Not Scary Ghost Stories - Which Is Your Favorite?

Instead of a list of scary ghost stories for Halloween, how about a list of ghost stories that were never meant to scare? Or may have some scary moments in them but that the main object of the film was not meant to be scary? Maybe just play around with the ghost and spirits theme a bit. Here is a list of films that were mostly comedies, some romantic, mystery, and even a musical. And true, most of them are in black and white, and are comedies but that goes to show that this concept existed before Beetlejuice (1988) and Ghostbusters (1984) and done with comedians like Bob Hope, ‘Abbott and Costello’, ‘Martian and Lewis’, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, and even Cary Grant who could get more laugh per minute than Micheal Keaton with special effects. Which one is your favorite? If you got any to suggest for this list, investigate this haunted mansion. (Most of the films have that or a castle. Just plain suburban haunted houses, hospitals, and insane asylums are in the minority here.)

Dec. 19, 2018, Happy 175th Birthday Mr. Scrooge, Mr Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and Everybody Else!

On December 19, 1843, Charles Dickens published the first edition of his short story entitled "A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas." This enduring classic, better known as "A Christmas Carol,” has seen many adaptations for stage, film and television since. It celebrated its 175th anniversary on December 19, 2018. "A Christmas Carol” remains relevant to today despite much of the story being anachronistic. The Poor Law at that time financed the poorhouse, the Treadmill, and debtor prisons by taxing businesses. The taxes that Scrooge paid to finance these establishments have been repealed and faded into the past. In 1843, Christmas was not an official holiday in England, but a half day of business unless it fell on a Sunday, according to Royal Exchange rules. Hence the reason for Scrooge saying to Cratchit the statement about expecting the “All day tomorrow” off. Dickens was an avid advocate for stronger copyright laws in England and internationally. He vehemently disliked people adapting and modifying the plot of his book; he did not receive royalties from these pirated adaptations, which frequently added characters and made significantly changes to the story. Of these film and television adaptations, which do you believe Dickens would most approve? Discuss your opinions, as Dickens did write in the final chapter of the book, “... Over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop ...”!

Old Rare or Forgotten Christmas Films: Which Is The One You Would Like To See?

These are old rare or forgotten Christmas films, over 25 years, with low IMDb vote totals (sometimes under 1,000) but have decent ratings (over 6.0). You are not expected to know these films. But judging from their plot summaries, which is the one that interests you to find it and watch? Warning: One film is a potboiler that is set at Christmas but not generally considered a very Christmassy film. If you have any to suggest that you think others might be interested in viewing but might not know and you want to suggest it, suggest it here. No horror films! I personally learn of new old films every year. P.S. None of these summaries were written by me but by other IMDb users instead. But I did add a few notes.

The Bookkeepers of Death

In some movies, the karma of souls is balanced by a bookkeeper of morals. In most of them the bookkeeper is shown as some kind of devil; in others he even might be friendly. He is there to help the soul(s) decide which way to take and where to go at least. Sometimes he "helps" when they are still alive, but - anyway - his mission's end is most of the times inevitable for the delinquent's hereafter. Which of these movies containing a bookkeeper of death is your favorite? Tell us here. (This list may contain spoilers because of the poll's subject.)
