Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which recently wrapped production after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes. This film will be bringing popular video game character Johnny Cage to the screen, with Karl Urban of Dredd, Star Trek, and The Boys taking on the role. Despite Urban’s established awesomeness, he was an unexpected choice for Johnny Cage, and there are some fans who have let it be known that they would have chosen someone else to play the part. We’ll have to wait and see how it turned out, but one thing we know right now is that Urban had a great time working on the movie, calling it “most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film!”

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Garner had taken to X last week to announce that filming had wrapped for the film, which according to Garner, won’t have a trailer out just yet.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which started filming at the end of June last year… then had to shut down production when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit a couple weeks later. That strike came to an end in November, and filming resumed on Mortal Kombat 2 very soon after. Now filming has wrapped, and we know this because Max Huang, who plays Kung Lao in these movies, shared pictures from the wrap party! You can check them out at the bottom of this article, along with some images producer Todd Garner shared to social media during the production.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.
“This is not true. We are filming before then,” Garner teases.
He writes in a follow-up tweet, “I promise I will keep the Mk Kommunity posted as soon as I have info on start date, etc. Everyone else is just speculating… or posting for clicks.”

The release of Mortal Kombat 1 is just around the corner, and it was confirmed today that Megan Fox has lent her voice to Nitara. The vampire comes from the realm of Vaeternus and joins the fight to protect her race. You can check out a gruesome gameplay video of Nitara in action below, which also features Megan Fox talking about joining the Mortal Kombat franchise.
“She comes from this weird realm, she is a type of vampire creature,” Megan Fox said in the video. “She’s evil but she’s also good. She’s trying to save her people. I really like her. She’s a vampire which obviously resonates for whatever reason. It’s cool to be in the game, you know? Because I’m not really just voicing it, it’ll be like she’s kind of me.“

A couple weeks ago, Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid rounded out the cast of the sequel – which is apparently simply titled Mortal Kombat II. Last weekend, we saw a picture of several cast members in a restaurant together. And now Ludi Lin (who plays Liu Kang in these new films) took to Instagram to reveal that filming has officially started! He shared pictures of a clapperboard and his salad, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Producer James Wan revealed last night on Ig that filming is officially underway on Mortal Kombat 2, which has Simon McQuoid returning to the director’s seat from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist,” “Moon Knight”).
Martyn Ford (“The Sandman”), Desmond Chiam (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) and Damon Herriman (House of Wax, The Nightingale) signed on a few weeks ago to play Shao Kahn, Edenian King Jerrod, Queen Sindel, and Netherrealm demon Quan Chi respectively.
It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.
Newcomers to the sequel also include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
Plot details remain scarce for the sequel, though the new cast additions continue to signal a bigger, bloodier affair packed with fatalities.

Johnny Cage is an action movie star and martial artist who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. The character didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, but a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. It was announced earlier this year that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. I’m excited to see the actor in costume for the first time, but I have no doubt that he’s going to knock the role out of the park.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Filming on this follow-up is expected to begin soon (unless the writers strike causes a delay), and over the last month and a half McQuoid has been steadily building up his cast. The Boys star Karl Urban has been cast to play Johnny Cage; Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to play Princess Kitana; and Tati Gabrielle (You) is taking on the role of Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana. Now Deadline reports that four more actors have joined the cast, filling the roles of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel, Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, and Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

A sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 is on the way, and The Wrap reports tonight that Karl Urban (“The Boys”) is in final talks to join the cast as Johnny Cage.
The Wrap reminds, “Johnny Cage was introduced in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. Johnny Cage is depicted as an action movie star with an extensive martial arts background. He is often characterized as a swashbuckling, Hollywood fighting movie star who places great importance on his image and consistently behaves in a cool manner.”
The star of Amazon’s hit series “The Boys,” Karl Urban turns 50 years old next month, so this particular take on the classic Mortal Kombat character is sure to be different than expected. Many fans had been lobbying for WWE superstar The Miz to play Cage in the upcoming sequel, but Urban’s casting will bring a whole new facet to the character.

Between the live action reboot of Mortal Kombat and my growing appreciation of the animated Batman films it was pretty much a given that I would check out another of Warner’s animated offerings, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms begins with a couple fleeing through deserted streets before being confronted by a trio of nasty looking creatures. They kill the couple but Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell; Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) arrives in time to save their baby whom the mother names Liu Kang with her dying breath.
We’re barely a minute in and already there’s a decapitation and a pair of eyes exploding from their sockets.

Mma fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt him down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) at the direction of Jax (Mehcad Brooks), a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Stunt coordinator Kyle Gardiner worked with director Simon McQuoid and fight choreographer Chan Griffin to deliver the extreme fights in the “Mortal Kombat” movie. Combining signature moves with well-structured action, the stunt team had plenty to work with for this action-packed fantasy flick.
Free from the PG-13 boundaries applied to 1995’s enjoyably campy Paul W.S. Anderson-directed adaptation, this R-rated 2021 effort puts much more emphasis on the brutal nature of these bouts, complete with the gory fatalities this gaming franchise is known for.
With over a dozen combatants involved in nearly 20 different individual fights, it was important to add a unique element to every battle to keep from seeing the same thing over and over. As Gardiner explains, “There was a mood board for each fight, and it created a tone and a level of violence Simon was after, keeping the fights from blending into each other.”
It takes research to plan out any stunt,...

Brutality
James Corden tested his might — and his voiceover mettle — last night, when the CBS late-night host played a ’90s version of himself laying down the vocals for that “Mortal Kombat” techno track.
At first, he got the lyrics right — but the energy was way off. Then the delivery was terrible.
And then, following some direct direction from his producer, Corden fully blanked on the words. It’s one line, dude — check the poster directly behind you. Or the one to the right of you. Or the lyrics sheet on the music stand in front of you. Or literally just commit two words totaling 12 letters to memory.
Finally, Corden got it right. And then he destroyed the place.
Fatality.
Watch the video above.
For the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” movie reboot, composer Benjamin Wallfisch wrote an Edm (electronic dance music) remix of the original song titled “Techno Syndrome 2021.”
It’s a banger — listen to it here.

“Test your might.” These are the words of a minigame in the original Mortal Kombat arcade fighter from 1992. They were meant to signal an interlude between the simple pleasures of digitized sprites spilling buckets of blood. Yet they’ve also become synonymous with a franchise that’s arguably the most popular video game fighter of all-time. The phrase is also a pretty apt description for the various filmmakers who’ve attempted the challenge of taming this crazy dragon on screen.
More than any other video game series, Mortal Kombat has seen a plethora of live-action adaptations, from Hollywood movies to syndicated television. This weekend marks another milestone in that history, too, with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s hotly anticipated Mortal Kombat reboot opening in theaters and premiering on HBO Max. It’s the third Mortal Kombat movie released under the New Line banner,...

It’s kind of weird that the thing at the center of the video game never happened
No matter who you picked to win in “Mortal Kombat” you were wrong. But that’s solely because, at the end of the day, the Mortal Kombat tournament wasn’t actually part of “Mortal Kombat.” And that’s a little weird, right?
Now, to be fair, most (we missed you Johnny Cage) of the fan-favorite characters did appear and they did fight. Kano (Josh Lawson) had his laser beam eye, Jax (Mehcad Brooks) had his metal arms, Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) had his deadly freezing abilities, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) had her iconic pink energy blasts. All the pieces were there, and there were definitely clear winners. (Rip Outworlders). They just didn’t fight each other in the traditional proceedings

(Warning: Major spoilers ahead for “Mortal Kombat.” Read on at your own risk)
There are a Lot of fighters in “Mortal Kombat,” each with their own unique ability that proves useful in saving Earth. But we need to talk about the ending for one in particular: Hanzo Hasashi, better known as Scorpion.
“Mortal Kombat” is centered on Cole Young, an Mma fighter who finds himself thrust into a supernatural fight to save the world. He bears an ancient dragon-shaped marked, signifying his role as one of Earthrealm’s champions in an ancient tournament known as Mortal Kombat.
The thing about Cole’s mark though, is that he was born with it. Every other fighter he encounters — Jax, Kano, Sonya Blade — has taken the mark from someone else by killing that person. Why is Cole different? Because his mark was passed down through his bloodline.

The Mortal Kombat movie may be one of the first true blockbusters of 2021, but for millions of fans of the games, it’s also another chance to “get it right.” Sure, 1995’s is a somewhat underrated live-action adaptation of a video game, but its irredeemable sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, left many fans doubting that we’d ever see another big-budget live-action Mortal Kombat movie much less one that comes close to capturing what makes the games special.
You can read our review of the film itself for a better look at how close the new movie comes to accomplishing that lofty goal, but suffice to say, the movie makes a lot of changes to the games it’s based on. Some of those changes were almost inevitable given the transition between storytelling mediums, while others are more…debatable.

Jessica McNamee was so determined to play Sonya Blade that she kept making self-tapes until she found that winning formula. While there have been many iterations of Blade since her introduction in 1992’s Mortal Kombat video game by Midway, McNamee’s decision to add a bit of levity to the character proved to be a deciding factor. In Simon McQuoid’s R-rated relaunch of Mortal Kombat, McNamee’s Blade is still a former U.S. Special Forces soldier and partner/friend of Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), but she also introduces Lewis Tan’s Cole Young (and the audience) to the world ...

I’m not usually one to look up the MPAA ratings for movies. But there came a point while watching the new Mortal Kombat that I got curious. A point sometime after hearing Kano, the notoriously aggro Australian mercenary, call someone a “fucking idiot” for what felt the like 50th time, but before the part where we see a surge of power bore a hole so cleanly through that someone’s flesh that their spine — dripping with a few gorgeous chunks of meat — is all that remains of their torso in the end.

The latest big-screen adaptation of the game isn’t so cinematic
“Mortal Kombat” the video game franchise is a lot of things, but it is absolutely not visually bland. Those games, whether we’re talking about the fights themselves or the story scenes, have flair. They have style. They don’t look boring.
It’s a big shame, then, that while it nails just about everything else, the new “Mortal Kombat” adaptation has all the visual flair of a CW TV show. And that complete lack of style kinda killed the movie for me.
There are moments scattered throughout the film that are definite crowd pleasers, that even made me hoot and holler a little bit. When characters declared their victories after doing something horrible to their foes, it always made me laugh. When Scorpion made his big entrance in the middle of a major battle, I let out an excited yelp.

As someone who has been a longtime apologist for Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 Mortal Kombat adaptation, I’ll be the first to admit that considering it has been nearly 26 years since that first film hit the big screen, we were definitely due for a new live-action take on the Mortal Kombat universe. And holy hell, does this new Mk deliver up a flawless victory—there’s more world-building in this new Mortal Kombat in the first five minutes than we get in the entirety of Mk (1995), and between the jaw-droppingly great action set pieces and a fantastic ensemble that does a brilliant job of bringing these iconic characters to life, I absolutely loved everything that director Simon McQuoid, as well as the film’s screenwriters Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, were able to bring to the table for Mortal Kombat (2021).
Simply put, this new Mortal Kombat kicks copious amounts of ass.

It was the gore as much as the gameplay that made the original “Mortal Kombat” such a success at the arcade, and while the 1995 New Line movie broke the curse on video game adaptations — following such bombs as “Street Fighter” and “Super Mario Bros.” earlier that decade — the film version did so by turning the koncept into a slick but kitschy action spectacular. While heavily indebted to Hong Kong cinema, the fluke hit (which made a whopping $122 million) hasn’t aged well, considering how much “The Matrix” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” transformed Hollywood fight scenes.
Now, “Mortal Kombat” gets the R-rated reboot its fans feel the property deserves, which entails being as graphic as the game was when it comes time for the pugilists to eliminate their opponents, whether that means ripping out their hearts or buzz-sawing them in twain with a razor-sharp hat. Such ruthless finishing moves may be the selling point here,...

CG strips martial-arts choreography of its impact, but it does allow for hilarious geysers of fake blood
Much has been made of the fact that 2021’s “Mortal Kombat,” the second feature-film adaptation of the popular video game, has an R rating — but strip away the exaggerated gore and the rough language, and you’re left with a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie with epic delusions. That’s not to say that this broad and silly spectacle doesn’t provide its share of goofy entertainment, but it may well not be the movie that fans of the game want it to be.
(To clarify: I’ve never played the game or seen the 1995 version that starred Christophe Lambert; for a fan’s perspective, check out this take by TheWrap’s Phil Owen..)

Warner Bros. and director Simon McQuoid pull off a daring, high-wire balancing act with their big screen take on Mortal Kombat. That is to say, it’s incredibly difficult to make a good, entertaining movie that stands on its own while at the same time remains faithful to source material with a rich, extensive history and passionate fanbase. Plus, it’s a video game movie.
Yet 2021’s Mortal Kombat is both a loving homage to the blood-soaked arcade classics that started it all and a savage, devilishly fun martial arts flick. The film is actually so effective in the latter regard that it transcends the “video game movie” category completely and should in all likelihood attract an audience of people who have never even played the games.
