For a story about a horrific subject like teenagers exploding for no reason, Spontaneous ends on a cautiously optimistic note. Although it never answers any pressing questions, the dark comedy guides its heroine Mara (Katherine Langford) away from a terrifying situation that few of her friends escaped from. Based on the book of the same name by Aaron Starmer, Spontaneous's movie follows highschool seniors Mara and Dylan (Charlie Plummer). As their young love begins to blossom, a terrifying occurrence begins to take place: members of the senior class begin to spontaneously combust with absolutely no explanation at all.
Mara and Dylan have to fight to make it out of Spontaneous' ending alive in a situation that is completely out of their control. Despite the fact that Spontaneous's teenage characters are exploding around them, Dylan and Mara manage to fall in love. Tragically, near Spontaneous's ending, Dylan combusts right before Mara's eyes.

Brian Duffield is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working in Hollywood today. His screenplay for the Western "Jane Got a Gun" was a gem that got tarnished by behind-the-scenes chaos. He bounced back with the clever horror romp "The Babysitter," and enjoyed a breakout 2020 with his scripts for "Love and Monsters" and "Underwater," and, most importantly, his directorial debut "Spontaneous." Duffield's adaptation of Aaron Starmer's darkly satiric novel about teenage romance in the age of school shootings hit the bullseye; it was hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, and, for a movie about kids inexplicably exploding, didn't skimp on the gore. At all. The film went hard because it had to.
Duffield's latest, "No One Will Save You," plays just as rough. The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as a young woman who lives by herself in a roomy rural house, which, one dark night, is broken into...

For those who watched Dan Trachtenberg‘s amazing Predator prequel Prey on Hulu last summer, you are in for another terrific sci-fi film.
Hulu is streaming No One Will Save You on Sept. 22, 2023, in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
An Invasion Is Imminent, according to Brian Duffield, who wrote and directed 20th Century Studios’ “No One Will Save You,” a sci-fi psychological thriller told through the eyes of a lonely young woman with a painful backstory. “I wanted the movie to take the lead of a small intimate character study and drop an alien invasion on top of them,” says Duffield. “The end of the world won’t only be for those that are ready for it, and the idea of an alien movie rudely bursting the bubble our character has spent years building and cultivating felt like a unique way to tell a favorite story.

The screenwriter behind the films "Jane Got a Gun," "Love and Monsters," "Underwater," and "The Babysitter," Brian Duffield made something truly magical with his explosive 2020 directorial feature debut, "Spontaneous." Adapted from Aaron Starmer's book of the same name, "Spontaneous" is a coming-of-age romantic black comedy horror film about a girl named Mara Carlyle (Katherine Langford) whose friends and classmates begin spontaneously combusting. Knowing that any moment could be her last, Mara begins living life as she sees fit, which includes starting a romance with the adorable Dylan (Charlie Plummer of "The Clovehitch Killer" and "Words on Bathroom Walls"). As their romance grows, Mara and...

Photo: 'Spontaneous'/Paramount Pictures Unbearable workload. Pressure from your parents to excel. The constant fear of embarrassment. Being torn between wanting to belong in a peer group and being an individual. Having rumors spread about you. Not knowing if the people who act nice to your face say nasty things behind your back. Making and/or losing a friend. Not being noticed by your crush. Let’s face it: high school can be some of the worst years of a person’s life. And then they blow up. Not metaphorically or emotionally, but literally. Boom, drenching anyone within the blast radius in blood. That’s the world that the main characters in Spontaneous, written and directed by screenwriter Brian Duffield in his directing debut and based on the YA novel by Aaron Starmer, find themselves in. And yet against this horror-worthy backdrop, we have a darkly funny yet genuinely sweet...

High school is hard enough, but for the characters in Paramount’s Spontaneous, it’s about to get a whole lot messier. Based on the explosively funny novel by Aaron Starmer, writer/director Brian Duffield‘s coming-of-age comedy of horrors sees a particularly strange epidemic spread through a high school. These teens, well, they’re quite literally exploding at random. “When students […]...

For his directorial debut, Brian Duffield takes on senior year in high school with Spontaneous, his genre-bending teen comedy that follows a group of students who might spontaneously combust at any moment, with Katherine Langford’s character Mara at the center of it all (you can read my review Here).
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to chat with Duffield about Spontaneous, and how Aaron Starmer’s novel of the same name initially hooked him years prior. Duffield also discussed the challenges of nailing the film’s complex tonal shifts throughout, collaborating with Langford on the project and more.
Spontaneous is currently playing select theaters and is also available to rent digitally as well, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.
Between Underwater and Spontaneous being out this year, and then there’s Love and Monsters coming up too, all things considered, you are having a pretty okay year. So congrats on everything,...

As far as teen-centric dark comedies go, Spontaneous is easily one of the best I’ve seen in years. Based on Aaron Starmer’s novel of the same name, this adaptation of Spontaneous from Brian Duffield perfectly captures the high school experience—particularly senior year, when students are filled with so much hope, but also are contending with a great deal of uncertainty about what the future holds as they are being thrust into adulthood—and delivers up an experience that’s wildly unpredictable and exciting, but also horrifying and heartbreaking all the same.
In Spontaneous, we are introduced to Maya Carlyle (Katherine Langford), a smart and confident high school senior whose world is rocked when, during class, one of her fellow students inexplicably explodes. From there, more of Maya’s peers end up combusting out of nowhere, causing a great deal of panic in the school and the community.

Everyone knows that one’s teenage years are fraught with peril. Beside the typical problems of peer pressure, burgeoning sexuality, academic performance and body image, today’s youth have to deal with the ever-present dangers of school shootings and the coronavirus epidemic. And, in Brian Duffield’s new comic horror film, a mass wave of spontaneous combustion.
Such is the audacious conceit of Spontaneous, based on Aaron Starmer’s 2016 YA novel. The film is both a coming-of-age tale and love story, complicated by the fact that its charming main protagonists, superbly played by Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer, are faced ...

We have a brand new trailer for Spontaneous, which may be one of the more interesting ones to come our way in a long time. The latest from Paramount Pictures stars Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer in what can only be described as a teen comedy with a totally bonkers premise. Described as "the most outrageous coming-of-age love story about growing up...and blowing up," it literally has teenagers, well, blowing up. And not just as a little gag. It seems the whole plot centers on this very specific device of young people dying suddenly, and not to mention violently.
The trailer kicks off with a few teenagers hanging out, talking vaguely filthy and leading seemingly normal lives. But the footage doesn't take long before getting to the meat on these bones as an unfortunate high school kid explodes, leaving a bloody mess behind. Fear then grips the students, as...

Awesomeness Films has released a trailer for its bloody teen movie Spontaneous, which stars Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) and Charlie Plummer (Looking for Alaska). Brian Duffield wrote, directed and produced this adaptation of Aaron Starmer's Ya novel, which stars Langford and Plummer as a couple of high school students whose classmates begin to spontaneously combust, as in, explode, leaving bits of blood, brain and bone all over the place. I know high school can be hard for most people, but this movie takes things to a whole new level. [caption id="attachment_923897" align="alignright" width="360"] Image via …...
