Devised as John Travolta’s awards contender, ‘Gotti’ opened in 11th place this weekend, while Pixar broke records with 'Incredibles 2' grossing $182.7 million.
Though ‘Gotti’ had a tiny budget of $10 million, its $1.7 million opening is among the lowest in Travolta’s 40-year film career, which has broken $1 billion. All things equal, the film was only offered in 503 U.S. theaters while most wide releases can reach up to 4,000 theaters.
Of that $1.7 million, nearly 40% of ‘Gotti’s’ domestic gross came from MoviePass subscribers, who purchased tickets through the $9.95-monthly service. On Monday, MoviePass announced they had hit 3 million subscribers, which means that ‘Gotti’ could have potentially grossed over $25 million had all MoviePass subscribers seen the film.
Critics weren’t kind to the project they described as an exoneration of the real-life mobster murderer, who was often called Teflon Don in the media.
But Travolta was drawn to that dichotomy of a folk hero in the headlines and villain in the streets. When IMDb Special Correspondent Dave Karger caught up with Travolta and director Kevin Connolly at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the pair explained how it was the actor’s passion that willed ‘Gotti’ into being.
The Cannes screening was not in Competition at the festival, but was part of the film’s streamlined advertising campaign that relied on Travolta’s celebrity to get the word out. The strength of Travolta’s name attracted venerable character actors Stacy Keach and Pruitt Taylor Vince to the project, as well as Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston, who plays Mrs. Gotti.
Despite an aggregate score of 0% from critics, IMDb users are split on their feelings. Some point out that Travolta’s solid performance was lost in a boring, ‘Goodfellas’ ripoff. The film currently rates an average of 4.9 from close to 900 reviews.
‘Gotti’ may not be a masterpiece, but it’s got us talking! To hear more about the film, you can watch our interviews with Travolta, or add the film to your Watchlist.
