Emmys Experts warn that ‘Documentary Now’ could upset ‘SNL’ for Best Variety Sketch Series

Saturday Night Live” is the heavy favorite to win Best Variety Sketch Series for the third year in a row this year after dominating the Emmys in 2017 and 2018, but the venerable NBC series hasn’t always been so indomitable. It lost the top prize to “Inside Amy Schumer” in 2015 and “Key and Peele” in 2016. And now, according to a couple of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, it could lose to IFC’s “Documentary Now.”

A win for “Documentary Now” would kind of be a win for “SNL” too considering that it was created by “SNL” alums Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers and is also executive produced by “SNL” mastermind Lorne Michaels. It’s a mockumentary series that parodies classic nonfiction films like “Grey Gardens,” “The Thin Blue Line,” “The War Room” and “Wild Wild Country,” among many others, with special guest stars taking part in the absurd recreations.
