In honor of the recent box office success of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’—the fourth film in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence action franchise—we’re looking at a data visualization created as part of IMDb's partnership with Tableau. The partnership gives Tableau users access to a large subset of movie data from IMDb. Tableau user Vincent Ng’s “When Data Meets Action" reviews action films from the past 30 years to look at the number of action movies made per year, their average IMDb ratings, and even their average run time.

Comparing ‘Ride or Die’ with Ng’s analysis, the fourth film in the Bad Boys franchise clocks in at 115 minutes, making it 11.5 minutes longer than the average action films’ 103.5. In terms of ratings, the action genre scores pretty low on average at 5.7 on the IMDb ratings scale. ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ mostly pleased IMDb users, with a rating of 7.0. Maybe it was those additional 11.5 minutes that made the difference.
