“It feels like the TV bubble has burst,” Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh said today.
The French powerhouse has been making TV for around six years and Marsh used a Mip TV keynote to say things feel like they are slowing down, following a boom period.
“We were experiencing greenlights after very short development periods beforehand but now it feels like these decisions are stretching out,” she added. “Some shows aren’t getting over the hump and it’s not as easy as in the past to get a second or third season. It feels like the TV bubble has burst.”
There are great challenges today and “upheaval” but Marsh stressed that Studiocanal remains committed to TV.
In film, she said Studiocanal, which she claimed was 2022’s leading indie theatrical distributor, is at a “crossroads” following the “dark and dim” Covid-19 period. Her team is receiving around 500 movie and 200 TV scripts per year,...

“Paddington” producer-distributor Studiocanal is gearing up to shoot “How To Stop Time,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and with D.C. Moore (“Mary & George”) and Tomas Alfredson (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) on board as key creative talent.
Production on the title by Studiocanal and SunnyMarch will be announced by CEO Anna Marsh on Monday at her keynote at Cannes’ MipTV trade fair.
In it, she also looks set to confirm that Studiocanal has acquired an equity stake in London-based Strong Film & Television, co-founded in late 2020 by “Broadchurch” director James Strong and Matt Tombs, a former executive at the BBC and Paramount.
Both moves come as Studiocanal parent, Vivendi’s Canal+ Group, is ramping up its own international ambitions, operating throughout Africa, in six territories in Eastern Europe and two in Asia with 16 million of its 25.5 million subscribers now outside France. It also holds a leading 30.3% stake in Africa’s MultiChoice Group, the biggest...

Damian Lewis, whose credits include Billions, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Homeland, and Dreamcatcher, has signed on to play two roles in the supernatural black comedy The Radleys, which is set to be directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Based on a novel by Matt Haig (pick up a copy Here), The Radleys has the following synopsis:
The Radleys are an ordinary family, or at least that’s what the neighbours think, no one would suspect that behind all of this, the Radleys hold a dark secret…they are vampires. Only parents Helen and Peter (Lewis) know about the family’s true nature. They are ‘abstainers’, vampires who choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings. Their teenagers, vegan Clara and lovesick Rowan, have no idea, until one evening Clara is attacked by a boy in her class and her bloodthirsty instincts take over, forcing her parents to finally reveal the truth.

If you’re immune to the charms of a small child admitting that he’s heartbroken over the loss of his mother but “still loves her with all the broken pieces,” then suffice to say that “A Boy Called Christmas” probably isn’t for you. For those who don’t mind a bit of saccharinity in their holiday viewing, however, Netflix’s tall tale about the origins of Christmas will make for better background viewing than a yule-log loop. Directed by Gil Kenan (“City of Ember”) and based on Matt Haig’s novel of the same name, “Christmas” is a cut above the usual holiday dross.
Said cherub, along with his two older siblings, is in the care of his great aunt (Maggie Smith) for the evening, their father having been called into the office on Christmas Eve. After insisting that “the universe is made of stories, not atoms,” the...

Adventure, elves and home truths mingle in this big-hearted movie based on a Matt Haig children’s book
You’d need to have the humbuggiest of hearts not to be charmed, even just a little bit, by this family Christmas movie – lavishly adapted, no expense spared, from a kids’ novel by Matt Haig. It begins in modern-day London, with Maggie Smith as the Mary Poppins-ish great-aunt to a trio of siblings. Their mum has recently died, so no one is feeling festive when Aunt Ruth begins telling them a bedtime story on Christmas Eve.
Her fairytale is a Santa Claus origins myth, about a boy called Nikolas (played by delightfully urchin-faced newcomer Henry Lawfull). He lives in a forest in Finland with his poor woodcutter dad (Michiel Huisman). They are so poor that when the dotty king (played by Jim Broadbent with endearing spoiled-child petulance) offers a reward to anyone...

Sky plans to broadcast one new film a week from 2022.
UK pay-tv broadcaster Sky is to launch 30 new Sky Original films this year and will increase this to one a week from 2022 in a bid to become “the best home cinema service in the world”.
It represents a major push into film for the UK pay-tv operator, taking on streaming giants Netflix and Amazon as well as Disney, whose channels were removed from Sky last October following the launch of Disney+.

To cap off a particularly hellacious year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gifted us the first episode of their Archewell Audio podcast on Dec. 29. Throughout the episode, which was a 2020 holiday special, we heard from the likes of Stacey Abrams, Christina Adane, José Andrés, Brené Brown, Rachel Cargle, Deepak Chopra, James Corden, Matt Haig, Elton John, Hussain Manawer, Naomi Osaka, Tyler Perry, and George the Poet. While the episode's quotes about 2020 were at times both uplifting and reflective, the true highlight came at the end when Harry and Meghan shared a sweet moment with their 1-year-old son, Archie. "Archie, is it fun?" Meghan asked before Harry had him repeat "Happy New Year" with a giggle. Listening to the three of them laughing, along with Archie's slightly English accent, is a sound we'll keep coming back to when we need a pick-me-up.

Meghan Markle’s deeply personal op-ed about her experience suffering a miscarriage in July was published Wednesday in the New York Times, and the reactions across the internet have been polarizing.
The loudest voices are those expressing support, awe, and gratitude to the Duchess of Sussex for sharing a deeply personal story on such a little-talked-about subject — all while knowing that she would undoubtedly receive more of the online harassment and bullying that she has suffered ever since she joined the royal family.
Among her champions was Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose affair with President Bill Clinton thrust her into the national spotlight and made her tabloid fodder for years to come.

The company has optioned the book, which was published in 2014 by Corgi, will be developed as a hybrid of live action and animation.
Submarine co-founder Femke Wolting told Deadline that it is talking to a few writers before taking the project out to pitch.

Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to “The Giver of Stars,” a new novel from “Me Before You” author Jojo Moyes, with Ol Parker attached to direct the film adaptation.
Parker will also adapt the novel, which Penguin Random House will publish in October. “The Giver of Stars” is the latest story from Moyes, whose books have sold 40 million copies across the globe. Set in Depression-era Kentucky and rooted in true events, it tells the story of a group of extraordinary young women who defy the odds to bring knowledge — and power — to a remote mountain community.
“Saving Mr. Banks” producer Alison Owen and “Cats” producer Debra Hayward will produce for their Monumental Pictures. Moyes will executive produce. Owen and Moyes previously collaborated on the film adaptation of Moyes’ bestselling novel “Me Before You,” which starred Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin and grossed more than $200 million worldwide.
