Viola Davis made history when she became the first black actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Accepting the award for her performance in How to Get Away with Murder, she thanked other women of color, including fellow nominees Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, and Halle Berry: “Thank you for taking us over that line,” Davis said. -

Winning two major awards, the groundbreaking series Transparent did much to bring attention to and celebrate transgender individuals. Jill Solloway, after winning for Best Directing for a Comedy Series, told of the rights still being denied transgendered persons and publicized TransEquality.org. Jeffrey Tambor, as he accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, dedicating his award to the transgender community, saying: “Thank you for your patience, thank you for your courage, thank you for your story, thank you for your inspiration, thank you for letting us be part of this change.”
