"I am the person I am today because of the people that help me... and the people that hurt me." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for a film titled Lola, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Nicola Peltz Beckham (formerly known just Nicola Peltz - most will recognize her from her role in Transformers: Age of Extinction or on "Bates Motel"). Not to be confused with the other indie sci-fi film titled Lola from last year, this is an entirely different one. Peltz Beckham also stars as the titular Lola James. Lola works to save enough money to get her little brother, Arlo, out of their toxic home. Arlo keeps her hopeful, until one tragic night, when her whole world gets uprooted. From that moment on, nothing will ever be the same. The cast includes Virginia Madsen, Trevor Long, Luke David Blumm, Raven Goodwin, Sunil Narkar, Stephen Graybill,...

Many movies choose to feature a casino as part of their story and there are plenty of reasons as to why they are included. The most obvious reason for a casino to feature in modern film is because it is a great setting for an interesting plot to take place. If the film is based in or on a casino, a gambler, or a casino game, it is clear one is going to be included in the movie. The topic could be about professional gambling or someone who runs a casino, in which case, the bulk of the movie is going to feature a casino.

Hard-edged, old-fashioned, and anchored by a sturdy movie star performance from Adrien Brody, Clean plays well as a socially-tinged vigilante thriller. Directed by Paul Solet (from a script he co-wrote with Brody), the film moves fast and rises above certain genre tropes. Brody plays Clean, a garbage man seeped in the sins of his past. In the opening minutes, he goes about his day: driving his early morning route before retiring to his industrial dwelling wherein he retrieves abandoned machines from a junkyard and brings them back to life. The resurrected results he sells to local pawnbroker Kurtis.
Frequent, brief flashbacks hint at the violence that Clean is attempting to escape. Young actress Chandler Ari DuPont plays Dianda, a neighborhood girl whom Clean feels compelled to protect. In her is he reminded of his late daughter. When the wayward son (Richie Merritt) of a violent local gangster (Glenn Fleshler) is...

"You know, we don't need anyone to save us..." "Just trying to save myself." IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for Clean, a thriller from filmmaker Paul Solet. This was originally supposed to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival last year, it's now being released in January from IFC. A garbage collector, tormented by his past, is sucked into the orbit of a local crime boss and must face the violence of his past to find redemption in this bloody thrill ride. Tribeca describes it as "a brooding and sullen snapshot of failed redemption" and "a hyper-violent meditation on the power of the past and the struggle for salvation." Clean is produced by and stars Adrien Brody as the "Trash Man", with a cast featuring Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt, Chandler Ari DuPont, Mykelti Williamson, RZA, Michelle Wilson, and John Bianco. It looks like a much grittier, darker John Wick...

If a story about a reformed killer returning to his murderous ways to hunt down and slaughter Russian mobsters sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the synopsis for “John Wick.” It’s also, however, the premise of “Clean,” director Paul Solet’s thriller — co-written by leading man Adrien Brody — about a hit man getting back in homicidal business. Obvious and derivative in borderline-shameless fashion, it’s That’ll make it a tough sell following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere (delayed from last year), although genre fans hungry for hackneyed action with a healthy dose of “Taxi Driver”-ish brooding may welcome its by-the-numbers mayhem.
In a dark, wintery New York City, Clean (Brody) performs his garbageman duties in the early morning, musing in interior monologues about the “sea of filth. An endless onslaught of ugliness … Where does it all go? I’ve got blood on my hands. I’m stained.

One of the sublime performances in Studio 8/Sony’s White Boy Rick belongs to British actress Bel Powley, who portrays Dawn Wershe, the sister of Detroit teen-turned-drug-dealer/government informant Rick Wershe Jr.
Yet while Rick initially lifts the family out of its financial problems before getting arrested, Dawn spirals, becoming a crack addict; in many ways collateral damage of Rick Jr.’s fortune, even though he’s not dealing to her.
“She’s gets worse and worse throughout the film, that by the end, she’s living in a full-on crack house. We actually shot in a real crack house,” says Powley, who was guided by director Yann Demange on the nuances of her performance.
How did Powley get into character? “I actually watched a lot of YouTube videos of people smoking crack,” said the actress, to great laughs at Deadline’s The Contenders London.

Matthew McConaughey's latest film, White Boy Rick, is inspired by the heartbreaking story of a man who was dubbed a "cocaine kingpin" when he was still a teenager. The new movie stars McConaughey as Rick's father, Richard Wershe Sr., while newcomer Richie Merritt takes on the role of Richard Wershe Jr. - better known to the public as White Boy Rick. Viewers who head out to the theater should expect a gritty ride through the '80s-era Detroit's drug scene, but the real-life Wershe Jr.'s life is even more tragic than what's depicted onscreen. This is one time that fact is far more heartbreaking than fiction.

20th Century Fox’s “The Predator” will take the top spot on the box office charts from “The Nun” this weekend with an estimated $26 million opening from 4,037 screens, but will need help from overseas markets to stay out of the red.
Shane Black’s addition to the ’80s monster franchise looks like it will have an opening slightly higher than the $24.7 million the last installment, “Predators,” made in 2010. But “The Predator” is a far more expensive film, with an $88 million budget compared to $40 million for its predecessor. The larger budget is mainly due to the increased CGI in the film, as well as the salaries of stars like Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown and Keegan-Michael Key.

“The Predator” has found its next feast: its box office competitors.
The Fox release is invading North American multiplexes with an estimated $25 million opening weekend at 4,307 sites, early estimates showed Friday.
The alien franchise film is coming in at the lower end of expectations, which had ranged from $25 million to $32 million. “The Predator” should be able to top the second weekend of Warner Bros.’ supernatural horror hit “The Nun,” which is projected to finish at about $20 million for a 63% decline.
Lionsgate’s opening of mystery-comedy “A Simple Favor” is heading for a sold third place with $18 million at 3,102 sites, coming in well above forecasts in the $12 million to $15 million range. Sony-Studio 8 crime drama “White Boy Rick” is also projected to top recent forecasts at about $10 million from 2,500 screens, battling for fourth place with the fifth frame of rom-com hit “Crazy Rich Asians” and the second weekend of Jennifer Garner’s thriller “Peppermint.

“‘How about you talk to him?'” Merritt remembers his principal saying to the White Boy Rick casting team.
“But it was his first time getting into trouble,” says Matthew McConaughey winking to the camera at Deadline’s Tiff studio.
Pin it to Merritt’s authenticity and similarity in background to Wershe as the reasons why Studio 8 and Sony rolled the dice on the untested Merritt. From the onset in auditions, it was clear to director Yann Demange that the teenager became the anchor which McConaughey could pivot around in scenes.

Fox’s “The Predator” earned $2.5 million at the Thursday box office, while Paul Feig’s noir thriller “A Simple Favor” grossed $900,000.
Produced for $88 million, Shane Black’s film is expected to earn in the high $20 million range. “The Predator” stars Boyd Holdbrook, Sterling K. Brown, Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Trevante Rhodes and Keegan-Michael Key. It currently holds a score of 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Predator” starts with a boy (Tremblay) who accidentally turns on an alien signal that he thinks is a toy. The signal triggers the return of the titular alien race, which has become even stronger thanks to DNA fusion with other races it has hunted.

Fox’s “The Predator” invaded the Thursday night box office with $2.5 million.
“A Simple Favor,” starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, reeled in $900,000 from Thursday night previews in North America. “White Boy Rick,” meanwhile, grossed $575,000 in previews.
“The Predator” has been pegged to top the domestic box office with $25 million to $32 million in its opening weekend at 4,037 sites. Its preview number fell short of “Alien: Covenant,” which made $4.2 million on Thursday night on its way to a $36 million launch last year.
The sophomore frame of “The Nun,” which has grossed $64 million in its first six days, may challenge the new installment of the “Predator” franchise for first place. Lionsgate’s mystery thriller “A Simple Favor” will likely open between $12 million and $15 million at 3,102 venues. Sony and Studio 8’s crime drama “White Boy Rick” is projected to make between $6 million and $10 million from 2,500 screens, battling for fourth place with the...

White Boy Rick tells the true story of Richard Wershe Jr., a teen in 1980s Detroit also known as White Boy Rick, recruited by the FBI as the youngest informant ever at 15-years-old. The trailer makes this film look like some wild adventure in the vein of Blow but White Boy Rick is a sad and frightening tale, as well as a portrait of economic decline of a working class inner city neighborhood, now gripped by drugs and violence. It is also a story about a boy buffeted by the bad choices of adults, and the terrible environment in which he lives.

On the heels of The Nun's strong start to the fall season, this weekend sees the release of Fox's The Predator, which should top the weekend box office, though a cloud of controversy may stall what might have been a larger performance. Also releasing this weekend is the Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick thriller A Simple Favor, Studio 8's White Boy Rick and Pure Flix's Unbroken: Path to Redemption, all poised for a spot in the top ten. Debuting in over 4,000 locations, Fox's The Predator isn't having the best of time leading up to release. The controversy swirling around the film has been all anyone is talking about and reviews are, at best, lackluster. The film is currently looking as if it will fall short of Alien: Covenant's disappointing $36.1 million opening last May with studio expectations for the $88 million production in the high 20s, perhaps reaching $30 million for the weekend.

True crime stories usually like to focus on the rise and fall of someone we know in our hearts is due justice. We may like him or her, but there’s never a doubt that prison is deserved. With the new film White Boy Rick, opening in theaters this weekend, things are different. Watching a teenager be set up and then go down is not what you normally get. And yet, that’s the story being depicted here. It isn’t always particularly easy to watch, but the heft of the tale is never lost on you. Especially in the final scenes, the cost stays with you. The movie is a biographical drama/crime story, though one more focused on characters. This is the official synopsis on IMDb for the film: “The story of teenager Richard Wershe Jr., who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and...

It's a story of a teenager with a complex relationship with the FBI: an informant and expert but also a criminal himself. No, this isn't the Leonardo DiCaprio caper Catch Me If You Can - it's the upcoming crime drama White Boy Rick. Based on a true story, the film follows Richard Wershe Jr., a teenager in 1980s Detroit who became the FBI's youngest informant ever at the age of 14. But when the FBI no longer needed him to help with drug cases, he turned into the very thing he worked against: a high-level drug dealer.
According to the team behind the movie, they auditioned tons of potential leading men, from experienced actors to total newcomers, and settled on one of the latter: Richie Merritt.

By 14, Rick Wershe Jr. (Richie Merritt) could tell a real Russian Kalashnikov assault rifle from an Ak-47 knock-off, courtesy of his firearms-hustling dad, Richie Sr. (Matthew McConaughey). At that age, he also hung with the African-American gangs who ran the drug trade in Detroit in 1984, earning a reputation and a nickname. By 15, he’d been recruited by two feds (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane) and a local narcotics cop (Brian Tyree Henry, now officially costarring in every fourth movie being released this year) to do “buys” for them, so they...

A demonic nun and a race of extraterrestrial hunters will go head-to-head at the box office this weekend as 20th Century Fox’s “The Predator” will take on “The Nun” in its second weekend, with analysts expecting “The Predator” to take the top spot, albeit with rather lackluster numbers.
Releasing this weekend on over 4,000 screens, “The Predator” is expected to earn an opening weekend in the high $20 million range, with the top end of independent projections standing at $30 million. By comparison, last year’s “Alien: Covenant” opened to $36.1 million in May and went on to gross just $74.2 million domestically and $240 million worldwide against a $97 million budget.
While “The Predator” would hold the highest opening weekend for the 31-year-old franchise, it’s also by far the most expensive in the series with a reported production budget of $88 million. The original 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was produced on a $15 million budget — around...

The life of crime in movies is often portrayed as a family business (The Godfather) or a surrogate family (Goodfellas). White Boy Rick takes a unique perspective of a family that turns to crime to try to save their family. Ricky Wershe, Sr. (Matthew McConaughey) and his son Ricky Jr. (Richie Merritt) sell guns to the gangs in Detroit in 1984. When they get caught, the FBI pressures Ricky Jr. to inform for them to keep his father out of prison. It’s a pretty timely portrayal of how black market guns flooded the street. We see the results of the […]

A familiar group of monsters are returning to invade multiplexes this weekend.
Fox’s “The Predator,” the fourth installment in the sci-fi series, looks to top a trio of fellow new offerings — “A Simple Favor,” “White Boy Rick,” and “Unbroken: Path to Redemption” — at the domestic box office. The No. 1 spot, however, could be a close call depending on the staying power of Warner Bros.’ “The Nun,” which led North America last weekend with its sizable debut. Another factor that could impact the weekend box office is Hurricane Florence, the category four storm that is targeting the east coast, specifically the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland. It’s too soon to tell the potential damage, though storm surges and heavy winds could close theaters.
Estimates show Shane Black’s “The Predator” could earn between $25 million and $32 million when it launches in more than 3,900 venues. A debut over $25 million would rank as...

There are times when you watch a newcomer in a role and know, just know, that they’ll go on to tackle great, eclectic challenges; with “Call Me By Your Name” still in moviegoers’ rearview mirrors, Timothee Chalamet, for example, is already proving himself an enormous, versatile talent. But other times, such as with Richie Merritt, the star of “White Boy Rick,” you’re no less transfixed, but you wonder: Is this young actor simply perfect in this one role? Or can he countenance others with that beautifully, ordinarily dull expression? While there isn’t a single moment in his performance that doesn’t feel utterly believable, it also seems singularly engineered for this character and this one alone.

The pitch is as follows: Ricky Wershe Jr. (newcomer Richie Merritt) was a street hustler, drug kingpin, and FBI informant by the age of seventeen. If that doesn’t hook you, the added bonus of it all being real should. Welcome to White Boy Rick, a look at the American Dream that cuts through the bullshit to show what the term truly means outside of false promises. Ricky isn’t some hotshot who worked through the ranks and got too close to the sun. The order of those labels in the trailer isn’t even correct, a difference with dire consequences. He was simply the kid of a shady gun reseller (Matthew McConaughey’s Rick Sr.) whose best friend (Rj Cyler’s Boo) had family in the game. He was a product of his circumstances with a mind, ambition, and heart to break free.

If you didn’t know that the story of “White Boy Rick” was true, you might still be fascinated by this gritty, fast-paced look at a city’s descent into the drug wars of the 1980s through the experience of one unlucky kid, a prelude to the tragic state of Detroit today.

As the Toronto Intl. Film Festival welcomes indie fare aimed at adults and awards voters, but the producers of those films aren’t just competing with each other. Many stars and quality mid-level-budget features are being siphoned off by Netflix in the production stage, not to mention by the siren song of the limited series deal. So how are theatrical films attracting financing? “The financial market is pretty strong right now, and that tends to make it an easier time, particularly for the individual investors who love film,” says Maven Pictures partner Celine Rattray, echoing the comments of several producers with top Toronto titles (Maven’s got “Skin” at the fest). Others note an influx of financiers like 30West, well-backed mini-majors like Annapurna and numerous adult dramas and docs that have passed the $10 million mark at this year’s box office, even as companies such as Global Road Entertainment hit troubled waters.

Everybody in “White Boy Rick” seems to be running some kind of scam. The title character (newcomer Richie Merritt), né Richard Wershe Jr., and his huckster dad have some kind of borderline-illegal gun business going. His sister’s a teenage drug addict dating a shady dude who offers her a ticket out of their sad Detroit home. Then there are the cops, who are recruiting suckers to go undercover, making the rules up as they go along. Every other speaking character — including Rick’s own grandparents (an opportunity for the inspired casting of Bruce Dern as McConaughey’s dad) — is a drug dealer or in some way associated with the crack epidemic.

Fox’s “The Predator” should dominate the domestic box office with $25 million to $30 million in its opening weekend on Sept. 14-16, early tracking showed on Thursday.
The tracking services also showed that Lionsgate’s mystery thriller “A Simple Favor” will likely open between $12 million and $15 million that weekend, while Studio 8’s crime drama “White Boy Rick” has been pegged to launch between $5 million and $9 million with Sony handling the release. The newcomers will likely see strong competition from the second weekend of Warner Bros.’ horror entry “The Nun,” which is currently heading for a debut in the $32 million to $40 million range on Sept. 7-9.
Shane Black’s new installment of the “Predator” franchise follows the titular aliens, who return to Earth, now deadlier than ever before after taking the DNA of other species. Jacob Tremblay’s character accidentally triggers an alert that brings the Predators back to Earth.
