I was a little bit late to the Smiths party, without knowledge of what alternative music was until a handful of years later when a small Am radio station outside of Vancouver began broadcasting at the end of the 80s. By then the band had broken up and their legacy was in its infancy. I don't know how I would have reacted to the breakup of The Smiths but I don't think I would have gone as far as to take over a radio station by gunpoint and demand they play nothing but Smiths tracks.
