Midnight Movie Phenomena

The screening of nonmainstream pictures at midnight was aimed at building a cult film audience, encouraging repeat viewing and social interaction in what was originally a countercultural setting. The movie generally recognized as igniting the theatrical midnight film movement is El Topo (1970), which opened in December 1970 at the Elgin Theatre in New York City. From 1974 the midnight screening phenomenon was spreading around the country. Midnight screenings of the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) became a national sensation in 1976, amassing a cult following all over the United States. Where the social aspect had always been a part of the midnight movie's attraction, with Rocky Horror in an exaggerated way it became the attraction. Broad social and economic shifts weakened the countercultural base and leading midnight movie venues were beginning to fold as 1977. (Source: Wikipedia) If you could go back to the '70s and experience one of these midnight movie screenings, which movie would you choose? Favourite Whacky Character

Some of the characters in these films are just unconventional or eccentric, others are stark raving mad. Which of them is your personal favourite? I had to list them by the films they feature in, because some of them have no character page or the character appears in several (sometimes very different) versions in multiple films. If there is more than one character from the same film, the film appears twice in the list, with different charactors (actors playing them) listed beside the film title. Face-Off: 'Magnolia' vs. 'The Graduate' vs. 'Harold & Maude'

Which of these movies, each inspired by one specific musical artist, do you think combined music and film the most successfully? Several films have been created from classic albums, like Pink Floyd’s The Wall or The Who’s rock-opera Tommy.  There are also albums that are basically musical versions of film scripts, such as Prince’s Purple Rain or Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly. Musical artists, however, are rarely commissioned to provide an entire soundtrack’s worth of original material for a movie in which they shared no part in filming or writing — essentially creating a score of new songs that carry their weight independent of the film, as well. A small, elite group of pop artists can claim such a distinction: Simon and Garfunkel composed music for 'The Graduate', Cat Stevens did 'Harold and Maude', and Aimee Mann's music provided the soundtrack, and some of the inspiration, for 'Magnolia'. A few others are out there but these three are widely considered the best in film, music, and the synthesis of the two. Discuss (and hear sample songs) here.

Entertainment Weekly's Top 50 Cult Movies

The term 'cult movie' was first used in the 1970s to describe the culture that surrounded underground films and midnight movies. These movies have aquired cult followings for their camp value (an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value). Other cult movies were controversial and suppressed at their release, but they are reclaimed or rediscovered. (Source: Wikipedia) In May 2003, magazine Entertainment Weekly published a list of the top 50 Cult Movies of All Time. Which cult movie is your favorite? Or, which one seems the most fascinating?
