Showrunner Alexi Hawley ended up revealing that Tru‘s exit was due to the creative direction on the show.

When asked if Tru would ever be welcome back on the show, Alexi told Screen Rant, “Of course. Tru is a great actor, and he was a huge part of our show for several seasons, and so we’d love to have him back in some capacity.”

He then touched on why Tru was gone, saying, “It just ultimately felt like, creatively, for where the show was going, that we needed to pivot a bit.

For those who forgot, Season 6 of The Rookie ended with the cops exposing how corrupt lawyer Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) had used shrink Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) to get information on cops she could sell to criminals. That exposed scores of detectives to blackmail that hampered investigations.

Nolan worked with the FBI to track Monica down with a big firefight that had him shot in the hindquarters while Monica escaped. However, in the middle of the chaos, recurring criminal “frenemy” Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) escaped prison alongside Jason (Steve Kazee), the abusive drug-dealing ex-husband of Nolan’s wife, Bailey.

As Season 7 opened, the crew tried to track Jason and Oscar, but a drug house bust couldn’t turn them up.

The Rookie is back. The beloved police drama kicked off season 7 in style, courtesy of a thrilling case and the chemistry of the main cast. Unfortunately, the main cast was a member short. Aron Thorsen, the police officer who made his debut in season 4, was nowhere to be found.

The character, played by Tru Valentino, has been written off the show. The actor confirmed that he would not be returning in a full-time capacity in August 2024, and the season 7 premiere confirmed it. It was sad to forge ahead without a character who had become so beloved during his tenure, but the good news is that the door is not permanently shut.

A new spinoff of “The Rookie” is in the works at ABC, Variety has confirmed.

The untitled project hails from “The Rookie” creator Alexi Hawley. Per the official description, the show is set in Washington state and “follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.”

The project is co-produced by Liongate Television and 20th Television. Lionsgate acquired the show upon the completion of their acquisition of eOne in late 2023, while ABC Signature had been the other studio on the show before it was absorbed into 20th TV as part of a restructuring at Disney. Hawley will write and serve as executive producer with “The Rookie” star Nathan Fillion also executive producing alongside Michelle Chapman, and Bill Norcross.

This comes after Valentino was a series regular, playing Officer Aaron Thorsen, for two seasons; he recurred his first season, the show’s fourth (its second episode was his debut). Thorsen started out as the rookie cop who was well-known at the time for being acquitted of murder. Augustine will play Miles, who is described as “one of the newest rookies at the LAPD.
