Best Spike Lee Joint

Call him controversial, biased or divisive, now Oscar-winner Spike Lee has never stopped to be relevant ever since he set the template of his groundbreaking art with She's Gotta Have It (1986). He wasn't always political and made many heart-warming drama/comedies but his main work explored with a critical eye and an uncompromising spirit the social, political and interracial climate in the United States during the last fifty years: the 60s with Malcolm X (1992), the 70's with BlacKkKlansman (2018), the 80'/90s with his masterpiece Do the Right Thing (1989) and the post-September era with 25th Hour (2002). Still, for all their activism or personal stances, his "joints", as he always called them, were never devoid of humor, tenderness, a camera wizardry, editing energy and musical sensibility that elevated them to unforgettable cinematic experiences as well as -to use that key word again- relevant. In homage to his first Oscar win, name your favorite Spike Lee's joint? After voting, you might discuss the list here. That's it? that's it! Got it? Got it. Now go!

Best B&W Films of the 80s

From the 70s onward, with the vast majority of films being shot in color, it has become an artistic and/or stylistic choice to present a film in black and white. More often today it is used to pay homage to films of a bygone era and invoke a sense of nostalgia, but it can also be used to help create a stark, emotionless, unforgiving world onscreen. Which of these films made most effective use of its black and white presentation? Discuss here.

It's not exactly the Bechdel test, but even the most arbitrary parameter can sometimes provide interesting insights. Let's call it the "Four-Billing" test for the sake of giving it a name. The following films have two things in common: they were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar and out of the 4 first credited cast-members, at least 3 are female (or 3 out of 5 given that the fifth one was nominated for an Oscar). 33 Best Picture nominees seem to pass the "Four-Billing" test for women, 8 of them were released in the past 10 years.
