Midnight Movies After the Heyday
The heyday of the midnight movies phenomena was from 1970 to 1977. For more information see the poll: Midnight Movie Phenomena. From 1977 many leading midnight movie venues switched back to their original programming of live acts and present mainstream movies. The Elgin Theatre in New York City, where the midnight movie movement began, shut down completely in 1978. In succeeding years many independent theaters ceased to exist because of the popularization of the VCR and cable television. During the late 1970s and early 1980s concert films became popular midnight screenings. New films, now from mainstream distributors, were picked up by the midnight movie circuit, but the core of exhibitors that energized the movement had disappeared. In 1988 the Toronto International Film Festival introduced the nightly Midnight Madness section. In the years since, new or recent films still occasionally emerge as midnight movie "hits" on the circuit of theaters that continue to show them. Entertainment Weekly's Top 50 Cult Movies
The term 'cult movie' was first used in the 1970s to describe the culture that surrounded underground films and midnight movies. These movies have aquired cult followings for their camp value (an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value). Other cult movies were controversial and suppressed at their release, but they are reclaimed or rediscovered. (Source: Wikipedia) In May 2003, magazine Entertainment Weekly published a list of the top 50 Cult Movies of All Time. Which cult movie is your favorite? Or, which one seems the most fascinating? Paste Magazine’s Best B Movies of All Time
A B movie is a low-budget commercial movie. In its original usage the term identified films intended for distribution as the less-publicized bottom half of a double feature (akin to B-sides for recorded music). The production of these second features ceased by the end of the 1950s. To this day the term B movie continues to be used in its broader sense. Nowadays they represent a particular genre. The primary interest is prurient and many B movies display a high degree of craft and aesthetic ingenuity. Ground-Breaking Comic Heroes Before the 1950s
Far before the 1950s, the first comic strips about heroes were published and many readers were delighted. A new phenomenal kind of story-telling was about to gain a huge fanbase. The artful paintings of the creators helped to understand the powers and qualities of the unusual and extraordinary characters by literally depicting them. It arose to a magic form of art that seduced masses of young and later even old readers - and from today's point of view also the audiences in cinemas. Today the artwork of the comics is transported to movies by CGI-effects, which enable to show the full virtual power of those comics that seduced so many, in reality-like movies. We take a look at the oldest characters, which set a big stone in motion. Which of these comic heroes of the 1940s and earlier do you think had the biggest impact on the whole genre or is the most interesting for you?
