It should not be a surprise when J.K. Simmons receives a Golden Globe nomination this Thursday morning for starring in Starz’s “Counterpart.” Although he ranks seventh in Gold Derby’s odds, Simmons has several factors in his favor that assure him more for a Best TV Drama Actor nomination than anyone. He is a big name giving a showy performance in a new series with good reviews on a network that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves.
Simmons won his Best Film Supporting Actor Globe four years ago for “Whiplash” on his path to collecting the equivalent Oscar. Simmons has boosted his profile in the years since with roles in franchise blockbusters “Justice League” and “Terminator Genisys,” as well as “La La Land,” whose clean sweep of seven Globe wins broke the record for most by a film. Simmons is currently eligible in the Best Film Supporting Actor race for “The Front Runner.
