The original word I was going to use was 'unhappy' but then I realized that it doesn't necessary take a pessimistic or dark ending to break your heart. Still, this is not a list of movies that end happily but those who never fail to make your eyes water before the ending credits start. Totally depressing, brutally shocking or emotionnally involving, with a thin or inexistent light of hope, which of these movies has, in your opinion, the saddest ending? Discuss here

The thrill of many romances is to see how hard the two protagonists must work to earn their love, but there are particular cases where we see them working as hard to keep it. In the former case, the finality of the film (granted it's a happy ending) is that the two will spend their life together, which generally means marriage but in the latter case, marriage isn't the end but rather the starting point of the thrills (aka troubles) or at least the mid-point. This is a melancholy time for all the friends of Friends (1994) as the sad passing of Matthew Perry shook a community of fans that transcend generations and language barriers. The show ended almost 20 years ago but its legacy is intact, its influence undeniable and its sense of comedic timing hardly equaled. Which title do you recall most fondly? Which film perhaps even influenced you in some way in a time when social values, political views, music taste, sexual prejudices, drug use, race relations, respect for state authority, women's rights and so many other entrenched views were being questioned without quite knowing what this would lead to.
