The prestige of the comic book genre has progressively grown over the last century, in part due to a series of Oscar watershed moments. In 1942, the animated short 'Superman' became the first comic book adaptation to earn an Oscar nomination. In 1991, 'Dick Tracy' grabbed the first comic book above the line nomination and set a new high for Oscar nominations. Dark Knight's total nomination record and a shocking Oscar Best Picture snub in 2009 shattered perceptions of the genre. In 2018, 'Black Panther' secured the first Best Picture Oscar nomination for a comic adaptation and marked a major milestone in Black cinema. In 2020, 'Joker' led all other movies in total nominations and set another genre high with its eleven total Oscar nominations. Successively, each of these Oscar-nominated comic book adaptations elevated the stature of the comic book genre to where it stands today.
