Breaking the Fourth Wall

Imagine you’re sitting in a theater. There are three walls that surround the stage: on the left, on the right, and in the back. Between the audience and the stage exists this imaginary fourth wall, which separates the real world from the fictional world of the stage. So when a film breaks the fourth wall, that means the line has been crossed, there is no longer a boundary between what is real and what is fiction. The spectator is now taken out of the film world - they are purposely being made aware that they are watching a movie. What are some of the ways that a filmmaker breaks the fourth wall? The most common device is when a character turns to the camera and directly addresses the spectator. A film can also be meta, which means it is referencing itself. For example, a film within a film about filmmaking is another way to break the fourth wall. Which of the following movies that break the fourth wall did you like the most? Classic Film-Noir Villains

Which of these classic film-noir villains is your favorite? Discuss here (to stay on the "noir" mood, no color or neo-Noir movies included)

Which of these films or television shows that feature a non-traditional, alternative housing is your favorite? Sorry, since land has very little to do with these homes, real estate agencies can’t list their lots here, but it seems that dealers in mobile housing and marinas can..

Classics With Zero Accolades

All these movies are classics that, throughout the years, gained in popularity and cinematic stature. Today, on IMDb, they're rated at least 7.5 with more than 10.000 votes. Yet, at the time of their release, even a delayed time, these movies were strangely overlooked by the Oscars or any other festival or critics' circle or journalists' association. In other words, these movies were nominated for nothing. For which of these classics, do you find the absence of nominations the most surprising, if not unbelievable? After voting, you might discuss the list here (of course, these movies became so popular they were later selected to National Film Registry and were nominated for some DVD-related awards, needless to say that these nominations don't count)
