnight” at 12:37 a.m. hosted by comic Taylor Tomlinson.
The series, which will rely on a rotating series of panelists to discuss the latest trends and memes in the digi-sphere, will follow an original hour of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“After Midnight,” based on the premise of “@midnight,” a program that ran on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017,” breaks late-night tradition at CBS, which has long depended on a more typical program after 12:30 a.m. But network executives, realizing that the business of wee-hours TV is in flux, canceled “The Late Late Show” that has run for decades in that slot, hosted by people such as Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson and James Corden. “After Midnight” is said to cost significantly less to produce — a boon in an era when...

Nearly nine months after James Corden said goodbye to The Late Late Show, CBS has finally dated his replacement.
After Midnight, a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, starring rising comedian Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16.
The show will, of course, air in The Late Late Show’s former spot at 12:37am, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
It comes almost a year after Deadline revealed that a reboot of @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network, would replace Corden.
Tomlinson, who has recorded a number of Netflix specials, won the hosting job at the end of last year, beating X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the gig.
Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

This article contains spoilers for What We Do In The Shadows season 5 episode 4.
Politics are a draining business, as local community jurisdictions are filled with meaningless edicts requiring endless paperwork. This is the clot to the workings of American society, but lifeblood to those who thrive on the mind-numbing boredom of legislative agendas, especially those filed in triplicate. What We Do in the Shadows season 5 episode 4 “The Campaign” takes on the establishment, speaking hard truths to power in order to drain it.
“The Campaign” is filled with surprises. One is there is a cap on how many DUIs can be on someone’s record before being given the okay to run for office on Staten Island. This is ultimately the reason Sean Rinaldi (Anthony Atamanuik) is dropping out of the race for Staten Island Comptroller, in spite of all the hard work he put in to make his platform inclusive in “Pride Parade.

Cult series Joe Pera Talks with You has been canceled.
Adult Swim, part of the Warner Bros. Discovery universe, has ended the show after three seasons.
Pera revealed the news on his own email newsletter.
TV Cancellations Photo Gallery: Shows Ending In 2022 & Beyond
The 11-minute series launched in 2018 started as an animated short, followed by a live-action short. Its third season aired between November and December 2021.
It follows the mild-mannered Pera as a fictional version of himself, living in Michigan and teaching choir at a middle school. The lo-fi series sees him talk to the audience – Mr Rogers- style about mundane subjects such as breakfast and ironing.
“The more I learn how TV works, the more I realize that it’s kind of a miracle that our quiet, 11-minute show about rocks, beans, grocery stores, and breakfast crews got on the air and lasted as long as it did,” he wrote.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) made history as the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2022 Best Character Voice-Over ballot list below consists of a whopping 222 performances. Seeking a third consecutive victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Showtime’s late-night variety series “Ziwe” has revealed a first look at its second season, which features an impressive lineup of guests including Chet Hanks, gossip blog Deux Moi and Charlamagne Tha God.
In the star-studded trailer — fittingly set to Saucy Santana’s “Material Girl” — host Ziwe is back to asking her guests all the hard questions. “What exactly does empowerment mean to you?” Ziwe questions supermodel Emily Ratajkowski, to which she responds: “I don’t know what empowerment means.” Ziwe then asks Hanks, “What accent will you be conducting this interview in?” In her interview with anonymous Instagram blogger Deux Moi, Ziwe queries, “What race are you?” And when it comes time for the apology cam, almost everyone has a confession to make — besides Hanks, it seems.

Empowerment TV is back, Ziwe style.
The eponymous late night variety series, hosted by comedy writer and influencer Ziwe, returns April 29 on Showtime streaming and on demand before debuting on air May 1.
With guests like Ilana Glazer calling Ziwe’s interview style “uncomfortable” and controversial son of Tom Hanks, Chet Hanks, doubling down on his behavior, Ziwe’s apology cam will no doubt get a lot of use this season.
Season 2 will feature all-new interviews, musical numbers, guest stars, and sketches. Showtime on demand and streaming subscribers will continue to get first looks at episodes every Friday before they officially premiere on Showtime Sunday nights at 11 p.m. Et/Pt.
“Ziwe” is produced by A24 for Showtime, with Ziwe serving as an executive producer along with Jamund Washington, Jo Firestone, and Hunter Speese.
Ziwe landed her Showtime series in April 2021 after hosting a viral Instagram Live series questioning cultural figures on race.

Season 3 of “Joe Pera Talks with You,” released in 2021, is set in 2018. It’s not that this is a show driven by nostalgia for a world three years gone by. It’s that fully appreciating everything that’s around you just takes a different pace.
The opening episodes of the show introduced Joe Pera (Joe Pera) as a tour guide of sorts through the points of interest in his northern Michigan surroundings. That season brings as much discovery for Joe as he tries to create for his audience through the cracks in the fourth wall. In their first public appearance since WarnerMedia merged the two development divisions this past April, execs from HBO Max and Adult Swim previewed their upcoming slates, releasing new footage from adult-skewing offerings “10-Year-Old-Tom” and “Smiling Friends,” while talking up several more.
Created by Michael Cusack (“Yolo: Crystal Fantasy”) and Zack Hadel (of the popular YouTube channel “psychicpebbles”), “Smiling Friends” picks up where the viral 2020 short left off, following the lives of two hapless cheer merchants sent to make their clients smile. Mixing 2D, primitive character designs with candy colors and the winking edge of an online forum, the series is due out later this year.
“[Though they’re both well known independently,] combined, Hadel and Cusack are doing something really special,” said Walter Newman, senior VP comedy development at Adult Swim. “From the character designs to the voice work, it represents a lot of what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

“Together Together” features an enviable cast of comedy favorites, from big name faves like Ed Helms and Tig Notaro to the recently crowned prince of weird Julio Torres. But the most exciting performance comes from alt-comedy darling Patti Harrison, who makes an understated splash in her first leading film role. As a recurring presence on TV shows like “Shrill” and “Search Party” and a writer for “Big Mouth,” Harrison’s stand-up is marked by a droll deadpan that borders on antagonistic. That blasé sensibility is rebranded in “Together Together” as a subdued ambivalence that works for the character’s arrested emotional development. Unfortunately, Harrison is the brightest point in “Together Together,” which

Save Yourselves!, a Bleecker Street comedy sci-fi film in which pouffes invade and seek to destroy Earth, hits theaters this fall. Written and directed by Alex H. Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the Sundance-featured rom-com focuses on a millennial couple portrayed by John Reynolds and Sunita Mani, who head to a cabin in a bid to unplug, but instead find themselves in the midst of an invasion.
What is a pouffe? Per the trailer, they look kind of cute and unobtrusive as the couple Jack (Reynolds) and Su (Mani) observe one in their cabin.

"Prepare yourselves... for a new form of extra-terrestrial terror!" Bleecker Street has released a fun "retro" trailer for Save Yourselves!, a relationship comedy mixed up with an alien invasion sci-fi. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is opening next month. A young Brooklyn couple heads to an upstate cabin to unplug from their phones and reconnect with each other. Blissfully unaware of what's happening, they are left to their own devices as the planet falls under attack. "What if you unplugged from technology for a week and really reconnected with your partner? It’s not like the world would end, right? Right? Right?" Starring John Reynolds and Sunita Mani as Jack and Su, with a small cast also including Ben Sinclair, John Early, and Jo Firestone. This is a great trailer, I just wish it was only the old B&w trailer and not the bookends.

In the first trailer for “Save Yourselves!,” a comedy sci-fi that was a Sundance darling, a young millennial couple decides to unplug from their phones and travel to a cabin upstate — only for them to be blissfully unaware when aliens invade and quickly destroy civilization.
“Save Yourselves!” stars John Reynolds and Sunita Mani as the clueless couple now working to survive the alien invasion, not to mention figure out how to even function without the help of their smartphones.
“We don’t have any skills,” Mani says in the trailer. “I’ve been wanting to Google ‘How to build a trap to catch a rabbit’ so bad,” Reynolds replies.
The good news is that the aliens in “Save Yourselves!” are all adorable little colored poof balls that look like fluffy pillows or decorations, and the couple will figure out how to survive with or without WiFi and cell reception.

"Okay, bye world!" Bleecker Street has released an official trailer for an indie titled Save Yourselves!, a relationship comedy mixed up with an alien invasion sci-fi. It's not what you think! And that's a good thing. This originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, as it's a unique and amusing take on alien romcoms. A young Brooklyn couple heads to an upstate cabin to unplug from their phones and reconnect with each other. Blissfully unaware of their surroundings, they are left to their own devices as the planet falls under attack. Starring John Reynolds and Sunita Mani as Jack and Su, with a small cast also including Ben Sinclair, John Early, and Jo Firestone. The more this year has gone on, I have started to think this might just be the perfect apocalypse film. The aliens are so cute and cuddly, and not only that, but the...

In the words of “Sweeney Todd” pie baker Mrs. Lovett, “Times is hard.” As everyone adjusts to the new reality of working remotely, comedians and filmmakers who rely on freelance work are being hit hard. Film and TV productions are shutting down faster than we can update our exhaustive running list. Comedians are losing out on precious weekly gigs. Theater practitioners are worried the nonprofit theater world may not bounce back. An already tenuous lifestyle just became a whole lot harder.
And yet, creatives gotta create. Lock a comedian or filmmaker in their apartment for seven days straight and they are bound to come up with some pretty entertaining — if more than a little bizarre — content. With everyone else stuck at home craving human connection and distractions, they have a more willing audience than ever before. In an effort to find a silver lining, IndieWire is keeping tabs on the...

National Lampoon, which turns 50 this year, has inked a series deal with Quibi for eight episodes of Let’s Go, Atsuko! A (woke) Japanese Game Show based on an eponymous live show and podcast by comedian and actress Atsuko Okatsuka.
In each episode, two contestants share with host and creator Okatsuka something they love and something they fear, which she uses in comic scenarios to humiliate them and test their “wokeness.”
The project is the latest in a series of steps to aggressively relaunch the iconic brand over the past year under President Evan Shapiro, who said he’s in the process of trying to close a deal with another Ott platform for a second show.
The former executive of IFC, Participant Media and NBCUniversal, and a prolific television producer, is also rolling out Monday a deal with membership platform Patreon, And he said Lampoon will be collaborating on a...

Don’t laugh at him (with him is fine), but Evan Shapiro believes his new class of the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” is as talented as the original one.
“We legitimately have what I would call ‘the next class’ of the ‘Radio Hour,'” Shapiro, the former head of Seeso who now leads The National Lampoon’s rebranding, told TheWrap. “The level of talent that was represented originally, at a different stage in their careers today, reflective of their time.”
In making that big comparison, Shapiro is talking about “where they are as artists, and their voices, and where their backgrounds are from, but also in their ability to take on mainstream culture in a very subversive way,” to be as clear for readers and fair to him as possible.

The relaunch of National Lampoon as a comedy production house begins in earnest this week with the Dec. 19 debut of “National Lampoon Radio Hour,” a sketch comedy podcast written and performed by Cole Escola, Jo Firestone and clutch of rising-star comedians.
On the latest episode of Variety‘s Strictly Business podcast, National Lampoon president Evan Shapiro discusses the guiding principles behind the effort to revitalize the comedy brand that was a primal force in the careers of Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Bill Murray, John Hughes, Christopher Guest, Harold Ramis, Michael O’Donoghue and other heavyweights.
The company founded in 1970 as a humor magazine by Harvard Lampoon alumni expanded into a radio sketch comedy series, albums and live stage shows. As industry legend goes, the founders of National Lampoon turned down the offer from Lorne Michaels to develop the original “Radio Hour” into a TV series. That prompted Michaels to hire away...
