The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022, then the second season reached the airwaves this past October. Unfortunately, there won’t be a season 3, as Variety reports that the show has been cancelled for the most common reason a show gets cancelled: it “did not find a large enough audience to continue.” But Starz is going further than just cancelling this show, as they’re also going to be scrubbing it from their archives. “Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the Starz streaming service at the end of the year.“
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps,...

Starz has canceled its horror-comedy Shining Vale after two seasons.
The series, starring Courteney Cox as a woman who begins seeing and communicating with ghosts, finished its second (and now final season) on Dec. 1. In addition to canceling the show, Starz will also remove Shining Vale from its streaming library at the end of the month.
Jeff Astrof, who co-created Shining Vale with Sharon Horgan, shared news of the show’s end on social media Wednesday. “This show gave me unrelenting joy to work on. Not a single bad day. Please watch the Starz (turns out, Limited) series Shining Vale before 12/31,” he wrote.
Shining Vale earned generally positive reviews for its first season, which premiered in March 2022. It earned a renewal in May of that year, with season two premiering in October 2023. It was less successful in drawing viewers; sources say that was ultimately behind the decision to both cancel...

Starz has canceled Shining Vale after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed. Sources close to production revealed that the Courteney Cox- and Greg Kinnear-led series “did not find a large enough audience” to continue.
Both seasons also are set to be removed from the streamer’s library.
Sources said producer Warner. Bros. TV tried to sell the series elsewhere but did not succeed.
Season 1 of the series from creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan followed Pat (Cox) and Terry Phelps (Kinnear), a married couple who cash in their life savings and move from a cramped Brooklyn apartment to an old Victorian mansion in Connecticut, as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage after Pat’s torrid affair with the handyman. Their kids Gaynor and Jake are pissed, and as disconnected as teenagers can get. Pat is losing her grip on them, and Terry doesn’t see that Pat might...

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.
Variety reports, “The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on December 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.”
“Shining Vale” Season 2 premiered on the Starz streaming service on October 13, 2023, and Variety notes that the show didn’t find enough of an audience to justify a third season.
The bigger issue here, however, is the news that both seasons of “Shining Vale” will be removed from the Starz streaming service. The series has to date not received a single physical media release, so this could be another case of a streaming project being...

Courteney Cox’s Pat Phelps got out of a mental institution during the “Shining Vale” Season 2 premiere, but she’s clearly not out of the woods following her nervous breakdown (or demonic possession?) in Season 1.

The violence led to her children Gaynor (Gus Birney) and Jake (Dylan Gage) having her committed at the local asylum for a year.
But the premiere kicked off with a disheveled Pat being asked to leave treatment after only four months, once funds from her medical insurance ran out. Though she attempts to stay focused on her sanity,...

The entire cast is back for these eight new episodes, which were filmed before the writers’ and actors’ strikes. The season premiere, titled “Homecoming,” is written by showrunner Jeff Astrof and directed by Liz Friedlander (all episodes are directed by women). Watch the video trailer above.

“‘Shining Vale’ is both wickedly funny and a beautiful three-dimensional portrayal of marriage, adolescent parenting and motherhood,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. “We’re thrilled to bring viewers another season of this mic dropping blend of horror and comedy.”
In Season 1, Pat (Cox) and Terry Phelps (Kinnear) cash in their life savings and move from a cramped Brooklyn apartment to an old Victorian mansion in Connecticut, as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage after Pat’s torrid affair with the handyman. Gaynor (Birney) and Jake (Gage) are pissed, and as disconnected as teenagers can get. Terry tries to rally the family, but the pushback is relentless.

When “Shining Vale” creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan first met they knew they had a delicate job on their hands. The series, following a novelist played by Courteney Cox, who is haunted by the ghost of a 1950s housewife (Mira Sorvino), had to strike the right tone between horror and comedy. What they knew they wanted to do was directly reference some of the classic horror and noir movies that inspired them. “The tone was being able to do references and homage without making it a spoof,” Astrof told IndieWire via Zoom.
Initially pitched by Horgan to Astrof as “‘The Shining’ but a comedy,” the creators and crew reveled in inserting references to their favorite horror features. So much so that the series almost requires repeat viewings to find everything. Something as minor as the wallpaper that papers the interior closet where Cox’s Pat Phelps finds a hidden...

Demons of the literal and figurative variety plague Courteney Cox’s Pat during Shining Vale‘s two-episode premiere — but strangely, it’s the metaphorical ones that appear to be wreaking more havoc.
Shining Vale, which debuted on Starz Sunday night, centers on the vaguely dysfunctional Phelps family: There’s Pat, a depressed author who’s still trying to write a follow-up to her popular erotic fiction novel from 17 years ago; her husband, Terry (Greg Kinnear), who isn’t quite over the affair that Pat recently had with their handyman; and their two kids, rebellious teen daughter Gaynor (Dickinson‘s Gus Birney...

It’s been more than 17 years since “Friends,” the series for which Courteney Cox is best known, aired its season finale. And, fair or not, it is a fact that for actors whose signature roles are as iconic as Cox’s portrayal of Monica Geller, those roles will continue, perhaps forever, to remain those actors’ signature roles. Viewers will always be inclined to compare the present and the future to the past.
So, let’s get this out of the way: Cox, as Pat Phelps, a one-time party girl and the bestselling author of a book about her wild-child days, is not playing an organization- and cleanliness-obsessed chef on Starz’s new series “Shining Vale.” In fact, Pat neither cleans nor cooks for her family. And the rest of her life is a mess; her family has fled its Brooklyn apartment for a big, Gothic, maybe-haunted mansion in Connecticut, all...

The highly anticipated horror-comedy series Shining Vale premieres this weekend.
It truly comes out of the gate running with thrills and chills throughout.
We got the chance to chat with Gus Birney (Gaynor) and Dylan Gage (Jake) about the show.
Check out the full interview below.
Starting with you, Gus, how would you describe Gaynor?
Gus: Gaynor is an edgy, rebellious, 16-year-old who's kind of at that age where her parents are driving her crazy, and she wants nothing to do with them.
But they move to this new town, and I think she's reevaluating herself and her decisions and kind of wants to turn over a new leaf and be a new person.
That doesn't necessarily go so well for her. She might not pick the right avenues, does she?
Gus: No, not at all.
Do you know why her name is Gaynor? It's an unusual name, and I...

The blunt opening title card of “Shining Vale” feels like a test: “Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression,” it reads, seeming to signal the beginning of a clunky show about Women and Depression — at least until the next sentence appears onscreen. “Women are also twice as likely to be possessed by a demon,” it says, a immediate and deliberate wink of self-awareness at an audience that might’ve already tried to write the show off. What’s more, it adds: “the symptoms are the same.”
Throughout the first seven episodes made available for critics (the season will have eight in total), “Shining Vale” follows a Brooklyn family coming to grips with the inherent strangeness of their new Connecticut home to increasingly catastrophic ends. It also ends up juggling so many tricky narrative plates — depression, generational trauma, the slow and steady awakening of a haunted house...

Courteney Cox has a new reason to scream! In the sly horror-comedy, Shining Vale, the actress stars as author Pat Phelps, who’s struggling to finish the follow-up to her first trashy bestseller while also making amends for cheating on her husband (Greg Kinnear). The troubled couple tries to start a new chapter by moving their oddball kids and dog Roxie from Brooklyn to a clearly creepy house in Connecticut — where Pat comes face-to-face with a spectral muse (Mira Sorvino), who seems to haunt only her. Is it clinical depression or actual possession? Both share similar symptoms and Pat is the lone witness to these supernatural events. She’s also being aggressively medicated by a truly terrible couple’s therapist. Whatever it is, it’s working for Pat’s editor, Kam (the fabulous Merrin Dungey), who is just happy to finally be getting some content from her friend. At the same time,...
