We’re leaving Las Vegas.
CinemaCon 2024 is over — time for studios to go out and prove their pitches at the box office. Based on what we saw, or really what we didn’t see, that will be an uphill battle.
First, let’s take a moment to appreciate the folks and films that showed up. Arguably, the biggest star to attend CinemaCon was Kevin Costner. The cynical point of view? He was pitching not one but two “Horizon” films to theater owners — and simultaneously pitching third and fourth installments to Warner Bros. Plus, Costner received a trophy (the CinemaCon Visionary Award), for which WB execs shooed him offstage just to call him back up. Kinda silly. Speaking of WB execs and no-shows, if David Zaslav was in town, he didn’t come on stage.
Jeff Goldblum did, as did his fellow “Wicked” co-stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh.

Less than 24 hours after unveiling exclusive Wicked footage in Las Vegas, filmmaker Jon M. Chu found his way into the spotlight of another CinemaCon stage inside Caesars Palace, this time for a special luncheon in his honor at which he revealed secrets about filming the two-part epic musical.
“It was pretty magical last night,” Chu told The Hollywood Reporter’s co-editor-in-chief Nekesa Mumbi Moody, who moderated a fireside chat with the filmmaker after he was presented a trophy for cultural impact in filmmaking (by his In the Heights star Ariana Greenblatt). Chu has been in the editing room while managing a full household of four young children, so he said that being in Las Vegas where he could sleep and hang out with others, “I’m, like, ‘Let’s go.’”

Jon M. Chu revealed it was “heartbreaking” and “very hurtful” for him when he learned his 2021 musical “In the Heights” was being released in theaters and on streaming via HBO Max on the same day.
Speaking to a crowd of exhibitors at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas on Thursday, Chu lamented the “Project Popcorn” campaign put in place by former Warner Media CEO Jason Kilar back in 2021, in which Warner Bros. took its entire theatrical slate for the year, including films like “In the Heights,” “Dune,” and “The Matrix Resurrections,” and put them in theaters and on streaming day-and-date, all as a means to drive subscribers to HBO Max.
When he was asked how “In the Heights” prepared him for thinking about his next film “Wicked,” another movie musical adaptation, this time for Universal, he said it made him realize the importance of theatrical.

Based on the book by Gregory Maguire, the hit Broadway stage musical "Wicked" opened on October 30, 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre, and has been running there ever since. It recently surpassed "Cats" to become the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history, although it has a long way to go to supplant "The Lion King" as the third-longest. The musical is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz," depicting the Wicked Witch of the West as a young green-skinned woman named Elphaba whose reputation has been wildly misunderstood. The show won three Tonys upon its release, and the accompanying soundtrack album won an Emmy. One might say that "Wicked" is very ... Popular.

Universal ended its CinemaCon presentation with Wicked last year, and they continued to beat the drum for director Jon M. Chu’s feature take of the Broadway musical with a colorful spectacle. Every attendee at Caesars Colosseum was given a faux tulip that lit up in varying colors, in particular pink and green, creating a great visual before Jeff Goldblum aka the Wizard took the stage to introduce Chu and producer Marc Platt.
Chu regaled: “I was a Silicon Valley kid, and as a matter of luck, I was there when Wicked was workshopped in San Francisco. I’ll never forget it; it imprinted on me permanently.”
He was joined by Michelle Yeoh and Jonathan Bailey. Yeoh praised Chu for casting her in roles in which the filmmaker “knows her so well.”
But the big surprise came when the witches themselves, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, stepped on stage.

“Get ready for a wild night,” host Zooey Deschanel improvised, as she waited for the starry crowd to take their seats inside the tented dinner held in the backyard of a sprawling Beverly Hills estate on Tuesday. Whoa! A new Matrix movie is in the works, with The Cabin in the Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard sorting red and blue pills for another chapter in the legendary action science-fiction franchise Lana and Lilly Wachowski created. Obviously, Warner Bros. is the studio with Lana Wachowski as an executive producer. Goddard is dialing in as the project’s director and writer. However, it remains uncertain if Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will return for the next series installment.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery...

Felicity Jones and Jonathan Bailey are no longer attached to star in Simon Amstell’s comedy “Maria,” Variety can confirm.
The movie is currently on pause after cast scheduling issues were followed by last year’s Hollywood strikes, although a source says Amstell is in talks to revive the project, which was first launched at Cannes two years ago.
Jones was set to lead the feature, playing a woman called Maria who was struggling with her age and a difficult relationship with her terminally-ill father. According to the logline, Maria then embarked on a questionable relationship with her stepbrother Raffy.
“Bridgerton’s” Jonathan Bailey was lined up to play Maria’s boyfriend while Jason Isaacs was cast as her father.
Variety understands the film, which was due to go into production in 2022, hit its first road bump when Bailey pulled out in order to star in another project. While Isaacs remained on board,...

There isn’t much dialogue in Anthony Chen’s 2023 drama film, Drift. For most of its runtime, it remains extremely quiet—so much so that it tends to get on your nerves to some extent. The big reveal in the end is an absolute gut punch, which practically elevates the narrative. Yet, so many things remain half-baked here, which is not exactly a good sign. There’s nothing wrong with not revealing too much information and letting the audience connect the dots, but the amount of information this film withholds from us is quite frustrating and only leaves us confused. One might argue that Drift is more of a character study of Cynthia Erivo’s Jacqueline than a film focused on finding out what really happened to her, but that doesn’t really justify the really bland narrative that mostly depends on the performance of Erivo and a spirited Alia Shawkat.

Cynthia Erivo’s mother was her “biggest resource” when she was preparing for ‘Drift’.The 37-year-old actress plays Jacqueline, a woman striving to survive on a Greek island after fleeing the Liberian civil war, and she turned to her mom Edith – who was displaced at the age of 15 during Nigeria’s Biafran War in the 1960s – to find a connection with her character. She told Empire magazine: “I used her as my biggest resource.“She would talk about the fear she felt, about how she and her siblings didn’t know if they would be able to find food or shelter at any time.” And during the shoot, Cynthia forced herself to feel as uncomfortable as Jacqueline would have done. She said:” At night, you let the cold, the dark, the wind and the sounds affect you so you can do something that’s completely truthful.“When you’re cold,...

Music artist Lizzo (real name: Melissa Viviane Jefferson) is one of the most influential artists who rose to fame with the release of her third studio album in 2019: Cuz I Love You. The artist’s 2017 single Truth Hurts became a sleeper hit two years after its release and topped the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the longest-leading solo by a female rapper.
The artist, due to her weight, has been the subject of constant trolling online, but she decided to use the opportunity and advocate for plus-size women, and she has faced a lot of challenges in doing so. She has expressed over the years how she feels constantly dragged down just because she doesn’t fit in the standards of an ideal woman body type. Lizzo is done with online haters.
“I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet,” the Emmy- and Grammy-winning artist wrote in an Instagram post shared Friday afternoon. “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”
The 35-year-old continued by stating that she’s constantly finding herself up against “lies being told about me for clout and views,” being the butt of the joke “every single time because of how I look” and having her character picked apart by strangers. She closed her emotional post with the words, “I quit” and a peace sign. It’s unclear if she meant she was quitting Instagram or all of her social platforms,...

It's an incredibly intense and honest interview and it can be found from 24:11 - 38:18 (approx). Then Evans returns to the pod after a long absence to talk about his role in Our Son, in which he plays a gay man going through a painful divorce, and playing The Crystal Maze with Daniel Levy. Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode in which they tackle a vaguely-Easter-themed Mount Rushmore question, discuss the storm over Late Night With The Devil...

Stephen Colbert’s sit-down with Presidents Biden, Obama and Clinton at last night’s fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall proved to be every bit the draw the Biden campaign had hoped for.
According to campaign officials, the sold-out event raised a record-setting $26 million-plus for Biden’s reelection campaign.
Colbert’s on-stage discussion with the three presidents was at turns both serious and funny, with each warning of the possible perils of a second Trump presidency. In the photo-op of the night, Colbert, Clinton and Obama joined Biden in wearing his trademark aviator sunglasses.
Tickets to the fundraiser, which also featured appearances from Mindy Kaling, Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele, ranged in price from $225 up to $500,000 a seat, with those contributing at higher levels offered the opportunity to have their photo taken together with all three Democratic presidents.

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Any Andrew Garfield performance is to be cherished – the British actor never fails to deliver, bringing emotion and commitment every single time. And his next role will be a different kind of expression than we’re used to from the star. He’s leading the impeccable voice cast of Audible’s new audio drama production of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984, playing the role of Winston Smith as he navigates the repressive society governed by Big Brother. Empire has an exclusive early peek at the audio drama, with a clip that sees Winston being confronted by the terror that awaits those going into Room 101. Give it a listen here:
Beyond Garfield’s Winston, you also heard Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, with Cynthia Erivo as Winston’s romantic counterpart Julia. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the cast here – also in the production you’ll find Tom Hardy...

Biden’s reelection campaign has heavily promoted the Radio City Music Hall gathering, which will include musical performances by Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Lizzo, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele, among others.
Around 5,000 are expected to attend the event, while the campaign also has been raising smaller-dollar contributions via an online contest in which participants could win a trip to New York and a photo with the three presidents. Cynthia Erivo in Drift
Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s fourth feature, Drift, continues his interest in the archetypal ‘outsider.’ The story centres on Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo), a young refugee who arrives on a Greek island. Mother’s Day weekend 2019 marked a turning point in the young life of Madhuri Shekar.
It all started two years before with a phone call from a woman named Kate Navin, then head of theater for Audible. Navin said she’d recently been armed with money to develop original works from emerging play- wrights, and she was calling to offer Shekar, just a year out of Juilliard, the chance to write. The only catch: Shekar’s play would have to be crafted as an audio-only production.
Shekar’s answer to this challenge was “Evil Eye,” a 100-minute potboiler that revolves around daily telephone conversations between a mother in India and a daughter in Los Angeles. The finished play was released on Audible in May 2019. For Shekar, the impact on her career was immediate. Within weeks, she was negotiating a deal with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Blumhouse for the movie version...

Lest we forget, a side effect of the SAG-AFTRA strike was red carpets being rolled up for four months — but not before Cardi B shut down the Met Ball in Chenpeng and Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt hit the London premiere (an hour early, so the cast could attend before the strike began) in Alexander McQueen, as selected by Jessica Paster. Post-strike, stars like Hunter Schafer, decked out in ethereal Prada as styled by Dara, came back shining more brightly than ever at the Golden Globes. And who doesn’t love a Hollywood icon comeback? Anthony Chen's slow-burn character study is essentially a showcase for its star Cynthia Erivo, who after scene stealing turns in the likes of Widows and Bad Times At The El Royale and her lead performance in Harriet, proves she can not only carry a film but lift it emotionally beyond the script.
Based on the book by Alexander Maksik and adapted by the author and Susanne Farrell for the screen, Erivo plays Jacqueline, a Liberian refugee, whose experience on a Greek holiday island is far from a sun-kissed getaway. A liminal space already, thanks to all those holidaymakers coming and going, she exists in an even more precarious state. In the here and now, she is on the fringes, stealing sugar packets to keep herself going and olive oil as a way to generate a bit of cash by offering tourists foot massages on the beach. But Jacqueline is also emotionally.

"Wicked" began its life as a playful, lore-rich 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which imagined deep backstories and complex relationships between the characters from "The Wizard of Oz." By Maguire's imagining, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West was merely misunderstood and marginalized. In 2003, lyricist Stephen Schwartz and dramatist Winnie Holzman adapted Maguire's novel into a Broadway musical that almost instantly became a runaway hit. "Wicked" won three Tonys, and had since set up camp on Broadway, becoming one of the longest-running shows in the history of the Great White Way. As of this writing, "Wicked" has surpassed "Cats" in number of performances.
