The end of 2020 and the start of 2021 have featured a diverse and dynamic collection of cinema-related books. Let’s start with two of these, a biography of director Mike Nichols and an oral history of Dazed and Confused, which qualify as movie-lover must-owns.
Mike Nichols: A Life by Mark Harris (Penguin Press)
Will there be a finer, more compelling biography in 2021 than Mike Nichols: A Life? I tend to doubt it, as Mark Harris’ study of the career of the Berlin-born, Nichols-and-May comic genius turned Broadway and Hollywood heavyweight rivals the author’s previous modern classics: Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood and Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War. Nichols was the subject of a fine oral history in 2019 (covered here), but A Life adds extraordinary levels of detail. There are moments that are simply unforgettable. These...

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

The cast was last dealing with major personal issues, including Matt Brown's struggles with sobriety and Ami Brown's cancer battle. Matt recently returned to rehab for the second time and his progress will be covered during Season 9, according to Radar. "Everyone is interested to see if he is able to overcome his [alcohol] addiction," an insider said. The Discovery star had allegedly already relapsed by the time the footage was shot for the finale, the source added. It's all about tough love. Alaskan Bush People star Matt Brown has officially entered rehab for the second time after suffering an alcohol abuse relapse. And apparently, a family intervention helped motivate him to make his health and well-being a top priority. “Matt’s decision to enter treatment came after a family intervention,” a source tells Radar, a few days after the 36-year-old voluntarily checked himself into a 90-day inpatient program. “Matt was told he could either go and get help, or he could face losing his contract with the show, as well as the support of his family." Matt has reportedly spoken with his brothers since and said that he's doing Ok, despite everything that's going on. “He is very tired and worn down, but he will be alright," the insider added. Matt Brown, one of the children of Ami and Billy Brown on Alaskan Bush People, has gone through quite a bit over the past couple of years. While he is still filming the show with his family, it’s clear now that Brown was struggling with some personal demons. Back in 2016, Brown revealed that he had been struggling with alcohol, and he found himself losing control of his drinking. He later opened up about his rehab stay, telling People magazine that he learned a lot about himself, his strengths, and his weaknesses in his 35-day rehab stay. “I could see […]

There's nothing like family. Ami and Billy Brown revealed they completely support Matt Brown returning to rehab for the second time. The Alaskan Bush People stars are missing their son already, but they are proud of him for taking the necessary steps to get help. “It’s hard not having one of my babies here with us. He was so strong for me, and I want to be strong for him," Ami said to People, while addressing how Matt was her rock during her battle with lung cancer. “We miss him terribly, but we’d rather lose him from home for a little while than lose him forever," Billy added. "We just want him to do what he needs to do to get better.” View this post on Instagram Matt Brown is looking to Friday's premiere! Unfortunately, it seems like things aren't going too well for Alaskan Bush People star Matt Brown lately. The good news, though, is that he's ready to get things back on track — and he's heading to rehab to do that. This isn't his first stint, either. Back in the spring of 2016, he went to rehab for the first time, and now he's heading back. The reality star opened up to People about his battle with substance abuse and his decision to get help once again. "I struggle with substance abuse, and after a year of ups and downs, I decided to return to treatment," Matt shared. "I’m really grateful for everyone’s support and hope to have my life back on track soon." About his first rehab stay, he continued, "I could see myself spiraling... I was more withdrawn. I was slower. Things didn’t excite me the way they used to.

Alaskan Bush People is a reality series that’s never shy of dramatic moments, but one of the most shocking situations faced by the Brown family occurred while cameras weren’t rolling.
Eldest son Matt Brown, 34, was alone in Brownton approximately two months ago when an explosion raised red flags for the show’s production team, who had gone home for the day hours earlier.
“We got a medic on the way. We’re on the way right now,” a production member is heard saying on Wednesday’s episode of Abp.

"Alaskan Bush People" star Matt Brown needed 9 staples in his head after an explosion in his fridge landed him in the hospital. Our sources in Alaska tell us the accident happened Tuesday night in Matt's Hoonah, Ak crib. Apparently, he'd filled a mason jar with gunpowder and cannon fuse, and stored it in his fridge. Doesn't seem like the smartest move, but if you haven't seen the show ... the Browns march to the beat of their own drum.
