Best "Big Five" Oscar Nominated Movie
Which "Big Five" Oscar-nominated movie is the best of all time? The "Big Five" Oscars award categories are those for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, either Original or Adapted. In the past 90 years, only three films, It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) have won all five Oscars from the forty-three films that secured nominations in all five prestige Academy Award categories. But, maybe sweeping the top five Oscar categories is overrated. Maybe, being nominated across a broader scope of Oscar categories, as well as, being nominated in those same big five prestige Oscar categories is a better indicator of a movie's true greatness. Complete Oscars "Big Five" Nominated Movie List Which of these select* Oscars "Big Five" nominated movies is the best movie? * minimum 25k IMDb votes Discuss the topic here.
Seminal Films for Baby Boomers
If you happen to have been born between 1946 and 1964 or thereabouts (and if not, you'll just have to pretend :-) ), then you should recall many if not all of these films. Which title do you recall most fondly? Which film perhaps even influenced you in some way in a time when social values, political views, music taste, sexual prejudices, drug use, race relations, respect for state authority, women's rights and so many other entrenched views were being questioned without quite knowing what this would lead to. Limiting the list: To keep this list faintly manageable, it ranges from the early sixties which saw the first boomers in their teens (so no Rebel Without a Cause (1955) or West Side Story (1961)), to the mid seventies before subject matter turned to mid-life crisis (Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), The Big Chill (1983), Field of Dreams (1989)) and post Vietnam coping (Apocalypse Now (1979), Coming Home (1978), The Deer Hunter (1978)). They Called Him Mister Poitier.
Sidney Poitier, the actor whom Morgan Freeman referred to as his "own heaven", just passed away... and it's a terrible loss for Cinema. He was one of the first African-American actors to be given truly substantial leading roles, to win an Oscar for one of them, to play characters who were beyond all the archetypes related to his ethnic background. Still, there was more in Poitier's characters, it wasn't just the experience of a Black man confronted to prejudices, but also a man of integrity, who carried his heritage with pride but always willing to prove that it takes more than a pigmentation to define him. Now, every movie lover is aware of the trailblazing symbol that Mr. Poitier incarnated and his sad passing is an opportunity to salute the record of all African-American or minority actresses and actors in Hollywood, for which he was the ultimate inspiration... as well as the epitome of class, charisma and gentleness. One can't ignore the legacy of Poitier, one of the last of AFI's Legends, and through this poll, let's celebrate ten of his most famous movie roles. Which one is your personal favorite? After voting, you might discuss the list here
AFI's Marital Passions
The thrill of many romances is to see how hard the two protagonists must work to earn their love, but there are particular cases where we see them working as hard to keep it. In the former case, the finality of the film (granted it's a happy ending) is that the two will spend their life together, which generally means marriage but in the latter case, marriage isn't the end but rather the starting point of the thrills (aka troubles) or at least the mid-point. The following movies have two things in common: they were all listed in the AFI's Top 100 Greatest American Romances and they feature a married couple for the most part of the film, if not the totality. Which of these AFI's marital romances is your personal favorite? After voting, you might discuss the list here
