Movies That Feel Like Experiences

Experience. Like a key to a new vision of the world or a window to *a* world; whether fictional realms with a unique imagery or poetic realities with an absorbing mood, whether leading to contemplative amazement or driving a captivating story, some movies take the viewers to new dimensions but new dimensions of perceptions, evoking visions, thoughts and feelings rather than tying them to a plot. So, which movie, that fits the description, is the most unforgettable experience? (one per director) After voting, you might discuss the list here

One-Location Movies

The one-location movie is a producer’s best friend and a director’s worst enemy. On the budgetary side of business, it’s a dream come true: a single set, a small stable of characters, no cordoning off a public area for shooting. But there are also manifold creative challenges — there’s nothing to rely on but good ol’ fashioned acting, writing, and camerawork. Flash and style can only get a filmmaker so far when they’ve got nothing to work with but four walls, a handful of performers, and words. Movies With Two Characters or Less

Which of these movies with two main characters or less is your favorite? Discuss the list here!

They're at Your Service (in the Movies)

January is "Be Kind to Servers Month." Waitresses and servers don't have it easy in the movies. The work is hard, they're often treated poorly and are rarely the star of the show. They may have a heart of gold or could just be a face in the shadows, the rest of the characters probably couldn't care less. Which of these movie servers would make you tip over 20%? Discuss the list here

"Hardcore Henry", "Boyhood" and Other 'Gimmick' Movies

Maybe a proper term of designation would be 'concept' or experimentalist movies but this is not meant in a derogatory way, by 'gimmick', I mean one original device that made the film more 'unique' to a certain degree and was used to promote the film. The concept can be defined in one simple sentence and must affect the storytelling process more than the story itself. Now, following the release of Hardcore Henry (2015), which of these gimmicks is the most impressive in your opinion? Discuss here

Pride Week: Most LGBT-Proud Film

To celebrate Pride Week, which, depending on the country and city, is held in June or the first week of July, which of the films below do you think best embodies the spirit of LGBT Pride? After voting, discuss here. To view or vote in Part 2 of this poll, go here. To vote in other Pride polls, go here. If you're interested in a bit of background: As the 1995 documentary, The Celluloid Closet, illustrates, for a long time in cinema, most LGBT characters were portrayed to evoke laughter, pity, or fear. Movies like those, whether in early cinema or later (as in Basic Instinct), are obviously not represented in this poll. Relatively early on, there were screenwriters, such as Gore Vidal (Ben-Hur) and Stewart Stern (Rebel Without a Cause), who did write in positive messages but they had to be so subtle, or be left on the editing room floor, that the films, although they should be appreciated for widening the lens, don't really qualify as proud. Cinema evolved as society did and more realistic and diverse LGBT characters appeared on screen. All of these films don't necessarily have perfect messages but are noteworthy in some way; which of them do you think best captures the spirit of LGBT Pride?

Movies Told in Real Time

Everyone loves a broken narrative but sometimes it's those movies told in real time that really hold our attention. For these films, events are portrayed at the same rate at which the characters experience them and thus make us feel like we're right in there with them! This means shorter runtimes that are perfect to squeeze in for that late night watch. Which of these films told in real time did you enjoy the most? (Please note: While not 100% of the movie may be shot in real time (barring perhaps an intro or ending), the majority is.) After voting, you may discuss the poll here.

Gems That Seem to Be Forgotten

These movies don't have many votes and they never have been listed in the IMDb Top 250. Nor did they receive any Oscar or Golden Globe nominations. But what these movies do have are good IMDb ratings and Metascores. So these gems of movies seem to be forgotten and they remain unnoticed. Which movie deserves more attention or which one would you like to see? You may discuss the poll here

Movies with a Minimal Cast

Some movies center on a tight drama involving a very minimal amount of characters (three, two, or even just one). They forego large casts, and that small core pretty much have all the speaking and acting parts. Some of these movies might have larger casts than just that core, but they are either "extras" in one small scene, or voice-only (offscreen). The overwhelming majority of the time and narrative of these films depicts only that minimal core interacting. These films are usually intense character studies, shown in a very small-group (or pair, or singular) dynamic. Which one of these films of that style makes use of it in a way you like best? Discuss here
