    Toni Morrison

    "Sula"

This would be a refreshing movie if made. It is a character driven story that takes place in a small town in Ohio, circa 1919-1965. It follows the life of a young African-American girl and the changes that happen to her and her community as almost a half century marches on by.

    Clive Barker

    "The Great and Secret Show"

Part 1 of the "Books of the Art" or "The Art Trilogy", which is an incomplete trilogy of novels by Barker. Only two have been published. The novels are long and are of the "Horror/Fantasy" genre. There may be three novels eventually, but this would make an excellent 5 or 6 movie series. The first novel spans 2 decades alone. While being a very dark story, it would be a fresh break from the endless Super Hero Sequels being turned out in Hollywood.

    Michael Chabon

"The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay"

A film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book was optioned, but it never came to fruition. Given that it’s Chabon’s crowning achievement, one can hope.

This is a detective story, set at the time of the 9/11 attacks, in New York City, and how it would shape the newly emerging Internet.

    José Saramago

    "Death With Interruptions"

A thought-provoking meditation on life, loss, and the limbo between those two mortal inevitabiliesis the premise of this story. This novel is said to be unfilmable. One can only hope that is not true.

    Umberto Eco

    "Foucault's Pendulum"

This has been described as, The Da Vinci Code, that's less ridiculous and a whole lot smarter.

    Haruki Murakami

    "Kafka on the Shore''

One would need a vision of the world in the abstract to turn this into motion picture. Tarantino maybe? If Stanley Kubrick was still with us! David Lynch?

    Octavia Butler

    "Kindred"

The time travels of an African-American novelist between the 20th Century and Civil War America. I'm ready for that!

    Ursula K. Le Guin

    "The Left Hand of Darkness"

Will leave the description of this blank. But suffice it to say that this, if made into a movie would be controversial. And Wondrous!

    J.D. Salinger

    "The Catcher in the Rye"

We spend two days with 16-year-old Holden Caulfield after he has been expelled from prep school. Disillusioned, Holden searches for truth and rails against the “phoniness” of the adult world. This may be the perfect time for this novel to make it to the big screen

    Ray Bradbury

    "The Martian Chronicles"

Follows the colonization of Mars by humans fleeing from a ecologically devastated Earth. 50 Years after colonization, subterranean life is discovered, and conflict erupts. What will be the outcome? (A little embellishment was added to the synopsis)

    Neal Stephenson

    "Snow Crash"

"The Mafia" has muscled in on pizza delivery along with their old staple, the drug trade! Hiro, our main character is a a sword wielding computer hacker and "Mafia Pizza Delivery" guy. One day he meets Y.T., who is a skateboard delivery courier, while on a failed "On time" Mafia Pizza delivery. Khaos ensues. Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

    "Cat's Cradle"

Scientists are working against the clock to find a deadly chemical hidden somewhere on earth. Just think of 'The Rock' with Nicolas Cage as Agent Goodspeed on the loose all over the World instead of a small island prison.

    Haruki Murakami

    "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle"

Second entry in this poll by this author. Suffice it to say that a lot of this movie takes place in a surreal dream state, by an out of work legal assistant who became bored with his job and quit. So he now takes care of the domestic duties, such as cooking meals and caring for a lone cat and his wife, all the while daydreaming a great adventure that he has supplanted himself into. This period piece is from the time of Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria during World War II.
