“We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing,” he told Attitude magazine. “So, yeah, I think I’m just learning now like, ‘You are allowed to be loved.’ You don’t have to be excellent or aspire to that term, ‘Black excellence.’ What the hell?”
Ncuti continued, “There’s so much white mediocrity that gets celebrated, and Black people, we have to be absolutely flawless to get half of [that] anyway.

Rawandan-British actor Ncuti Gatwa is on the rise with roles in “Sex Education,” “Barbie,” and currently, as the lead of “Doctor Who,” the wildly popular BBC sci-fi comedy series that first aired in 1963.
Gatwa’s casting in “Doctor Who” saw the actor face an extreme level of racist backlash, reminding us all over again of the sexism that fellow “Doctor Who” alumni Jodie Whittaker experienced when she was hired to play the Doctor in 2017 (the role has mostly been portrayed by white men so far).

“Doctor Who” and “Sex Education” star Ncuti Gatwa said in a recent interview with Attitude magazine that Black people have a pressure to be excellent that is disproportionate to white people, be it in Hollywood or other professions. The 31-year-old actor has noticed “white mediocrity” being celebrated, which is a luxury that does not exist for Black people since they must be “absolutely flawless” to even get a sliver of attention.
“We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing,” Gatwa said. “So, yeah, I think I’m just learning now like, ‘You are allowed to be loved.’ You don’t have to be excellent or aspire to that term, ‘Black excellence.’ What the hell?”

Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black Doctor in the (very) long-running “Doctor Who” series, did not get here without a fight. Gatwa recalled to Attitude magazine how some viewers were “so angry” about his casting, “something so inconsequential.”
It’s actually quite consequential, but in a good way.
“We do see a shift happening in casting, in positions of power and in the status quo,” Gatwa said. “I mean, not a fast shift, things could tip over the other way a little bit quicker, but you see people kind of malfunctioning because things are changing.”
Things are changing for Gatwa personally as well. In his youth, the pressure he felt to “be excellent” was taxing — especially as “white mediocrity” was celebrated around him.

Most TV shows cling to their characters and actors, and an important cast member’s exit can even ruin the entire series’ viewership and ratings. That’s not the case with Doctor Who, the TV show that thrives on the reinvention of itself: its very concept has always been about constantly changing lead and supporting actors and moving forward without those pesky emotional attachments. That’s how this series goes.
And even 60 years later, it keeps going — with another big reinvention, of course.
Doctor Who Is All About Starting Over
Seeing how the first Doctor Who episode was aired on BBC1 in 1963, it’s amazing how resilient this series turned out to be. Doctor Who was revived and reinvented in 1996 by Fox; then, in 2005, by BBC One; and now, once again, by Disney Plus. Say what you will, but this TV show knows everything about starting over — and doing it...

One of the most beloved and long-running British Sci-Fi TV shows may be setting up the return of a fan-favorite character in a spin-off series on Disney+.
This has been the plan from the start, that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who production era will feature multiple spin-off series and movies.
The newest Doctor Who era has Ncuti Gatwa taking the reigns as the pivotal character in the show, aka Doctor Who, and bringing a new, fresh take.
This is what makes the Doctor Who universe last as long as it has, as every couple of years, the Doctor and other characters on the show will get a revamp with new actors. This also means that older stories and plots can be revisited with new ideas and even newer and sometimes old faces.

TV is not looking too shabby this week, not too shabby at all. BBC One has the second series of excellent Belfast-set crime drama Blue Lights, all episodes of which are available to stream on iPlayer now. Over on Netflix is excellent seven-part drama Baby Reindeer, an uncomfortably honest dramatisation of creator Richard Gadd’s real-life experience of being stalked. On Prime Video, there’s Fallout, which continues The Last of Us‘ trend of being a videogame-to-tv adaptation that’s actually, you know, good. Also on Netflix is moody, intoxicating psychological thriller Ripley, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr Ripley and starring Andrew Scott.
As well as all that, here’s a big look ahead to the new British drama coming up in 2024 and a whisper in your ear to watch Wunmi Mosaku in creepy new Brit mystery Passenger on ITV1, which is well worth a look.

The more companions, the merrier!
Varada Sethu has officially joined “Doctor Who” Season 2 as the new companion of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor — but she won’t be replacing current companion Millie Gibson, as previously reported.
In January, rumors swirled that Gibson, who made her debut as companion Ruby Sunday in the sci-fi show’s Christmas special, would not be returning for Season 2 after Gatwa was spotted filming with Sethu. However, it seems the three will take on time and space together in the second season, which is currently in production and slated to debut in 2025 on Disney+ worldwide and on the BBC in the U.K.
Sethu is best known for her role as Cinta Kaz in Disney+’s “Star Wars” spinoff “Andor.” She has also appeared in “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Annika” and “Strike Back.”

Ryan Gosling visited “The Tonight Show” ahead of his latest hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live” and spoke about his internet-breaking live performance of “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars last month. Asked by host Jimmy Fallon if it was an immediate yes when the Academy called him up to request he perform the “Barbie” original song live during the ceremony, Gosling said his answer was “100% no.”
“There’s a lot of ways that could go wrong,” Gosling said.
But the performance went very right. Gosling, bathed in pink lighting and wearing a sparkling pink suit and pink gloves, started singing “I’m Just Ken” while in the audience sitting behind Margot Robbie. He then made his way to the stage, where he was joined by Mark Ronson and Slash on guitars. His fellow Ken actors Simu Liu, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir joined the armada of backup dancers behind Gosling.

Over the years, the Doctor has met all kinds of legendary cultural and societal figureheads across his Tardis travels: Vincent Van Gogh, Charles Dickens, Rosa Parks, William Shakespeare, and Agatha Christie, to name but a few. But he’s never met the Fab Four – until now. The new series of Doctor Who – the first full series to feature Ncuti Gatwa’s take on the iconic Time Lord, with showrunner Russell T Davies returning to the (galli)fray – will feature an episode titled 'The Devil's Chord', in which the Doctor rock out with The Beatles in Abbey Road. And it’s an idea that’s been a long time coming.
As Davies tells Empire – in a major new joint interview with Gatwa to celebrate the show’s latest regeneration – the notion of doing a Beatles episode has always hit a certain stumbling block. But, that in itself became a source of inspiration.

US BritBox recently debuted the second season of Jimmy McGovern‘s anthology prison drama Time, set in a women’s facility. The new story features three women facing punishment for various offenses with a focus on how the British prison system is set up to fail the women it is supposed to reform.
Viewers throughout three episodes follow the stories of Orla (Jodie Whittaker), a single mom who is suddenly thrown into prison for a minor offense, Abby (Tamara Lawrence) who is serving a life sentence for murder, and Kelsey (Bella Ramsey) who is charged with drug trafficking while facing addiction and pregnancy.
Den of Geek spoke to Jodie Whittaker about how Orla’s struggles differ wildly from the trials of a Time Lord and about the Doctor Who moment of which she feels proudest.

If you thought Ruby Sunday's (Millie Gibson) declaration that one of the situations she and The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) find themselves in for Doctor Who's new season is "so Bridgerton" was the only reference to the Netflix period romp, you would be mistaken. Because Queen Charlotte herself, Golda Rosheuvel, is also among the guest stars for the new season.
Rosheuvel will appear in the first episode of the latest run, playing a character named Jocelyn who collides with our dynamic duo. "It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season," says showrunner Russell T. Davies.
And that's not the only news to break from the show. We also now know the episode titles for the whole of the new season. Davies...

It’s the Rani. It’s always the Rani. Even when it definitely isn’t the Rani, well, it’s secretly the Rani.
That’s the running gag in the Doctor Who fandom every time it’s called upon to speculate about who or whatever is behind Something Mysterious and Evil happening on the show. If it’s not the Master, then it’s malevolent Time Lady the Rani. Monsters stealing time, cracks in the universe, milk going off even when kept in an adequately refrigerated container? It’s naughty scientist the Rani (even though it very rarely is).
As played by Kate O’Mara in season 22 and season 24, the character is a classic but little-seen Who villain whose reappearance on TV fans live both in eager anticipation and utter dread of. Four-part 1987 story “Time and the Rani” you see, is not popular.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies foresees a gloomy future for the BBC, saying its end is “undoubtedly on its way”.
Russell T Davies knows a thing or two about the inner workings of the BBC, given that he’s worked at the corporation since the start of his career in the mid-1980s.
Now the showrunner on Doctor Who, Davies has some gloomy thoughts to share on the future of the BBC. Talking on the podcast They Like To Watch (as picked up by Deadline), Davies talked about the need to make the latest series of Doctor Who a co-production with Disney+, and added that such a deal was necessary in order to secure the show’s long-term future. The reason being that the BBC itself may be reaching the end of its life.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has issued some doom-and-gloom thinking behind why the hit sci-fi series needed to partner with Disney+.
Speaking to the They Like to Watch podcast, the storied British showrunner declared that the BBC is “somehow, surely, undoubtedly on its way out in some shape or form,” and additional cash and partners were therefore necessary for Doctor Who.
“I had already said in interviews that I think Doctor Who will have to become a co-pro, there’s no way the BBC is going to fund that,”he said. “You’ve also got to look in the long term at the end of the BBC, which is somehow, surely, undoubtedly on its way in some shape or form. What is Doctor Who going to do then? You have to prepare for that.”

Ncuti Gatwa’s first series of Doctor Who is almost here – and to remind us of this, the BBC have released a full trailer.
If there’s one thing to take away from the trailer for the new series, it is this – Russell T Davies is putting every penny of the higher budget up on the screen.
With the premiere of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series just weeks away, the marketing campaign is beginning to ramp up. First, we got the welcome news that former showrunner and Doctor Who’s most prolific writer Steven Moffat has penned an episode for the new series, which is described as “Hitchcockian” in tone. His episode was directed by Julie-Anne Robinson.

We've known for a few days now that Doctor Who, with Ncuti Gatwa at the controls of the Tardis as the Fifteenth Doctor, will be back on our screens on 11 May. Doctor Who is one of the longest-running science fiction franchises in the world of entertainment. From 1963 to now, the franchise has only grown bigger and turned better with each successive actor playing the time-traveling extraterrestrial. Till now there have been 14 actors who have portrayed the eccentric character.

The Doctor is back in every sense of the word.
During Doctor Who's classic run, the Doctor often approached new adventures with child-like curiosity. But the 2005 reboot offered a darker, more depressed Doctor who had become worn down by the Time War and the companions he couldn't save.
Not anymore. Disney+ has just released a new trailer for Doctor Who Season 14, and it suggests that Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor will be a larger-than-life character who approaches life with confidence and a sense of fun.
The Christmas special already introduced the newer, more lighthearted version of the Doctor, including him and Ruby Sunday singing a show tune to distract some evil goblins that wanted to eat Ruby's new foster sister.
It was campy as hell, but that was what Doctor Who needed. Season 14 will pick up where the special left off and combine humor and fun with more serious undertones.

Goodbye, upside-down dustbins with toilet plungers glued on the front, hello, CGI dinosaurs! Okay, so "Doctor Who" has had CGI dinosaurs before (plus some fun old-school puppet dinos in the Jon Pertwee-era adventure "Invasion of the Dinosaurs"), but it's clear from this new trailer for the upcoming season of "Doctor Who" that returning showrunner Russell T.
