Aparna Rajeev is a playback singer in Malayalam cinema and also a Ghazal artist. Aparna Rajeev, the granddaughter of poet-lyricist ONV Kurup, has been active in the music field for several years. At the age of 7, she began receiving formal training in Carnatic music from Smt. Omanakutty teacher and subsequently under Shri. Alappuzha Sreekumar. She had got the training Hindustani vocal under Shri Fayas Khan, Pandit Ramesh Narayan, and in 2018 under the guidance of Smt Abhadrutha Banerjee.
Since she was 6, Aparna Rajeev has been an active participant in school youth festivals and various other cultural competitions. She was the finalist in the first music reality competition by Asianet named 'Voice of the week'.
On the basis of this and other achievements, Aparna was selected to anchor the trendsetting TV programs: 'Ma Ga Ri Sa' -- a music quiz show by children for children and 'Gandharva Sangeetham' along with the famous playback singer Shri G. Venugopal. In 2018 Aparna is being trained in the nuances of Carnatic classical vocalization under noted Carnatic singer Shri. Varkala Jayaram and Smt. Binni Krishnakumar.
Aparna was born on February 8, 1986, in Kochi, to Rajeev and Devika. She attended Carmel Convent and Holy Angels Convent in Thiruvananthapuram for her primary and secondary education, followed by a degree from Mar Ivanios College and a postgraduate degree in management from the Asian School of Business. Her father, Rajeev, is a music composer and a former Indian Railways officer, while her mother, Devika, is a banker. Siddharth Premkumar, a journalist, is her husband. They have two children together. Aparna is the granddaughter of O.N.V Kurup, the late Malayalam poet.
Aparna Rajeev made her debut as a playback singer in 2005, under the baton of Shri. Vidyasagar, in the movie 'Made in USA'. She has since sung in a number of films for many composers, including such legends as V.Dakshinamoorthy, Devarajan Master, M.K. Arjunan Master, M.G.Radhakrishnan, Ouseppachan, Bijibal, Rahul Raj, and many others. She has also sung in a Hindi short film ' Purani ye dhun' under the music direction of legendary musician and Grammy award winner Shri Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Her song 'Manjutharasree', composed by veteran composer Shri. Dakshinamoorthy Swamy for the movie 'Mizhikal Sakshi', fetched her the Film Critics award for best playback singer in 2009, the World Malayalee council award, and a Kala Kerala award. She was also a nominee for the best female playback singer (south) at the 2009 Filmfare awards. In 2016, Aparna won the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy award for a best female singer in the professional drama category. Her life-long fascination with ghazals has also prompted her to explore the realms of pure music and extempore singing. She had the great privilege to present a ghazal in honor of Ghazal maestro Shri. Ghulam Ali Saab in 2016 at a function in Trivandrum. She has also been performing at a number of ghazal concerts in and around the country, including the prestigious Soorya Festival for the past two years.
