After playing his college ball for the Gamecocks at the University of South Carolina, Rico Dowdle signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He became the team’s third-string running back behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Dowdle appeared in more than a dozen games, but injuries kept him off the field in 2021 and most of 2022.

He became Pollard’s backup in 2023 after Elliott was released and on March 18, 2024, Dowdle re-signed with the Cowboys. Now with Pollard having left to play for the Tennessee Titans and Elliott back in Dallas but not taking on as much of a workload as he used to, Dowdle has finally been able to shine as the team’s running back. In comments likely to encounter some push-back, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters on a conference call Thursday that the league is planning games in stadiums with fans this fall.

According to multiple media reports and accounts on social media, Goodell also said training camps will open on time this summer, meaning all players would report to camps by July 28.

Goodell said the plan is to “get ready for games at our stadiums and to engage our fans both in stadiums and through our media partners,” according to an account of the call by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Measures such as seat covers and extensive testing are among the precautions planned.

Officials earlier Thursday scrubbed the annual Hall of Fame game and enshrinement ceremony. They are considering jettisoning some of the other pre-season games, accelerating a move already under way as the league prepares to adopt a 17-game regular season and a shorter pre-season.

“Multiple players” for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have tested positive for Covid-19, a pair of league insiders revealed Monday. The league has yet to comment on the reports.

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted Friday that the league should have listened more closely in the past to players who complained about racism.

Goodell issued an Instagram video today on behalf of the NFL after several star players issued their own video, Stronger Together, on Thursday, asking for the league to condemn racism and support its black players.

The league responded a day later.

“We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” Goodell said. “It has been a difficult time for our country. In particular, black people in our country. First, my condolences to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and all the families who have endured police brutality.”

Several of the most prominent stars in the National Football League posted a video demanding the league condemn racism and admit it was wrong to silence protesting players.

The video comes after the death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes, after Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. Organizations around the country, including the NFL, shared statements of support after Floyd’s death.

However, some people viewed the NFL’s statement as insincere, after quarterback Colin Kaepernick faced backlash for kneeling during football games to protest police brutality and the oppression of Black rights.

“It’s been 10 days since George Floyd was brutally murdered. How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players? What will it take? For one of us to be murdered by police brutality? What if I was George Floyd?” the players ask in the video.

For the first time in three years, Tom Brady isn’t the top-selling player in the National Football League.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes bumped the 42-year-old Brady from the top spot this past season, cementing his status as the face of football, Sportico has learned.
