Meet the Btl Experts: Cinematographers discuss misconceptions about their jobs, influences, and what they wish they’d known before they got started [Exclusive Video Interview]

“I think they just think we operate the camera,” divulges “Native Son” cinematographer Matthew Libatique when asked to cite the biggest misconception about his job. “The whole lighting aspect doesn’t really come into play and, when you explain that part to them, it still goes right over their heads.”

Libatique was one of three lensmen interviewed at Gold Derby’s recent Meet the Btl Experts panel in Los Angeles, which was moderated by managing editor Chris Beachum. The group also touched upon the films that inspired them to become cinematographers, with “Will & Grace” Dp Baum citing Billy Wilder‘s “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) as an influence.
