Sony’s investment has set the stage for Kadokawa to expand its publishing output, aiming to release 9,000 titles annually by fiscal year 2027—a 1.5-fold increase from fiscal year 2023.
Kadokawa President Tsuyoshi Natsuno revealed the ambitious plan during an interview with Nikkei.
The initiative focuses on expanding the company’s core publishing business, which currently accounts for half of Kadokawa’s revenue.
Natsuno also indicated that the company’s initial target of 7,000 annual publications by fiscal year 2027 could be reached earlier, as soon as fiscal 2025.
To achieve this, Kadokawa plans to expand its editorial staff by 1.4 times, increasing to around 1,000 editors through mid-career hires.
This staffing increase is designed to maintain the current publication output per editor, avoiding overburdening the workforce while meeting ambitious growth targets.

Sony will donate $5 million in support of wildfire relief, as Southern California works its way toward containment of numerous fires in the region, the company announced on Monday.
Sony plans to allocate funds to organizations supporting first responders, community relief and rebuilding efforts, and employee assistance programs. The corporation is just the latest to announce a donation today, on the heels of Amazon, which has pledged $10 million to the cause. Warner Bros Discovery subsequently pledged $15 million, with actress Eva Longoria pledging $1 million through her foundation, using funds from the Jeff Bezos Courage and Civility Award, which she was awarded last spring.
“Los Angeles has been the home of our entertainment business for more than 35 years,” noted Sony Group Corporation’s Chairman and CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, in a joint statement alongside President, COO and CFO, Hiroki Totoki. “Through our many thousands of employees, partners and friends based there, our roots run deep in this community.

As multiple wildfires rage in Los Angeles County, studios are mobilizing their own response efforts. Following Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery has committed $15 million in donations to support relief efforts while Amazon, Comcast and Netflix directed $10 million apiece and Sony pledged an additional $5 million, while Paramount Global and Fox Corp added $1 million.
Warner Bros. Discovery, led by CEO David Zaslav, stated through a spokesperson that the company is sending the funds “for immediate response and rebuilding efforts” to unspecified organizations. “Our studio has called Burbank home for more than 100 years, and we are focused on what needs to be done to help those impacted rebound from this disaster and rebuild in the weeks, months, and years ahead,” a Warners rep said.
Netflix plans to direct its donations to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Community Fund Wildfire Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, Motion Picture and Television Fund, and Entertainment Community Fund.

Sony Group unveiled a new focus to its business strategy on Monday at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it was an area that sits somewhat adjacent to all of the things the Japanese conglomerate has long been famous for — electronics, gaming, Hollywood moviemaking and a richly valued music catalog. The firm suggested it was pinning a sizable share of its future growth on anime, the formerly niche content category that continues to impress analysts as one of Japan’s most lucrative cultural exports.
Sony has been putting the pieces together for a major emphasis on anime for several years, but the high-profile presentation at CES marked the first time the group publicly underscored just how much firepower it plans to bring to bear on the sector. The alliance follows Sony’s proposal in October 2024 and discussions with Kadokawa that concluded in an agreement.

When Helldivers 2 burst onto the gaming scene at the start of the year, it seemed destined for greatness. Arrowhead’s co-op sci-fi shooter captured hearts with its blend of intense action, strategic gameplay, and a healthy dose of satirical humor. The game’s initial success had many predicting it would be a strong contender for Game of the Year.

But as The Game Awards 2024 nominations were announced, Helldivers 2 was notably absent from the coveted Game of the Year category. While the game did secure nominations for Best Ongoing Game and Best Community Support, many fans are left wondering what went wrong.
The answer lies not with the game itself, but with Sony’s controversial decisions that may have cost the title its shot at gaming’s highest honor.

It seems that PlayStation and its parent company Sony have learned nothing from their mistakes in 2024. The company will continue to force players to connect PlayStation accounts to play games on PC, even single-player games like God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The decision was confirmed in a recent financial call with Sonys president, who listed safety as the number one reason for the Psn requirements.
The move to keep requiring a PlayStation account wont make PC users happy, but perhaps a more upfront approach will work, since the strategy to force integration months after launch didnt work very well for PlayStation with Helldivers 2 earlier this year. Either way, Sony is off to a bad start and its current strategy isnt incurring much goodwill from PC players.

Despite recent failures, PlayStation wants fans to know that it has no intention of shifting away from the live-service model. Sony's controversial decision to double-down on games-as-a-service has been a mixed bag as it's managed to strike gold with titles like Helldivers 2 while also delivering some instantaneous flops like the ill-fated Concord. Those dips haven't affected the company's business plan though as it intends to stick with its current strategy and views its less successful endeavors as opportunities to improve.
Per GamesRadar+, Sony executive Hiroki Totoki recently explained to investors, through a translator, that the company is "still in the process of learning" about the live-service model, noting that launching new IP is always successful and Concord likely required more pre-launch preparation:
So, probably, we need to have a lot of gates, including user testing and internal evaluation, and the timing of such gates, we need to bring them forward.

The relationship between Sony and PC gamers has always been complicated, but their attempt to mandate Psn account linking for Helldivers 2 several months after its PC launch remains a sore point in that rocky relationship. What started as a celebration of PlayStation’s growing commitment to PC gaming quickly turned into a PR nightmare that’s still having ripple effects today.

In a major shake up at Sony Pictures Entertainment, chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra is stepping down from his role, and Ravi Ahuja, the current Chairman of Global Television Studios and President and COO for Spe, is being elevated to President and CEO, the company announced Monday.
The move will be effective January 2, 2025.
Vinciquerra joined Sony in 2017 and led the company on a pivot away from streaming. He largely made Sony an “arms dealer” not burdened down by its own streaming service, many of which have struggled to attain profitability at rival studios. He was also a factor in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023. Recently, he led the charge on Sony acquiring theater chain Alamo Drafthouse.
Ahuja has been with Spe since 2021 under Vinciquerra’s leadership team. He previously led Sony’s India division but has since been behind hits like “The Crown,” “The Boys,” “Jeopardy!,” and “The Last of Us.

In a surprise executive shuffle, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra is stepping down from his CEO role, effective Jan. 2, 2025. Spe’s current Chairman of Global Television Studios and President and COO, Ravi Ahuja, will be taking the reigns as Spe President and CEO.

Despite Sony losing Paramount to Skydance, that’s not the reason for Vinciquerra’s exit. Rather, I’m told, a succession plan has been in place for the last two-and-half-years. One indication of what was in store to come: Ahuja...

Sony Pictures Entertainment is set for a transition at the top in January when Tony Vinciquerra steps down from his role as CEO and hands the reins to Ravi Ahuja.
Ahuja will become president and CEO of the Culver City studio as of Jan. 2. Vinciquerra, who has served as Sony Pictures Entertainment’s chairman and CEO since June 2017, will remain in an advisory role as non-executive chairman through the end of 2025.
The succession plan for Spe has been in the works for two years, after Vinciquerra negotiated his most recent employment contract with parent company Sony Corp. in Japan.
Ahuja will report to Sony Group Corp. chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and Hiroki Totoki, who is president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for Sony Group Corp.

There’s a changing of the guard at Sony Pictures Entertainment, with chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra set to step down, and Ravi Ahuja set to become president and CEO beginning in 2025.
Ahuja was elevated to president and COO earlier this year, a move meant to position him as a successor to Vinciquerra and give him experience across the company. Vinciquerra will remain with Spe as non-executive chairman through 2025.
“It wasn’t so much of a decision, but a process, because we started this two and a half years ago when I signed my last agreement was that this would be the target, that we would get Ravi ready for the job and promote him in March, and then hand it over at the end of the year,” Vinciquerra tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The decision on my part at that point was that I had planned on doing this for...

Even though Shari Redstone has inked a deal with David Ellison’s Skydance Media to relinquish control of Paramount Global, the company has until Aug. 21 to mull any other takeover options during a “go-shop” window. But one contender that had been considered a serious suitor has reiterated that it won’t be making another proposal for Paramount.
“At this point in time … it does not fit well with our strategy, and that is a judgment that we have handed down,” said Sony president, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki during an Aug. 7 earnings call when asked whether the company would make another proposal for the Redstone-controlled film and TV empire.
The exec later added of Paramount, “If we have to acquire the entire organization, it would be quite risky because our capital allocation itself — it may not be well fitted to our capital allocation strategy.”

July in full swing sees top media executives and an impressive political cohort gathered at a storied mountain resort to hike, chat and whitewater raft. The elixir of relaxed proximity distilled in Sun Valley’s rustic woods is credited with hatching a number of consequential deals over the decades.
But this year could one deal be undone? It’s unlikely, but Shari Redstone, who controls Paramount, and Barry Diller, who might like to, are both present and Par’s recent merger agreement with Skydance has a 45-day window for other interested buyers to jump in.
Skydance CEO David Ellison is not at Sun Valley but quite likely will be next year as a major studio owner-operator.

PlayStation has massively grown its PC portfolio after committing to the platform in 2019, and while it did stumble along the way, like with the recent Helldivers 2 Psn debacle, the company has seen a great deal of success from its double-dip launches.
Back in 2022, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst confirmed that they will release live-service games day and date on PC, which is sensible, and big singleplayer titles will be spaced out to at least two years between their PS5 and PC launches. However, a recent rumor suggests this may have changed.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

Earlier in the year, Xbox underwent a massive shift in strategy by porting four games from its back-catalog to competing platforms PlayStation and Nintendo. This opened up the brand to lots of ridicule, and speculation about whether tentpole titles like Hellblade 2 and Starfield will make the jump as well.
What stung even worse for Xbox fans was the staggering success of Helldivers 2; even starting a petition to have Arrowhead’s co-op shooter ported over to Microsoft’s console. Sadly, their demands went unanswered, but in an interesting turn of events, the chances of the game showing up on Xbox may have increased, and Microsoft may reciprocate with the Ninja Theory sequel.
PlayStation’s New CEO Is Open To Games Beyond PS5 Arrowhead’s smash-hit co-op shooter may be heading to Xbox, it’s claimed.

The Fallout TV show has reignited the conversation regarding the next installment in the game series. The fourth game was released in 2015, followed by 76 in 2018, marking the last major story update to the franchise nearly 10 years ago.
Nolan’s series, while a great addition to the timeline, now has fans questioning the developers about a fifth game. The studio has been working on other projects in the meantime, and the Microsoft acquisition also needs to be taken into account. The console war has always been heated over the games that are unavailable on either platform. Take the example of Starfield and Helldivers 2. This is a huge edge in the argument for Xbox gamers, as it’s unavailable on Sony console, but it won’t be the case for long.
The same goes for Helldivers 2 but the tables might turn soon. The popular live service title has garnered a huge fanbase, but as a Psn first-party title, Xbox gamers have been exempted from the game. However, according to a recent report, the co-op shooter might come to Microsoft’s console.
Helldivers 2 May Be Coming to Xbox
Helldivers 2 right now is only available on PC and PS5.
In the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast, co-host Nick “Shpeshal Nick” Baker has claimed that there were “preliminary” talks about bringing Helldivers 2 to Series X|S consoles. Baker has also stated that talks are in “very early” stages.

Other titles included The Pope’s Exorcist ($75 million global) and No Hard Feelings ($40 million global through end-June/$85.8M running total).
Regarding adjusted Oibda (Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization), Sony said the Pictures division came in 57% lower than the same period in 2022. The drops were attributed to a decrease in sales and higher marketing costs in support of a greater number of theatrical releases.
Sales in the division were $2.33 billion, down from $2.64 billion a year ago. The results were impacted by a decrease in deliveries of U.S. television series as well as lower...

Operating income at Sony Pictures Entertainment fell by 45 percent or $1.04 billion to $894 million, as sales fell by $851 million on the back of a lack of blockbuster theatrical hits and one off gains logged in fiscal 2021. Sales grew by 11 percent on a yen basis due to the strength of the dollar against the Japanese currency.
The previous year had been boosted by the runaway success of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, as well as the $1 billion sale of Gsn Games and a $500 million licensing deal for Seinfeld to Netflix.
In the fourth quarter, January to March, the film unit saw profit up slightly over the same period the previous year to $119 million. Sony’s fourth-quarter film sales came in at $2.71 billion.
New CEO Hiroki Totoki, who took over from Kenichiro Yoshida on April 1, said that paid subscribers to the anime streaming platform Crunchyroll had topped 10 million.

Sony Group Corp. CFO Hiroki Totoki, who is set to succeed Kenichiro Yoshida as group president on April 1, outlined his evolving corporate strategy for the Japanese tech and entertainment giant on Monday.
“I’m very much obsessed with growth. It’s very important for any company to get growth to maintain people’s motivation and maintain the customer,” Totoki told the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
He added that, as Sony’s financial chief, “I always take care of two key metrics. Number one is growth and number two is the profit margin. And, as a CFO, I always focused on these two important metrics. If they go in the right way, the other metrics will take care of themselves. And that’s my simple philosophy.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment recorded 179 million in operating income for the third quarter ended December 31, 2022. That figure reps an 86 decrease on a dollar basis versus the same period last year, though it’s tough to compare apples to apples here since Q3 2021 had a massive assist from the phenomenal global box office performance of Spider-Man: No Way Home along with the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Also cited as culprits for the swing were lower revenues for television productions versus Q3 2021 which benefited from the licensing of Seinfeld and the absence of a gain from the transfer of Gsn Games business in Q3 2021. The full-year forecast for the segment remains unchanged from Sony’s last earnings report, with 115 billion yen (893.7 million) in profits expected for fiscal year 2023.

Sony Pictures’ operating income for its fiscal third quarter ending December fell to 179 million, down 86 percent from 1.31 billion in the same period the previous year, hit by the lack of major theatrical hits and lower revenue from television licensing.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile was the Sony unit’s biggest earner with 96 million, followed by Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, both logging 25 million.
The same quarter in 2021 had seen the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, along with the sale of Gsn Games and the licensing deal for Seinfeld, delivering the film unit its best-ever results.
Quarterly revenue at the pictures division fell 42 percent to 2.35 billion from 4.06 billion, despite contributions from the acquisitions of Bad Wolf and Industrial Media, the company said in Tokyo on Thursday.

Spidey was Sony’s financial superhero in 2021: The final three months of 2021 brought Sony’s pictures division net profits of $1.3 billion for the last three months of 2021 due to theatrical releasing, including the blockbuster movie “Spider Man: No Way Home.”
The $1.31 billion figure exceeds profits of $194 million for the same quarter in 2020.
In a presentation of financial results Tuesday night Pacific Time and on Wednesday in Tokyo, Sony executives also attributed the licensing of the U.S. TV series “Seinfeld” for the success of the division, which includes Sony’s film studios, television and TV network operations. Other contributions to the division’s strong quarter also included the success of “Venom:Let There Be Carnage” and better sales for media networks resulting from the acquisition of Crunchyroll.
Parent company, Sony Group’s net profits grew by 20% to $4.15 billion. Sales were up by 13% to $27.2 billion, the company reported.
Financial details for the three months ending Dec.
