Sony Pictures has boarded “Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger’s new adaptation of the “Resident Evil” video game franchise after a bidding war for the director’s take on the property. The studio will release the film, titled “Resident Evil,” on Sept. 18, 2026.

Cregger wrote and will direct the new movie, based on the video game franchise about a world overrun by zombies due to a viral outbreak from an evil corporation. Shay Hatten is co-writing. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

After an acting career, Cregger burst onto the scene as a filmmaker with his 2022 horror film “Barbarian,” which was released by 20th Century Studios and earned glowing reviews.
