Finn Wolfhard is counted among the most talented young actors right now. A breakout star of “Stranger Things”, he is known for more than just his acting chops. His signature curly mane became a character itself alongside his portrayal of Mike Wheeler.

But what many fans might not know is that those iconic curls weren’t entirely natural. While Wolfhard sported his own impressive locks throughout much of the series, there were times when hair extensions were used for the actor at such a young age. But the story behind these extensions is more than just a hairstyling choice – it’s actually quite amusing.

WME Independent is repping North America and multi-territory deals on “Transmazonia.” Both films are in post-production and will be teased by The Party Film Sales at the European Film Market where the company will unveil promo-reels.
Set in contemporary Tunisia, “Aicha” is inspired by true events and tells the story of Aya, a woman in her late 20s who lives with her parents, feeling trapped in a life without prospects. One day, she’s involved in a bus crash while commuting to work. As the sole survivor of the accident, she realizes it could be her chance to start a new life. She flees to Tunis under a new identity, but everything is soon compromised after she witnesses a police blunder.

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

With professional baggage that includes music video work for the likes of Björk, Panda Bear, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear, Isaiah Saxon has been painstakingly putting together The Legend of Ochi since October of 2021. Among the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Labs attendees back in 2018, due to the complex work involved in post, it’ll have been a long journey to completion for Saxon’s feature debut — animation takes time folks! Starring Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Finn Wolfhard and Helena Zengel, some scenes The Legend of Ochi were shot in Transylvania and other magical backdrops. Cinematographer Evan Prosofsky (who has worked on Sam Kuhn’s shorts films) was hired here.…...

MGM has acquired the rights to remake “System Crasher,” Nora Fingscheidt’s 2019 German drama, and set Channing Tatum to star in and produce the English-language take on the story, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap on Friday.
“System Crasher” premiered to acclaim out of Berlin and swept the German Film Awards, and it starred Helena Zengel as a 9-year-old girl with a traumatic past who acts out and drives everyone around her to despair, leading her to be labeled a “system crasher” as she bounces around from child service home to the next because of her wild behavior. But she soon meets a caring, but tough anger management coach who helps her on the road to recovery.
Tatum will star in the film that will also now be set in the U.S. and focus on childhood trauma, and Fingscheidt, who most recently directed “The Unforgiveable” with Sandra Bullock,...

Mike Mills’ critically-acclaimed indie drama “C’mon C’mon” explores the tenuous but transformational bond forged between radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his precocious 9-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman), when they are unexpectedly thrown together by Jesse’s mum, Viv (Gaby Hoffman) while she takes care of Jesse’s mentally-ill father Paul (Scoot McNairy). Norman has been singled out for praise for his performance and could well ride these rave reviews to an Oscar nomination.
As Carlos Aguilar from The Wrap observes: “In a tête-à-tête with Phoenix, Norman carves out a jaw-dropping turn from delicate mood swings and mischievous charm.” Other critics have been equally effusive about Norman’s work in Mills’ fourth narrative feature including Richard Brody of The New Yorker: “Norman, impulsive and spontaneous yet wondrously precise, is one of the great child actors. If it feels like we were just writing about the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards, well, that’s probably because they got pushed to later in 2021 than usual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That ceremony, the 27th of its kind, took place on April 4. That shift of the awards calendar is resulting in some changes to this year’s races as well.
The eligibility period for both films and television series, and their respective performers, this year is condensed — from March 1 to Dec. 31. Submissions for all categories were due Nov. 5, with balloting opening Dec. 6 and continuing through 5 p.m. Pt on Jan. 9. The 28th annual SAG Awards nominations will be announced Jan. 12 with final voting opening Jan. 19 and continuing through noon Pt on Feb. 25. The winners will be announced at the live ceremony on Feb. 27.
Ahead of all that, Variety highlights important ballot areas to keep your eye on when voting.

In “The Other Tom,” maternal impulse goes up against authoritarian guidance, and the face-off isn’t as simple or sentimental as you might expect. Co-directing for the first time with his personal and creative partner Laura Santullo, Uruguayan-Mexican director Rodrigo Plá brings his customary technical finesse and tonal restraint to a topical subject vulnerable to emotive, heavy-handed treatment. Debates and thinkpieces abound on the widespread medication of the so-called Adderall generation, but Plá and Santullo’s bruise-tender film avoids a dogmatic stance — even as Elena, gutsily played by newcomer Julia Chávez, has her mind firmly changed on the subject.
Her son Tom is a handful, often acting out and refusing to take the medication he’s been rigidly prescribed for his apparent attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. For Elena, her challenge is more than managing the boy, as depicted in a scene set at his ninth birthday party, when another mother asks,...

“Belfast” is coming on strong as one of the leading awards contenders of the year, with many prognosticators expecting it to show up in categories like Best Picture, Best Director and the acting categories. Four actors from the Kenneth Branagh-directed film are expected to be in play — Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds — all in the supporting categories. But what will become of the film’s star, Jude Hill? The 11-year-old actor is the only one being pushed for a lead acting nomination and while he isn’t quite in people’s predictions yet, one organization that could give him a major boost is the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

For the first time in decades, the Academy has merged sound editing and sound mixing into a single category because of persistent overlap, and this season offers five exemplary nominees: the experimental “Sound of Metal,” “Mank,” and “Soul,” the rugged western soundscape of “News of the World,” and the explosive sounds of World War II battleships in “Greyhound” (the latter two starring Tom Hanks).
But Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed portrays Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer losing his hearing, is the favorite to win the Oscar for its complexity and detail. Although the film was snubbed at the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, it rebounded to take the Cas sound mixing prize. This is a film about sound because of the way it explores deafness as a way of experiencing sound and vibration. Getting inside Ruben’s head creates the dichotomy between “omniscient sound and perspective sound,...

This season’s Oscar race for production design pits David Fincher’s mighty black-and-white “Mank” (the Adg period winner) against Florian Zeller’s mind-bending “The Father,” Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (the Adg fantasy winner), Paul Greengrass’ first western, “News of the World,” and the sweltering Chicago period trappings of George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
“Mank” is the favorite for meticulously recreating the world of washed up, alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), who struggles to churn out a first draft of “Citizen Kane.” Oscar-winning production designer Don Burt (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) had to think in terms of black-and-white design to authentically return to Hollywood’s Golden Age in the ’30s. Fortunately, set decorator Jan Pascale used the monochromatic filter on her iPhone for shooting set dressing tests, and that helped shape the palette of warm earth tones. Unable to shoot at the...

The cinematography race pits Joshua James Richards (“Nomadland”) against Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”), Phedon Papamichael (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Dariusz Wolski (“News of the World”), and Sean Bobbitt (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Of the five, only Papamichael has been previously nominated (for “Nebraska”). Although Messerschmidt won the coveted ASC award, Richards is the favorite for Chloé Zhao’s Best Picture frontrunner.
The momentum has been with Richards for “Nomadland” ever since he won Camerimage’s prestigious Golden Frog last year. In the recessionary road odyssey, the director’s go-to cinematographer offered a roving, naturalistic nod to Terrence Malick (with the Arri Alexa Mini), while capturing Frances McDormand’s journey through the landscapes of the American West in changing light. Magic hour was the time to capture her long walks alone (with the camera placed on the Ronin 2 gimbal).
In David Fincher’s “Mank,” Messerschmidt recreated a Golden Age of Hollywood in black-and-white.

James Newton Howard is no stranger to the Western. He composed the scores for Wyatt Earp and Hidalgo, but the music for News of the World required a different touch. “This may be a big Western, with big characters and landscapes,” Newton Howard says, “but it’s a much more introspective movie.” The story follows Captain Kidd (Tom Hanks), who agrees to deliver a girl, Johanna (Helena Zengel), to her only living relatives, after she was taken by the Kiowa people. Newton Howard, along with director Paul Greengrass and editor Billy Goldenberg, decided to start the score with the idea of a “broken consort” of musicians to represent the broken nature of the world and main characters. Here, Newton Howard describes his approach to writing a score to track a healing journey.

With tight races for Best Ensemble and Lead Actress, suspense was running high before the pre-taped hourlong SAG Awards show Sunday night — at least for those insiders who did not hear leaks of Thursday’s real-time winners.
As it turns out, the SAG Awards and Oscars may not sync up as easily as last year, when all the Ensemble nominees went on to win Oscars, along with all the SAG acting winners — Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”). This time, SAG was full of surprises that will shake up the Oscar race.
The evening’s big shocker was the double-whammy SAG Awards for not only the expected Best Male in a Leading Role winner Chadwick Boseman — but also his costar Viola Davis in the bigger-than-life, dazzling title role in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Boseman gave the performance of his life,...

The Screen Actors Guild Awards show took place on Sunday, April 4 as a one-hour celebration, which is shorter than the usual two-hour-plus telecast. See the full list of winners below.
This year’s SAG Awards highlighted and expanded on the show’s signature “I Am An Actor” stories through funny and intimate docuseries-inspired interviews, which were woven throughout the telecast. The show continued its longstanding tradition of honoring the outstanding performances of the past year with announcements in 13 categories.
Last year, all the SAG Ensemble nominees went on to win Academy Awards, including SAG’s big winner “Parasite,” which took home Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and International Feature for Bong Joon Ho at the Oscars. All the SAG acting winners repeated at the Academy Awards as well — Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”).

Sunday’s shortened one-hour show was pre-recorded — meaning the SAG-AFTRA winners were informed of their wins a few days before the telecast — and the acceptance speeches were also pre-taped. The changes were a Covid-era decision in order to protect the guild’s nominees and presenters....

The 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented on Sunday night, April 4, in an hour-long pre-taped ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But who will take home the coveted Actors in the six film categories? Scroll down for our complete odds in all categories, which were calculated by combining the predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users who placed their bets in our predictions center. Our projected winners are highlighted in gold.
Seesag Awards 2021 In Memoriam: Sunday’s special segment will honor Chadwick Boseman, Oliva de Havilland, Cicely Tyson and who else?
Our forecasts say that six different movies will win the six awards, but the coveted prize for the best ensemble cast is expected to go to “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” with “Minari” close behind. Those are the only two SAG ensemble nominees that also have Oscar nominations for Best Picture, and every SAG winner since “The Birdcage...

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will take place on Sunday in a scaled-down, pre-taped, one-hour ceremony, will probably tell us a few things we already know about this year’s awards races, and maybe a few things we don’t about a couple of tight races.
The chances that they can create turmoil in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor races are slim, but there’s a lot at stake in the two actress categories at the SAG Awards, and the opportunity for the guild to christen real front runners.
Carey Mulligan, Frances McDormand or Viola Davis? Maria Bakalova, Yuh-Jung Youn or Glenn Close? Those are confusing races at the moment, but they may be less confusing by 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
Then again, the SAG Awards can be a reliable Oscar predictor, but it’s also sometimes a lackluster one.

It’ll be a Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony like never before because Sunday’s show is not just over Zoom but it’ll be an hourlong pre-taped show. Will it give us any clarity on two unsettled Oscar races? Will the TV winners be the usual suspects? Will any winners leak? Our editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss that and more. Watch our predictions slugfest above.
In film, we agree on everything except the two female acting categories. Surprise, surprise. The SAG Awards have previewed nine of the last 10 Supporting Actress Oscar winners. And since the guild started giving out prizes in 1995, it has foreseen 69% of the eventual Oscar champs in this category. The nominees are often just as similarly aligned.
The 2021 SAG nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). Our odds currently have Close (37/10) favored to win the award, followed in order by Colman (39/10), Youn (39/10), Bakalova (4/1), and Zengel (9/2).
Close and Colman are the only previous SAG nominees. The two of them vied for the Best Actress award in 2019, with Close (“The Wife”) emerging victorious over Colman (“The Favourite”). Colman is a triple nominee this year, having also earned individual and ensemble bids for her work on the season 4 of the drama series “The Crown.” She shared in...

The 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards are poised to be unlike any ceremony in SAG Awards history. Rather than a lavish in-person live event that brings together the biggest stars in film and television together for one night of celebration, the 2021 SAG Awards will be pre-taped this week before airing an hour-long special on Sunday, April 4.
“We’re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,’” executive producer Todd Milliner previously told Variety.

Glenn Close (‘Hillbilly Elegy’) would be just 5th actress to win both lead and supporting SAG Awards
Glenn Close is beloved by her fellow actors, with “Hillbilly Elegy” producing her 10th career nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She won her first SAG Award for film two years ago for “The Wife” in the lead category. Now, she has the potential to join a very elite group of only four actresses who have won at SAG for lead and supporting roles in film should she take home the Best Female Supporting Actor prize for “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Renée Zellweger was the first to do it, winning lead for “Chicago” (2002) and supporting the very next year for “Cold Mountain.” She won a second lead award last year for “Judy.” Helen Mirren joined Zellweger soon after, winning supporting for “Gosford Park” (2001) and lead for “The Queen” (2006). Cate Blanchett was next, taking supporting for “The Aviator” (2004) and lead for “Blue Jasmine” (2013), followed by Viola Davis, winning lead for “The Help...

When composer James Newton Howard (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) first met with Paul Greengrass on the set of “News of the World” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the director already knew what kind of music he wanted: A broken score for a broken country. It was the perfect complement for the this post-Civil War western about healing and unification between news reader Captain Jefferson Kidd (Tom Hanks) and 10-year-old orphan Johanna (Helena Zengel), who endure a four-month journey together across the harsh, northern Texas plains.
“We talked about a broken consort — a central core collection of musicians playing in an ideal way more than literally,” said Howard, a nine-time Oscar nominee (seven for score). “But it was the idea of feeling uncertain, fragile, roughly hewn, and then surrounding that with orchestral music. And the way I tried to achieve that was by using more ancient instruments: cello d’amore and viola da gambas,...

First of all, I want to make something clear. I’m not predicting Glenn Close to win the Academy Award. As much as I want to see her finally recognized with the Oscar, I don’t know that this is her year. But I do believe that it will come someday – with the right role in the right film. However, I don’t think that Close should plan to sit back and relax after her recent losses at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. She should probably get at least one speech ready for this most unpredictable awards season. She’s going to need it. Here are five reasons why Glenn Close will win the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress in “Hillbilly Elegy.”
1. She’s Glenn Close.
There’s a lot of name-checking at play when SAG members fill out those ballots. And there are few names that...

Aaron Sorkin is widely considered the king of film and TV dialogue. Actors line up for a chance to feast on his words and the opportunity to deliver a Sorkin-penned speech. And yet his monologues never seem out of place; they fit organically into his stories and his characters. Sorkin says there’s a musicality to that.
“If you’re going to write a speech, you want the water to boil, you want to be able to get there,” Sorkin tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “It’s almost like in a musical. A musical number always works best when it’s the result of words no longer being able to do the trick.” Listen below!
Just this week, Sorkin landed his fourth Academy Award nomination for what may well be his magnum opus, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” It’s his second feature as a director, a timely...

The longest awards season ever got a boost this morning with the nominations for the 93rd Annual Academy Awards and the results were … not bad! For the most part, the Oscar voters chose films, performances, and craftspeople that were expected, but there were a few incredibly welcome surprises: Lakeith Stanfield for Judas and the Black Messiah! Paul Raci for Sound of Metal! Ramin Bahrani for the screenplay of The White Tiger! Of course, the Academy voters will never get it completely right — and there were more than a few headscratchers and disappointments this morning too,...

Our predictions for the 2021 Oscar nominations proved to be almost entirely accurate. Almost all of the actors that we tipped to hear their names called are indeed among those contending for the 93rd annual Academy Awards. But we feel bad that we encouraged some famous folk just outside the top fives to set their alarms early on Monday morning only for their hopes to be dashed as they became the latest Oscar snubs.
Four SAG Awards nominated performers aren’t in contention at the Oscars: lead Amy Adams (“Hillbilly Elegy”) and supporting players Chadwick Boseman (“Da 5 Bloods”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). Boseman did, however, reap a lead bid for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

After a completely crazy year, where the coronavirus forced most movie theaters to shut down — and the Oscars voting window was extended by two months — it was mostly business as usual at the 93rd annual Academy Awards nominations.
“Mank,” a black-and-white drama from Netflix about the making of “Citizen Kane,” led the pack with 10 nominations. After that, Oscar voters shared the wealth, as six films received six nominations: “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
For decades, the Oscars have failed to nominate worthy female directors in the best director category. But on Monday morning, history was made: two women directors — Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) — were nominated together in the category for the first time ever. Both films received best picture nods, the third time two female-helmed titles have been recognized in the top category.

The final Oscar nomination predictions are up if you're just joining us. But if you've already discussed those, here's another discussion prompt with two as the magical number. Looking through the Oscar probabilities we don't have many familial pairs in the acting category competition this time like siblings or father/sons or mother/child etcetera. What we do have is not one but three pairs of onscreen father & daughter teams, one only spiritually but it counts:
Anthony Hopkins & Olivia Colman - The Father Sacha Baron Cohen & Maria Bakalova - Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Tom Hanks & Helena Zengel - News of the World
How often are father/daughter onscreen teams nominated? Turns out quite rarely...

This may be jumping the gun, since Oscar nominations aren’t being announced until Monday and the show is still more than six weeks away, but I just don’t see how the Academy Awards are going to avoid the curse of pandemic-era awards shows.
We don’t know the details of what producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh are planning, except that it’ll involve multiple locations. And we don’t know what the climate will be like for large gatherings in Los Angeles County in late April, except that things seem to be getting better. We do know that almost every awards show before the Oscars has already committed to a virtual ceremony, with the Screen Actors Guild Awards taking the most drastic approach — and to my mind, the smartest: Instead of trying to do a virtual version of a regular awards show, they’re going...

Two cheers for movie billboards.
They are Big—as big as Gary Oldman’s second chin on the Mank sign at Wilshire Blvd. and Wellesley Ave. in West Los Angeles.
They are blustery. “Electrifying . . . A Dazzling Powerhouse Drama” boasts the promo for Judas And The Black Messiah, just down the street.
Okay, in keeping with the spirit of these Covid-weary times, they are also a little sad, like the pitiful look of Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel in News Of The World, gracing a bus stop along the Pacific Coast Highway. So they don’t get a third cheer.
But it’s a relief, finally, to see outdoor film advertising staging a late seasonal bloom in and around Los Angeles.
Those of us who have been walking away the pandemic—what else to do, with restaurants and theaters in lockdown for months?—are pretty weary of tent camps and plywood store fronts.

At 12 years old, Helena Zengel could become the youngest Screen Actors Guild Award winner in history for her supporting performance in “News of the World” opposite Tom Hanks. The youngster was noticed by director Paul Greengrass after her breakout performance in the 2019 German film “System Crasher” and was subsequently cast to play Johanna Leonberger in the Universal Pictures film.
Zengel will face off against Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Oliva Colman (“The Father’) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). Bakalova, Youn and Zengel are all celebrating their first nominations this year, while Close and Colman seek to add another statuette to their already decorated careers.

Yuh-Jung Youn is a history-maker with her Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination in Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” She is the first Korean actress to earn an individual acting nomination in SAG Awards history thanks to her standout turn as Soon-ja, the blunt grandmother of a Korean-American family living in 1980s Arkansas. The SAG bid comes after dozens of critics groups have lauded Youn with Best Supporting Actress wins. Could the legendary Korean actress translate that passion into a victory here?
Youn is not the only nominee in her category to earn SAG recognition for the first time. The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) has weighed in with picks for the best cinematography in film and television over the last year. Like other major guild ceremonies including the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild, the Asc nominees are looked at closely by Oscar pundits considering the overlap between guild members and the Academy. Over the last decade, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Cinematography has at least been nominated for the Asc prize for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases.
Last year’s ASC winner was Roger Deakins for “1917.” Deakins also won the ASC prize for “Blade Runner 2049.” In both cases, the legendary Dp went on to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography. No one has circled both the film and television awards races concurrently and with as much acclaim as Olivia Colman has in recent years. She earned her first Screen Actors Guild nomination two years ago in lead actress for “The Favourite” and then followed it up last year with three nominations and a win (in drama ensemble) for her work on television in “The Crown” and “Fleabag.” This year, she straddles both the small and large screen races with nominations in both fields, giving Colman an opportunity for her first film win for her supporting performance in “The Father.”
In the film, Colman plays Anne, daughter to Anthony Hopkins‘ stubborn Anthony who is struggling with the realization that he’s aging. The two engage in a mental tug-of-war as they cope with the changing circumstances of Anthony requiring full-time care and oversight. “The Father” is based on a play written...

Glenn Close is now in the double digits at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actress just scored her 10th nomination from her fellow actors for her supporting performance as Mamaw in “Hillbilly Elegy.” The last time she was nominated, Close won for her lead turn in “The Wife,” which helped support a potential Oscar win that didn’t ultimately pan out. After losing the Golden Globe for “Hillbilly Elegy,” a SAG win might be exactly the boost she needs to become a frontrunner for the Oscar again.
Close’s competition at the SAG Awards includes Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). These are the first SAG nominations for Bakalova, Youn and Zengel, while Colman has now collected seven nominations in just three years, with concurrent bids this year for “The Crown” both individually and as part of the ensemble.

Variety breaks down each category at the 27th annual SAG Awards ceremony, to be held on April 4.
Cast in a Motion Picture
There was a time when it seemed a film couldn’t win a best picture Oscar without a SAG ensemble nom, but in recent years, several films — such as “Green Book” and “The Shape of Water” — have done away with that theory. The five contenders have great casts and numbers in common, from “One Night in Miami” to “Da 5 Bloods” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Also nominated are “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” whose two leads are individually nommed, and “Minari,” which scored in the male lead and female supporting categories. It all feels too close to call at this point.

Maria Bakalova scored her first-ever Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her audacious performance as Tutar in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Bakalova is arguably the most acclaimed breakout star of 2020, which is all the more impressive because this role is not only her debut in an American studio film, but it is also her first comedic foray as the young Bulgarian actress had to date only worked in theater and on screen in primarily dramatic roles in Europe.
Filmed in secret, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” is actor-comedian and three-time SAG nominee Sacha Baron Cohen‘s follow-up to his 2006 smash hit mockumentary “Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.” Bakalova co-stars Borat’s 15-year-old daughter, who accompanies her father to the U.S. as he offers her up to former Vice President Mike Pence.
