Oscars 2019 Postmortem — 'Roma' vs. 'Green Book'

Did Green Book (2018), Oscar-nominated in five categories score an upset Best Picture victory over Roma (2018), Oscar-nominated in ten categories at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony? It has been suggested that a minority bloc of voters who take issue with streaming films being considered for Oscars engineered the upset. The Oscars preferential voting system likely was an unwitting accomplice, by reassigning votes from other Best Picture nominees until a clear majority winner emerges. As such, sentiment against a film can factor, as much as, having the most top-ranked votes on the initial ballot. An unbiased head-to-head voting competition would settle the issue once and for all. If the 2019 Oscar Best Picture race were rerun, this time as a pure head-to-head competition, which of these two nominees would get your vote for Best Picture? Seminal Films for Baby Boomers

If you happen to have been born between 1946 and 1964 or thereabouts (and if not, you'll just have to pretend :-) ), then you should recall many if not all of these films. Which title do you recall most fondly? Which film perhaps even influenced you in some way in a time when social values, political views, music taste, sexual prejudices, drug use, race relations, respect for state authority, women's rights and so many other entrenched views were being questioned without quite knowing what this would lead to. Limiting the list: To keep this list faintly manageable, it ranges from the early sixties which saw the first boomers in their teens (so no Rebel Without a Cause (1955) or West Side Story (1961)), to the mid seventies before subject matter turned to mid-life crisis (Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), The Big Chill (1983), Field of Dreams (1989)) and post Vietnam coping (Apocalypse Now (1979), Coming Home (1978), The Deer Hunter (1978)). Movie Images to Put You in Autumn Mood

Autumn isn't a season we generally embrace as enthusiastically as spring or summer (even winter whose beginning announces Christmas and New Year's Eve parties). And for all its melancholic aspect, there's something emotionally riveting in that unique palette of gold, beige and sepia tones, in the fragile, beautiful foliage and the unpredictable, capricious weather. Indeed, autumn can be a time for reflection and introspection, a time of lucidity and nostalgia, perhaps the most appropriate time for life-changing experiences. So, celebrating the First Days of Autumn, here are a series of images representing in a way or another the season without evoking school, Halloween or Thanksgiving (not visually anyway).
